(A)
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with one proper word or the proper form of the given
word to make the passage coherent. Make sure that your answers are grammatically correct. Write your answers on
the answer sheet.
The behavior of good language learners
A lot of people think that they are not good at learning a new language. However, experts say that we can all
learn from the behavior of good language learners to become ____1____ (good) at languages. Good language
learners look for chances to hear and use the new language outside of the classroom on a daily basis and
consequently learn the language more quickly. If they are studying in a country ____2____ the language is spoken,
this is easy to do. However, if they are studying in a country in which the language is not spoken, there are still
ways to practice outside of class. They might read newspapers and magazines in that language and watch movies.
All of these are great opportunities to practice and can also be fun. In addition, good language learners try different
ways to make their message understood. For example, ____3____ (not know) the word for laundromat, they might
say, ‘the place where you can wash clothes.’ or even try drawing a laundromat with washers and dryers, or acting.
The point is that good language learners are creative and do not easily give up. ____4____ this attitude, they learn
more than those who get frustrated. Finally, good language learners are prepared to take risks. They understand that
making mistakes is natural and necessary in language learning.
As a result, instead of being embarrassed by a mistake or getting frustrated when they do not understand, they
view those ____5____ learning opportunities. For example, if they do not understand the very sentence that
someone said the first time, they are not afraid to ask them to say it again and again ____6____ they do understand.
(B)
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with one proper word or the proper form of the given
word to make the passage coherent. Make sure that your answers are grammatically correct. Write your answers on
the answer sheet.
Stress: Good or Bad?
Stress used to be an almost unknown word, but now that we are used to talking about it, I have found that
people are beginning to get stressed about being stressed.
In recent years, stress ____7____ (regard) as a cause of a whole range of medical problems, from high blood
pressure to mental illness. But like so many other things, it is only too much stress ____8____ does you harm. It is
time you considered that if there were no stress in your life, you would achieve a little. Up to a certain point, the
more stress you are under, the better your performance will be. Beyond a certain point, though, further stress will
only lead to exhaustion, illness and finally a breakdown. You can tell when you are over the top by asking yourself
____9____ number of questions. Do you, for instance, feel that too much is being expected of you, and yet find it
impossible to say no? Do you find yourself getting impatient or____10____ (annoy) with people over unimportant
things?... If the answer to all those questions is yes, you had better control your stress, as you probably are under
more stress than is good for you.
