II. Grammar and Vocabulary
Section A
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passages coherent and grammatically
correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other
blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
Three Thing I Learned While My Plane Crashed
On January 15, 2009, US Airways flight 1549 crash-landed on the Hudson River in New York City. Several
large geese had flown into its engines and caused both of them ____1____ (fail). Due to a combination of pilot skill
and pure luck, everyone on the plane ____2____ (survive) the accident.
Although it is an experience that he hopes no one else has to have, passenger Rick Elias learned a lot that day.
He says that three important lessons came out of that terrifying moment. The first is in a life-or-death situation,
“Everything changes in an instant.” He realized that it was important to do ____3____ that he wanted to do without
postponing them. ____4____ it is fixing a friendship that has problems or going on an adventurous vacation, Elias
says we shouldn’t wait.
As the plane went down, the second lesson Elias learned was that it was important to have negative energy
____5____ (eliminate) from his life. He saw that he had spent too much time winning arguments and feeling
important. Now, he says, “I no longer try to be right; I choose to be happy.”
The final important lesson Elias learned was that although it wasn’t frightening to look death in the eye, it was
sad. He realized ____6____ he really wanted was to see his children grow up. He understood that “the only thing
____7____ matters in my life is being a great dad.” He encourages other parents to be the best mothers and fathers
they can be, ____8____ anything else.
Since then, Elias has lived those lessons. Even though he is the CEO of a growing company, he has also taken
time to do good works. In 2012, he contributes $1 million toward the founding of Golden Door Scholars,
____9____ (provide) scholarships for immigrant students who want to attend university.
As Elias remembers that cold winters day in 2009, he knows “I _____10_____ (give) a gift, which was to be
able to see into the future and come back and live differently.” If you could look into your own future, what would
you change now?

Home schooling is hard even for the best of us
Many parents have toyed with home schooling. The idea is associated with images of children and parents
sitting at the kitchen table, solving the mysteries of maths, science and languages ____11____ of traditional
education.
This week, parents have encountered a harder reality — not home schooling in the usual ____12____, but
enforced schooling-for-home. Kitchen tables piled with books and bowls; frustrated parents trying to remember
how to do improper fractions (可约分数) while taking part in a video conference with work colleagues; fights over
laptops as children insist they need to log on to online lessons — such ____13____ will have been repeated in
households across the world.
Home learning, as more usually ____14____, is not a new idea. The modern home-school movement emerged
in the 1970s, ____15____ by the bikes of John Holt, an American teacher and education writer. He advised parents
to fit the curriculum to the child’s interests, not the other way around. The most recent ____16____ suggest that
close to 60,000 children are home schooled in England, for reasons including mental health issues and special
educational needs. Some parents have given up on what they see as a(n) ____17____ “one-size fits all” education
system. Educationalists, including Britain’s Sir Ken Robinson, have complained that schools’ need to follow strict
curriculums can harm children’s natural creativity.
For parents in today’s health crisis, technology is proving a lifeline. School by Google Hangouts, Microsoft
Teams or Zoom has been hugely popular to keep children focused as well as ____18____ as class. For younger
children, various British celebrities (名流) are offering their services to help with lessons in maths, English as well
as history.
How best to make it work? Experts say children need a clear structure. They should rise, breakfast and work
according to a clear timetable in line with normal schooling, ____19____ studying in a place without distractions.
Make the most of “live” online classes, and additional work and resources, that schools are offering. Allow time for
physical exercise, and family time - and arguably less homework after studying finishes. Above all, parents should
take a deep breath and keep calm. One _____20_____ lesson many home workers-cum-home schoolers will draw
from today’s crisis is this: teachers will never again have to prove that they are worth it.
III. Reading Comprehensions
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage, there are four words or phrases marked A,
B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
During my first improv (即兴表演) class, I learned a core concept of improv: “yes, and.” It means that, as
improvisers, we accept what fellow performers say. If someone says that zebras are librarians, for example, then
zebras are librarians. We do not ____21____ the logic. we say “yes” and continue with the scene as if nothing is
wrong.
To do this ____22____, our teacher warned us that we’d have to avoid second-guessing ourselves. Sometimes
scenes go in unexpected directions. The best improv____23____ when performers stay open to different
possibilities and say whatever pops into their minds.
I got a taste of how ____24____ that is when acting out my first scene. My classmate turned to me and said,
“Mom is going to be so mad.” Mad about what? My mind spun out ideas, and my inner critic shot them all down.
We broke the car? No, that’s too easy. We failed a test? No, you don’t want your classmates thinking you’re stupid
on the first day. I finally ____25____ an answer: “Yes, we’re going to be late for dinner.” The scene proceeded
from there, and we eventually finished as two sisters who lost their way on a hiking trip.
The first few scenes were hard, but as weeks turned into months, I became more comfortable thinking on my
feet. I never ____26____ my inner critic entirely, but over time, I didn’t police my words with quite so much vigor.
I also became better at ____27____, relating to my conversation partners, and communicating clearly in the
moment.
The training came in handy 6 months ago, when I was giving a seminar (研讨课) about my science. An
audience member surprised me with a question that didn’t ____28____ the information I’d presented. Instead of
getting annoyed, I ____29____ the “yes, and” approach — accepting the question at face value and letting my mind
focus on why it was asked. That helped me find an appropriate answer.
The benefits of improv go beyond _____30_____. Early on in graduation school, I would get stuck when I got
unexpected data in my experiments; my inner critic would assume I had made a mistake. But now, after accepting
the “yes, and” concept, I no longer go into an experiment thinking that I already _____31_____ the story my data
are going to tell.
Last year, I used that approach after encountering confusing data. Instead of getting _____32_____, I kept
exploring the data and ended up identifying a new type of cell. If I hadn’t stayed open to the possibility that the
results were _____33_____, I would have missed out on the most exciting finding of my PhD. so far.
All scientists can benefit from this lesson. If the data say zebras are librarians, then it’s worth investigating
whether zebras are, _____34_____, librarians. Our job as scientists isn’t to get data that _____35_____ a pre-
understood story. Our job is to say “yes, and”.
21. A. provide B. follow C. question D. ignore
