Section A
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and
grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of
the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
High-fructose corn syrup. (高 果糖 玉米 糖浆 ) Artificial flavors and colors. What do these
things have in common? They are found in many (21) ______ (process) foods. But the clean label
movement wants to kick them out of your grocery store! Clean label is a consumer-powered
movement that promotes food made with simple, natural ingredients. Removing artificial
ingredients can protect consumers from various health problems.
But finding replacements for artificial ingredients is not easy. When one food company tried
to change an ingredient in its salad dressing recipe, it led to big problems. The ingredient switch
changed the color and the quality of the product. Changes like (22) ______ can cause companies
to lose business. Customers expect a certain taste and look of a product and complain when they
don't get it.
Companies are working hard to provide natural substitutes for artificial products. But when it
comes to issues like food preservation, going all-natural isn't as easy as it sounds.
The clean label movement presents food makers with a challenge. Consumers want great
products but with few if any artificial ingredients. It's difficult to meet those demands while (23)
