When it comes to food coloring, why should we have to prove just exactly how and why the
substance causes a negative effect on the people who consume it before we can __31__ it? If this
were a necessary or meaningful food ingredient in any way, sure, that would be a reasonable
standard. But food coloring has no nutritional value. Why are we __32__ it?
Most likely because it helps companies sell products. Pretty food pays off because aesthetics
(美学)in food does __33__. We have relied on __34__ cues for thousands of years to help us
determine what is edible, nutritious, and safe to eat. Man has adapted to appreciating natural
colors, including a variety of green, red, pink, orange, yellow, and purple products. Colors __35__
that food is ripe or that it contains healthy compounds. Because of that __36__ background, color
is money for food manufacturers. Children are especially attracted to variety of bright, vibrant
colors and succumb to(屈从于)targeted marketing.
Food aesthetics can also affect how we look at taste. In one study, when subjects were given
sugar water in different __37__ of red, they reported that the deep red drinks tasted sweeter than
the light red ones. We’ve been programed to expect certain things from certain colors. Another
study showed people had a harder time __38__ drink flavors when the drinks did not have the
expected colors. We expect what nature has taught us and even though our food system has
changed dramatically in the past several decades our expectations have yet to __39__ up. Food
companies can instead use this knowledge to __40__ us and make their processed products appear
more delicious.

Would you like to work for a company that lists making its employees happy as one of its
goals? According to a recent report in The Guardian, a new wave is rolling over workplaces in the
US, the UK and other European countries. Among the CEOs, CFOs and CPOs, a new executive
has __41__. Meet the CHO, or Chief Happiness Officer, who is responsible for the contentment of
individual employees.
“The CHO’s job is to take different initiatives to make people happier, like celebrations,
training, events and similar __42__ in the workplace that help people do great work and see the
purpose of what they do,” Alexander Kjerulf, co-founder at Woohoo Inc Denmark, told The
Guardian. Kjerulf conducts speeches and workshops worldwide to help companies such as Lego
and IKEA create happier workplaces.
Why do companies care about whether their employees are happy or not? The theory goes
that happier workers are more __43__, so happiness turns out to be in the company’s best interest.
__44__, no boss wants bored and unmotivated workers.
What does the CHO do? According to story in US magazine The New Republic, a CHO’s
daily duties include __45__ the emotional well-being of their coworkers and the office
atmosphere. They __46__ workplace policy and culture in order to create the conditions for
happiness. To achieve this, CHOs __47__ surveys that measure contentment. They also lead
__48__ on everything from communication skills to mindfulness meditation.
It seems that happiness is no longer a philosophical and romantic concept. The __49__ of
happiness has become a business itself. And CHOs may not be enough for some compaines. In
order to make themselves more productive and profitable, some businesses now use digital
technology to __50__ their workers’ well-being. For example, a bank has found through the new
technology that workers are more productive if they have more social __51__. So it introduced a
shared 15-minute coffee break. Having a boss who __52__ cares whether you are happy or not
might sound nice to an employee, but there are some problems, says The New Republic article.
Workplace monitoring measures aimed at promoting productivity may __53__ upon workers’
privacy. And the article claims making someone else professionally responsible for our __54__ is
dangerous: “ It represents an intrusion (闯入)into our emotional lives that should not be
permitted to any kind of authority figure -- be it corporate or governmental -- regardless of
__55__”
