World’s Most Disability-Friendly Travel Destinations
Denver, Colorado, USA
Though it is located in the Rocky Mountains, Denver itself is relatively flat, and actually one of the best cities
in the US for wheelchair access. The city offers a wide range of entertaining and cultural activities for people with
disabilities, as well as a fully accessible underground transport system. Many of the city’s museums are fully
accessible and offer special tours for people with hearing disabilities.
Berlin, Germany
In recent years, the German capital has carried out a policy to serve people with disabilities and invested
heavily in changing the city into a highly accessible environment. In 2013, Berlin won the EU City Access Award,
receiving special praise for its efforts to create a barrier-free environment and its highly accessible transport system.
The majority of Berlin’s theaters and museums are accessible for the disabled, as are many restaurants and bars
throughout the city.
Milan, Italy
The winner of the 2016 EU City Access Award, Milan earned its title for its untiring effort to create a wide-
ranging atmosphere for all. Once almost inaccessible for people in wheelchairs, the city made many improvements
to remove barriers for the disabled and elderly by improving its transportation system, overcoming architectural and
sensory barriers and developing a commitment to full engagement with its disabled people.
Gdynia, Poland
Poland is actually well-known for its efforts to make public transit available (可利用的) to all. Almost all
of the city’s buses are currently accessible to those with a disability, and the city also features a unique information
system that includes Braille (盲文) signs for the blind. Information boards across the city are easily accessible
to those in wheelchairs and most restaurants and museums have parking for the disabled.

88-year-old Emma Patterson is retiring (退休) from her role as a foster (代养的) mother, a position
she has held with strong determination for tens of years.
This great woman, who raised her four children and 10 grandchildren, has also opened her home and heart 10
nearly 40 foster children over the years, raising as many as nine children at a time. Unusually, she did all of this as a
single mother.
Recently, Patterson’s great contributions were recognized by Montgomery County, which honored her with a
special award for her service. According to a county spokesperson, Patterson is one of the longest-serving foster
parents in the county and has housed more children for long than almost anyone else. Her great work and effect
have left a lasting mark on the community.
“I am happy lo honor Ms Patterson for her great work to our community over all these years. I’m glad she gets
the kind of praise she should get. I hope her story inspires others to help children and families in trouble as well.
Montgomery County is not alone in having a great need for new foster families,” said Montgomery County
Executive Marc Elrich, who presented Patterson with the award.
For Paterson, the greatest joy of her parenting journey has been seeing the growth and success of her foster
children. “I’m very proud of all of the children because they all have just turned out to be just wonderful human
beings,” she shared with a smile. “I’m just delighted that I was able to do something to help them to have such
wonderful achievements in life.”
