Traveling is often done by plane or by car, but don’t forget about trains! Taking a trip by railway is a
great way to get a first-hand view of a place.
Trans-Siberian Railway, Russia
The Trans-Siberian Railway is 5,772 miles long, making it one of the world’s longest train routes—it
goes across Russia! You start in Moscow, cross the Ural Mounains and then the Siberian forest. Over the
course of eight days, you’ll witness Lake Baikal, the world’s largest freshwater lake by volume.

the Scottish Highlands near Great Britain’s highest mountain, Ben, Nevis. While in transit (途中), you’ll
see green hills, small towns, and cross over the famous Glenfinnan bridge over a valley.
Belmond Hiram Bingham, Peru
Named after the American explorer who rediscovered the Inca site in 1911, Belmond Hiram Bingham

I’ve been writing now for 34 years. It all started when I was just 18 years old. As a boy growing up, I
probably read hundreds of books. I read mysteries, science fiction, thrillers, and just about any other type
of
book I could find. I had a thirst for knowledge that never seemed to disappear, no matter how many
books I
read over the years.
Then suddenly, I found that I too had ideas of my own that I wanted to write and share. I wanted to
share things that were full of goodness, love, joy, and happiness. I tried to ignore my desire at first, but as
any writer will tell you, once ideas awaken inside of you, they don’t leave you alone until you write them
down. I didn’t have a computer, or even a typewriter , but I grabbed a pen and a notebook and wrote
down everything that was burning inside of me.
When I was finally done, I didn’t know how to share my work with the world. There was no internet
back then, no smartphones, and no social media. However, I sought out the editor of my local newspaper
and asked if he would like to print what I’d written. He was a good man, full of both wisdom and kindness.
He not only printed my first story but agreed to publish anything else I was willing to write.
After that, of course, nothing could stop me. I continued to write new articles each week, which were
published in different local papers and later on the internet. Years later, I even self-published two
collections of my stories in book form.
Through my writing, I slowly became a better person. Writing allowed me to discover the goodness
and light that exist in us all. I also found that we are all writers, whether we put pen to paper or not.
With every choice we make, with every thought we think, and with every action we take, we are
writing our own life story.
24.Why did the author start writing?
A.He wanted to try writing thrillers.
B.He wanted to express his own ideas.
C.He thought it would be easy after reading so much.
D.He wanted to inspire others with his reading experience.
25.What can we know about the author’s writing career?
A.It was busy and lonely. B.It was lucky but short.
C.He pushed through difficulties. D.He got tired of writing every week.
26.After publishing his works, the author .
A.felt writing had improved him B.encouraged others to put pen to paper
C.used social media to spread his influence D.often thought about the choices he
made
27.Which of the following best describes the author?
A.Humorous.
B.Hardworking.
C.Hard to satisfy. D.Determined to be famous.
C
When scientists go to a forest to study monkeys and their habits and behaviors, how do they know
who’s who?
In the past, scientists had to make marks on each of the animals to distinguish them. But in the future,
they may have a much easier way to tell them apart thanks to facial recognition technology.
A research team from China’s Northwest University is using facial recognition technology to identify
thousands of snub-nosed monkeys that live on Qinling Mountain in Shaanxi province.
Similar to human facial recognition, the technology that is used to identify monkeys uses their facial
features to create a database that includes every monkey, Xinhua reported. “When the system is fully
developed, we can connect it with cameras set up in the mountains. The system will automatically
recognize the monkeys, name them and analyze their behavior,” said Zhang He, a member of the research
team. “For each snub-nosed monkey, we have 700 to 800 image samples, and the recognition success rate
is
94 percent,” Zhang added.
“We used mobile phones and portable cameras with the monkeys in tests at distances ranging from
about 3 to 10 meters,” said He Gang, a member of the research team and an associate professor in the
College of Life Sciences at Northwest University. “There is no need to interfere(干扰) with the monkeys.
Such a method of sampling is clearly non-invasive(非侵害性的).”
Compared to humans, facial recognition technology for monkeys is more complicated because of their
hairier faces. The color of their hair causes them to blend into their environment. These factors make it
harder for computers to identify them.
“Monkeys do not cooperate with researchers in the same way humans do. It is difficult to take
high-quality pictures and videos of them, which are needed to improve the system,” said Li Baoguo,
leader
of the research team.
Currently, there are about 4,000 snub-nosed monkeys living on Qinling Mountain. The team’s goal is
to successfully identify every monkey that lives there.
28.What problem do scientists face while studying monkeys according to the text?
A.How to mark them. B.How to tell them apart.
C.How to understand their behavior. D.How to observe them clearly
29.What does the article tell us about facial recognition technology for monkeys?
A.It is now widely adopted in China.
B.It works better than human facial recognition.
C.It will use monkeys’ behavior to create a database.
D.It can help scientists study monkeys without disturbing them.
30.What does “these factors” in paragraph 6 refer to?
a. Image samples. b. Hairy faces. c. Hair color. d. The environment.
A.ab B.ac C.bc D.bd
31.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the article?
A.To introduce a new way to identify monkeys.
B.To show the importance of studying monkeys.
C.To compare different ways to identify monkeys.
D.To explain difficulties in developing a new system.
D
Catch your reusable bag and kiss your plastic bags goodbye. Plastic waste is on its way out, thanks to
these governmental bans (禁令) from around the world.
From Indiana to Maine, governments at all levels in the US are forcing bans and improving recycling.
People are shopping smarter and companies are doing better to ensure the protection of our environment.
Slowly but surely, the world is entering a brighter future as more and more countries follow. But there’s still
a lot of work to be done—or undone.
Since the 1950s, researchers say that about more than 8.3 billion tons of plastic has been produced.
And 60% of that waste has ended up in the environment. That number has increased quickly over the years.
For example, it was recorded that the world’s plastic production doubled from 1976 (50 million tons) to
1989 (100 million tons). It was highest at 368 million in 2019 before decreasing to 367 million in 2020.
A million tons decrease of plastic production is not enough to deal with the rising pressures plastic
puts into the environment. We still do not know how long it takes for plastic to break down. It means that
about 12 million tons of plastic waste that entered the ocean in 2010 is still breaking into microplastics and
filling up the stomachs of birds and sea animals. The plastic going into our environment is not going away.
While recent studies of plastic-eating enzymes and bacteria ( 酶 和 菌 ) offer some hope for the future
of
plastic waste management, the best way to deal with our environmental stress is through decrease.
In 2020, New York City began to ban plastic bags. But this wasn’t the first plastic bag ban in a US
state. In fact, the US wasn’t even the first country to introduce this idea. Back in 2002, Bangladesh became
the first country to implement a plastic bag ban. Since then, other countries have followed, introducing their
own ways to fight with the continuing plastic bags.
