Do Dolphins () Have a Language?
We know that dolphins make unique sounds, but is that a language? If you're interested in it, you are
welcome to the activity recommended by Denise Herzing!
About Denise Herzing
{#{QQABRYSAggCIABJAAQgCEwGiCECQkBGAAKoOQFAIMAABgBNABAA=}#}
3
Denise Herzing of Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is the organiser and research director of the
Wild Dolphin Project, which has a goal of understanding dolphins' social system (), behaviour, and
communication. For over thirty years, she has spent each summer watching Atlantic dolphins carefully in
the Bahamas.
Activity Guide:
Purpose:
Dolphins use sound to communicate, but they can't make sounds in the way we humans make. Out of
the water dolphins can make different sounds by changing the shape of their blowhole (), which is
similar to changing the shape of our own mouths. Underwater, though, they use a totally different system,
and they make sounds without letting any air out. You can learn more about how that works here. In this
activity we're going to try to talk like a dolphin.
Materials:
Nothing! But find a partner, maybe a brother or sister or a parent — or if you have one, a dog or cat.
After all, this activity is about communication between humans and animals.
How To Do It:
Take a deep breath, hold your nose to keep it shut, and try to communicate with your partner. If your
partner is a pet, try saying its name or asking it to "come here".
When you're done, think about what made it hard, what solutions you found, and think why dolphins
may have developed to communicate in this way.
Then listen to sounds from all kinds of sea animals and compare your dolphin sound to theirs.
46. What can we learn about Denise Herzing?
A. She holds the activity in FAU.
B. She is an expert in dolphins.
C. She wants to find a partner for her research.
D. She fell in love with dolphins when young.
47. What would you have to do for the activity?
A. Have a pet next to you.
B. Keep breathing deeply.
C. Talk with your nose closed.
D. Compare dolphins with other animals.
48. Where can the text be found?
A. In a diary. B. In a report. C. In a travel brochure. D. In an activity book.
B
I work as a waiter in a café and love the job most of the time. I spend the morning hours with all the
coffee and see the friendly customers () every day. But there're always those mornings when a few
unwanted customers come in. Maybe they are late for work, or simply wake up on the wrong side of the
bed. They often make a short loud request () for coffee without looking at me directly. It is hard to
stand. And some customers are just discourteous and they believe that customers are always right, even if
they act like fools. Things like good manners (礼貌) are often unseen in such situations.
Just like me, Austin Simms of Cups Coffee and Tea has had enough of this. Taking matters into his
own hand, to help some customers with their manners, he placed a sign outside showing their new pricing
method.
His new sign shows the cost of a coffee as $5. If a customer walks up to the server and simply says,
"Small coffee," he/she will need to pay $5 for that small coffee. The price of a "small coffee, please" goes
down to $3. In other words, a nice "please" with a request for a small coffee will drop the price by $2. The
coffee only costs $1.75 if the customer says, "Hello. One small coffee, please." So you can see that
customers that show the most manners get the largest discounts (折扣).
The new strategy () certainly has got some people to rethink their manners given that the news
has spread across the world. We can be sure that at least some customers have changed their behavior, and
that's a good thing, even if they do it to get discounted coffee. The more you do something, the more you
get used to it. So, this little strategy that the business owner used could actually end up causing many
people to be more polite all the time.
49. What does the underlined word "discourteous" in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Impolite.
B. Proud.
C. Confused.
D. Busy.
50. Which of the following decides the price of coffee according to Austin's method?
A. The size of the coffee customers request.
B. The way customers talk to servers.
C. Customers' understanding of servers' work.
D. Customers' relationship with servers.
51. Which word could best describe Austin Simms?
A. Helpful.
B. Creative.
C. Humorous.
D. Responsible.
52. What is the author's purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To show he supports Austin's method.
B. To explain the influence of discounts.
C. To show the importance of politeness.
D. To introduce the future of the café business.
