High school freshmen always have a lot of questions on their minds. “What can I do when I grow
up?” is one of them. It's definitely not too early to start thinking about this tough question. The
following tips may help equip you for your future career.
Think beyond grades
Getting good grades in high school is important, but focusing only on straight A's could go
wrong. Spending too much time on your schoolwork will leave you little time to explore opportunities
outside of the classroom. Extracurricular (课外的) activities are necessary because they serve as forms
of career exploration. They can help you figure out your work preferences, like whether you are a
“people person (擅长交际的人)”or prefer to work alone. Nowadays, most well-known colleges care
about candidates' experiences as much as their grades.
Seek advice from grown-ups
Talk to your parents, teachers and school counselors () about how they started their careers.
Even though you're not interested in the careers they are in, it would be useful to learn about the
process which got them where they are now. If you find your friends' mother doing a worthwhile job
by chance, ask her if job shadowing () is possible in her company during vacation. After all,
seeing a typical day in the position you have an interest in can be an invaluable experience.
Start your search online
If you really have no idea what you can do when you grow up, take online career quizzes to get
ideas about what professions naturally match your skills, interests and personality traits (特点). For the
time being, you just need to focus on finding a field or two that interests you, rather than a specific
career. Chances are you'll change your mind several times before finding a career that you want to
stick to. Starting to explore career options now can at least help you decide what your potential major
might be.
36. Spending some time taking part in after-school activities can help high school students .
A. get A's in all subjects
B. explore their work preferences
C. have access to well-known universities
D. get along with their classmates
37. It is suggested that high school students find out their from online career quizzes.
A. possible professions B. main disadvantages
C. specific occupations D. ideal majors
38. This article was probably written by a .
A. college professor B. school counselor

A couple had a son eleven years after they married. They were a loving couple and the boy was
the apple of their eye. When the boy was around four years old, one day the father was very tired after
work so he asked his wife to pick up their son. The mother, who was very busy in the kitchen, totally
forgot about it.
Later the boy lost his way on the street. When the son was found missing, the mother hurried to
look for him, but she didn’t find him. The mother felt very sad and didn’t know how to face her
husband.
When the father went to the police station after hearing that the son was missing, he looked at his
wife and said just four words. What do you think the four words were? The husband just said "I love
you, darling."
The son was missing. If he had picked him up earlier, this would not have happened. There is no
point in blaming () anyone. His wife had also lost her only child. What his wife needed at that
moment was comfort and understanding from her husband. That is what the husband gave his wife.
Several weeks later, with the help of the police, the couple finally found their lost son. The family’s
relationship became stronger over that time.
Sometimes we spend lots of time asking who is to blame. We miss many chances to give each
other support and let each other feel the warmth of human relationships. Get rid of all your
unwillingness to forgive, selfishness, and fears and you will find the world is much more wonderful.

People who frequently eat fruit are more likely to report greater positive mental wellbeing and are
less likely to report symptoms of depression than those who do not, according to new research from
the College of Health and Life Sciences, Aston University. The team also found that people who eat
savoury () snacks such as crisps (), which are low in nutrients, are more likely to report
greater levels of anxiety.
Published in the British Journal of Nutrition, the study surveyed 428 adults from across the UK
and looked at the relationship between their consumption of fruit, vegetables, sweet and savoury
snacks, and their psychological health. The research found that both nutrient-rich fruit and nutrient-
poor savoury snacks appeared to be linked to psychological health. They also found that there was no
direct association between eating vegetables and psychological health. Based on the survey, the more
often people ate fruit, the lower they scored for depression and the higher for mental wellbeing,
independent of the overall quantity of fruit intake. By contrast, there was no link between these
everyday memory lapses () and fruit and vegetables intake or sweet snacks, suggesting a unique
