My philosophy ( 哲 学 ) professor was a typical eccentric philosopher, whose behavior was a bit strange.
His disheveled ( 蓬乱的) appearance was highlighted by a well-worn tweed sport coat and poor fitting thick
glasses, which often rested on the tip of his nose. Every now and then, as most philosophy professors do, he
would dig into one of those existential “what’s the meaning of life” discussions. Many of those discussions
went nowhere, but there were a few that really hit home. This was one of them:
“ Respond to the following questions by a show of hands, ” my professor instructed.
“ How many of you can tell me something about your parents? ” Everyone’s hand went up.
“ How many of you can tell me something about your grandparents? ” About three fourths of the class
raised their hands.
“ How many of you can tell me something about your great-grandparents? ” Two out of sixty students
raised their hands.
“ Look around the room, ” he said. “ In just two short generations hardly any of us even know who our
own great-grandparents were. Oh sure, maybe we have an old photograph stored away in a musty cigar box or
know the classic family story about how one of them walked five miles to school barefoot. But how many of us
really know who they were, what they thought, what they were proud of, what they were afraid of, or what they
dreamed about? Think about that. Within three generations our ancestors (祖先) are all but forgotten. Will this
happen to you? ”
“ Here’s a better question. Look ahead three generations. You are long gone. Instead of you sitting in this
room, now it’s your greatgrandchildren. What will they have to say about you? Will they know about you? Or
will you be forgotten, too? ”
“ Is your life going to be a warning or an example? What legacy ( 遗产) will you leave? The choice is
yours. Class is over. ”
Nobody rose from their seats for a good five minutes.
24. Which of the following can best describe the professor ?
A. Untidy but considerate. B. Fashionable and helpful.
C. Neat and responsible. D. Odd but thoughtful.
25. Why does the professor mention “photograph” and “family story” in Paragraph 6 ?
A. To share his own interesting stories.
B. To suggest new ways to know the ancestors.
C. To indicate people’s understanding of the ancestors are shallow.
D. To prove they are good ways to know the ancestors.
26. What can we know about this philosophy class ?
A. It went nowhere like the previous ones.
B. It inspired our thinking about life.
C. The professor was discontent with our answers.
D. The professor offered us his answers to the questions.
27. What is the best title of the passage ?
A. Our strange philosophy professor. B. Our memorable and respectable ancestors.
C. A gap among three generations. D. A lesson about legacy.

Over the past years, experts have carried out much research to explore different ways to encourage
children’s learning. Especially, there has been a common focus on how physical activity, separated from the
learning activities, can improve children’s learning. However, there has been less of a focus aimed at the
possibility of integrating (合并) physical activity into the learning activities.

Researchers from the University of Copenhagen did the Basketball Mathematics study at five Danish
elementary schools, the main purpose of which is to develop a learning activity that integrates basketball and
mathematics and examine how it might affect children’s motivation (动机) for mathematics. 756 children from
40 different classes participated in the project, where about half of them — once a week for six weeks — had
Basketball Mathematics during gym class, while the other half played basketball without mathematics.
“During classes with Basketball Mathematics, the children had to collect numbers and perform
calculations ( 计 算 ) related to various basketball exercises. An example could be counting how many times
they could shoot a goal from three meters away vs at a one meter distance, and adding up the numbers. Both the
math and basketball elements could be adapted to suit the children’s levels, as well as being changed for
whether it was addition, division or some other operations that needed practicing,” explains Linn Dalsgaard, a
leading researcher.
The results indicated that children’s motivation for math integrated with basketball was 16% higher
compared to classroom math learning. Children also experienced a 14% increase in self-determination
compared with classroom teaching. At the same time Basketball Mathematics had their math confidence
improved.
“ We are planning to do extra research to examine whether the Basketball Mathematics model can
strengthen performance in mathematics. Once we have the ultimate results, we hope that they will inspire
school teachers and headmasters to give priority to more physical activity and movement in such subjects.
Eventually, we hope to succeed in putting these tools into school system and daily education,” says Associate
Professor Jacob Wienecke.
28. What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To explain the reason for the study. B. To present the advantage of the study.
C. To introduce a way to raise math grades. D. To carry out a review of former research.
29. What can we learn about the study ?
A. Kids were divided into 40 groups. B. It adjusted activities for different kids.
C. It required kids to do math after playing basketball. D. Not all kids played basketball.
30. What effect does basketball have on the participants ?
A. More motivation for exercise. B. Better performance and confidence in math.
C. A gain in desire to learn math. D. A decline in determination to learn.
31. How does Jacob Wienecke expect the study to help educators ?
A. Create more opportunities for physical exercise. B. Inspire students’ math confidence.
C. Notice the benefits of physical exercise. D. Build physical activity into teaching.

Even when communicating with nature we depend on technology for help — but then, so did Thoreau ( 梭
罗) at Walden Pond (瓦尔登湖).
Walking in the same woods yesterday, I let myself wander aimlessly, communicating with nature.
I admired the breathtaking scenery near and far thanks to my progressivelens eyeglasses. Occasionally
I’d pull out my smart phone to shoot pictures on anything interesting. At times, I referred to my smart watch to
check on my heartbeat, mileage and calorie burn. Eventually I realized I was quite lost. Not a problem of
course. Online maps came to my aid.
But something hit me. In what I’d intended as a nature experience, here I was turning to very advanced
technology to help myself out. This awareness encouraged a reconsideration of everything that happened
during my “nature walk,” which had been technologically improved every step of the way. I’d been
functioning as a man machine combination (结合): a cyborg.
What would the true naturalist Thoreau think of that? My first thought was that he’d be shocked. But later
I did some research. Thoreau enjoyed what his spyglass discovered, like this eagle from his journal:
Lying on the ground with my glass, I could watch him very easily … till I almost lost him in the clouds … I
think I have got the worth of my glass now that it has revealed(显示) to me the white-headed eagle.
Famously, Thoreau always set out equipped with a walking stick, which he used not only for support but
also to take measurements of water and snow levels. His hat was also a tool, which he called his “botany box.”
And he was prepared even with needles and thread ( 针 线 ), so when stepping out of the woods, he was “ the
best dressed.” Clearly, Thoreau was a bit of a cyborg himself.
Thinking more deeply, I realized we’ve come a long way from our hunter-gatherer ancestors, who walked
from necessity and depended on nature’s gift. Cyborgs are us.
32. What is the purpose of the text ?
A. To recommend Thoreau’s book Walden Pond.
B. To share the reflections on man’s dependence on nature.
C. To argue that humans have developed into cyborgs.
D. To question whether people are technology dependent.
33. Which picture best illustrates a cyborg in the author’s eye ?
A. B.C.D.
34. Why does the author quote (引用) Thoreau’s journal ?
A. To prove that even naturalists use technology.
B. To show that Thoreau is a true naturalist.
C. To explain how to prepare for a nature walk.
D. To describe the natural beauty Thoreau enjoyed.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards being a cyborg ?
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
