I can't stop thinking about the video of a 10-ycar-old girl facing her fears at the top of
a ski jump. Her fear, her courage, her joy, her pride-the whole thing has really struck a
chord ( 触 动 心 弦 ) in me. Of course, the video makes me reflect on the times when I
experienced the similar feelings. I remember how in those moments every cell in my body
vibrated () with life. But it also reminded me of the times I didn't choose the more
risky options.
I've always been a little bit of a chicken when it comes to my physical safety but I
definitely pushed myself more when I was younger. Now that I'm a mom, I feel like I have
to stay safe. I worry about what my kids would do without me and that leads me to make
safe choices.
But as I watch this fourth grader overcome her fears I think about how much this
experience will mean to her in the future; she'll always have this as a reference point when
she comes up against something scary or difficult. She'll be able to look back on this and
say, “Well, I did that and the worst part was the bad feeling at the beginning.”
I know I want that view for my 8-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son. I know I want
them to take risks. Maybe not every day, maybe not ski-jumping, definitely not extreme
sports, but I deeply hope that they will push themselves to their limits, facing down fear
with whatever tools they can use and enjoying the great rush that comes from attempting
scary things and getting to the other side of them.
So if I want that for my kids, I have to honestly look at my own relationship with risk
and say that yes... I play it safe. And I have to ask myself another question: Am I doing
enough? Or do I need to make some changes in-my life so that my daughter and son can
be inspired to make their own brave decisions?
24. How did the author react when watching that video?
A. She felt ashamed of herself. B. She realized that sport was dangerous.
C. She thought of her own past experiences.
D. She regretted taking part in some risky activities.
25. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 most probably refer to?
A. Making safe choices is important. B. Taking a risk isn't as scary as it seems.
C. Taking a risk can make you feel bad. D.Overcoming fears requires a long time.
26. The author most probably thinks that she should ___________.
A. let her kids play with the girl in the video.
B. certainly allow her kids to try ski-jumping.
C. use some tools to practice her kids' courage.
D. participate in more risky activities to set an example.
27. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Pushing ourselves to our limits B. Paying attention to kids' activities
C. Learning a kind of risky activity D. Encouraging kids to choose what they like

The first time I realized that I had a love for sports competitions was during the Field
Day in elementary school. Small for my age, and more of a bookworm than a sports
enthusiast, I had suffered that special humiliation of being picked last for various gym
teams. The Field Day, which focused on individual skills, was different. In the Softball
Throw event, I got my first taste of sporting victory. Credit goes to the example of my first
coach, my father. He lifted weights every morning at home. He bought us all baseball
gloves and hats, and in the warm months, we spent hours playing catch. Come fall, our
backyard football games began with passing practice.
Once I got to sixth grade and switched to private school, our entire student body was
assigned to either the Red or the White team. Throughout the year, we competed against
each other in various games and exercises for points. I eventually became president of The
Committee of Games, accelerating my competitive fever. However, in girls’ sports games
at my school, I was no star. I also played on the field hockey team and the basketball team.
School sports did not bleed into the weekends, as they do today, but at home, playing
tennis, skating, skiing and biking were simply normal things we did. During break time,
magazines were also quite popular for us teens. These regularly featured articles on
physical exercise. Somehow, my college roommate and I took up the habit of completing
Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) exercises every day, a practice that continued into my
marriage, when we had no spare funds to use to join a gym.
So, though it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation evolved in adulthood
into a sports and fitness focus, considered essential even on vacation. I still love reading
and the arts, too. As far as I’m concerned, life is the richest with my feet in both worlds.
28What does the underlined word “humiliation” mean in Paragraph 1?
Aresponsibility. BDisappointment Cshame Ddesire
29What did the author owe her victory in the Softball Throw event to?
AHer advanced sports outfits. BHer confidence in her sports ability.
CThe sports talent inherited from her father.
DThe guidance and training offered by her father.
30What happened after the author stepped into adulthood?
AShe generally exercised on weekends. BShe joined Royal Canadian Air Force.
CShe preferred reading to exercising. DShe maintained her love for sports.
31What is the authors purpose in writing the article?
ATo describe how her father built her interest in sports.
BTo recall her childhood memories about sports.
CTo express her passion for sports and fitness.
DTo emphasize the benefits of physical exercise.

foundation. It took just over a year to get the ground ready. The workers started to build
