When I was a little girl, I was foolish enough to believe everything adults said. Even I was
scared to death by a word my mother said.
It all started when my elder brother came home with a heavy bag of cherries(樱桃)a
friend gave him. In order to spend a pleasant afternoon, my sister suggested we have a
competition to see who could eat the most cherries in as short a time as possible and be the
winner. We all jumped at her idea, and the competition began in no time. Our action had to be
fast and we must know how to bite in the middle of the cherry to chew and spit the seed out
losing no time. I realized that this wasn’t a good game to play. And I suddenly found that I
have swallowed more than one seed down to my stomach. Then Mother came and laughed and
said to me, “tonight when you sleep, a cherry tree will grow out from your head.” I was jittery
and scared. I believed every word she said at that age. I was rather frightened that night
thinking how I was going to make it to school the next morning if I had a tree on top of my
head or how I would leave this world just like that because of the cherry seeds in my stomach.
I couldn’t sleep the whole night.
Well, the next morning, I woke up to my surprise , and discovered nothing had changed.
My head was normal as it was. But one thing remains unchanged until this day. My love for
cherries stays forever.

A retired United States soldier named Terry McGlade, who had served in Iraq and
Afghanistan, says his dog Major is a hero. He is specially trained to sense when McGlade is
about to have a seizure (突然发作), get his phone and dial 911 for help.
When Major had recently sensed an incident about to happen, and McGlade collapsed
and hit the floor, Major was able to get to McGlade’s phone, and more or less bite on the
phone which is specially set up so that when multiple buttons are pressed and held in, it goes
into emergency call mode (模式), and dials 911.
“He was actually able to get my phone out of my pocket,” McGlade said.
The 911 operators who got the call from Major said they never heard him bark or
anything. However, they could hear what sounded like a confused man in the background, and
did get quite doubtful after quite a few calls from McGlade’s cell phone kept coming in. Quite
clearly, Major was using his leg and also stepping on the screen to get the phone to dial for
help.
After Major was sure someone would be on their way to help, he then made his way out
to the front of the house to wait. When the police and ambulance arrived, he led them into the
house and right to McGlade, still in danger.
“I probably would have been in severe trouble if he hadn’t called,” McGlade said.
McGlade was taken to the hospital, where he was kept overnight for observation, but
thanks to his best friend, and now hero of the day, Major. He is feeling much better, and will
make a full recovery with little risk of lasting damage from this particular incident.
28. What does the underlined word “collapsed” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Slept. B. Fell. C. Cried. D. Ran.
29. How did Major manage to make the phone go into emergency call mode?
A. By seeking somebody else nearby for help. B. By sending a text message to the 911
operator.
C. By keeping barking at the other side of the phone. D. By biting and stepping on the
buttons of the phone.
30. What do we know about the incident?
A. Major had made one call to the 911 center before the ambulance came.
B. Operators in the 911 center were confused by Majors calls.
C. Major guided the doctor directly to where McGlade lay.
D. McGlade has completely recovered.
31. Which of the following can best describe Major?
A. Brave and naughty. B. Serious and clever.
C. Calm and lovely. D. Intelligent and devoted.

There is a picture: A polar bear is lying lifeless on a beach. On the shore, in the
background, stand three guards, talking to each other. One of them has a gun hanging casually
on his shoulder. This powerful image has made people question the motivation (动机) for this
kind of tourism, or ecotourism. Does our proximity (接近) to large animals in the wild,
frequently caused by a desire for exciting images, lead to such animals becoming accustomed
to (习惯于) human contact? If that is the case, surely the losing side will end up paying the
price for such proximity.
To my sorrow, I have recently returned from a trip to Svalbard, and stood two weeks ago
on the very beach where the bear was shot. The bears death should never have happened. Was
the beach examined beforehand? Was there access to flares (照明弹) to scare off a bear that
appeared suddenly? These are standard measures for any operator. The incident is probably the
result of a terrible systematic (制度的) failure.
However, the incident should not deny the value of ecotourism. In its best form, this kind
of travel has very little influence, or indeed has a positive effect, on the environment where it
takes place. This can be achieved by making financial donations to conservation groups,
providing income to local communities, or ensuring protection of certain areas or animals. In
Svalbard, visitors become ambassadors (大使) for the endangered polar bear, increasing
awareness of the fact that the far greater danger they are facing is the sea ice melt in the Arctic
Ocean.
Ecotourism is an expanding market that brings benefits as well as challenges to the
regions around the world in which it operates. Simply closing off these regions is not the
answer.
32. Why was the polar bear dead?
A. It was probably killed by tourists.
B. It was probably frightened to death by flares.
C. The proper rules weren’t probably followed.
D. The beach wasn’t probably equipped with safety equipment.
33. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. Ecotourism could be developed properly.
B. Financial donations should be strongly encouraged.
C. Environmental awareness has greatly increased.
D. Visitors are ashamed of ecotourism.
34. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggest?
A. More challenges haven’t yet been accepted.
B. Better measures for leading ecotourism are a good choice.
C. The environmental benefits from ecotourism are very obvious.
D. The positive effects of protecting tourists haven’t yet been felt.
35. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To urge readers to focus on polar bears.
B. To make readers reflect on ecotourism.
C. To stress negative effects that ecotourism has caused.
D. To analyse the reason why the polar bear was killed.
