Being in another country makes you miss all the things you love about your home. For me,
reading books helps me to connect with my memories, my friends and family, and my home
country, the UK. Here are just four of them:
Daddy-long-legs by Jean Webster
This book takes the form of a series of letters, and follows the story of a young orphan, Judy,
as she goes to university and discovers a whole world of new experiences. This book always makes
me remember my home and my mother, because she used to read it to me when I was ill in bed.
Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
Harry James Potter is the title character of J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter fantasy series. The
books cover seven years in the life of the lonely orphan who, on his 11th birthday, learns he is a
wizard. He meets with all sorts of adventures at a wizarding school. I love to read these books again
and again, because I can really get lost in the magical world the author has created. Recently, I have
also been reading them in German.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
This is a science fiction novel about a man’s adventures in space after the end of Earth. It has a
sense of humour which is very British. For this reason, it might be difficult for foreigners to
understand, but when I read it I fee a strong connection to my home country.
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Have you ever read a description of a place that made you feel like you were actually there?
For me, this book does exactly that. It is about a young girl who is taken to live in a big house in
Yorkshire, England, and discovers a secret garden.
21. Which book makes the author miss his mother?
A. The Secret Garden. B. Daddy-long-legs.
C. Harry Potter. D. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
22. What attracts the author in Harry Potter?
A. University experiences. B. Adventures in space.
C. The magical world. D. A secret garden.
23. Why is The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy difficult to understand for foreigners?
A. It has many newly-created words.
B. It includes many scientific terms.
C. It has a very British sense of humor.
D. It consists of imaginary stories.

Muskogee, Oklahoma – Sixth-grader Davyon Johnson, age 11, heroically jumped into action
twice in the same day. While at school, Davyon saved his choking classmate by performing the
Heimlich maneuver. Later the same day, he helped rescue an elderly woman from a house fire.
Members of his community have called him a “superhero.”
One day in December when a student used his teeth to remove a water bottle cap. When the
cap was stuck in his throat, the panicked and painful student rushed to the neighboring classroom
where Davyon sat. Davyon, realizing the severity of the situation, immediately sprang into action.
He raced over to the gasping student and quickly performed upward abdominal ( 腹部的) pushes,
known as the Heimlich maneuver, which forced the cap out from the boy’s throat.
Later that day, during his walk home from school, Davyon witnessed a house fire. Scanning
the scene, he noticed an elderly woman using a walker and attempting to escape the flames. He
quickly ran over to offer his assistance. He supported the distressed woman off her porch and
brought her to the safety of her truck while the fire engines raced to the scene. Davyon showed up
just in time, as the fire quickly spread to the front of the house.
Davyon received some well-deserved praise from the community for both of his good deeds.
He was presented with an award for heroism. Davyon’s mother, LaToya Johnson, said she was not
surprised by her son's heroic actions. She noted that he always wanted to follow in his uncle’s
footsteps by becoming an emergency medical technician. Davyon said he was “excited" about
receiving the honors. He views them as one step further in fulfilling his dream of becoming an
EMT and helping others.

Many Shanghai parents are suffering mental pain rather than enjoying pleasant family time
with their children at home taking online classes amid the COVID-19 epidemic. The video of a
mum crying while complaining about her son taking online classes at home has spread rapidly on
Douyin, and gets immediate responses by many local parents, who feel the same. “Once lacking
concentration for a second, my son can no longer keep the pace of the teachers,” the mum said. "I
cannot remind him to concentrate, but witness him sitting in front of the computer, getting totally
confused and then playing with his pens.”
Dr Xie Bin from the Shanghai Mental Health Center says the key anxiety comes from the lack
of security for the future of their children. They are worried their children might lag behind their
peers, which will become a pressure to the children.
“They should firstly adjust their mental conditions to help their children make adjustments and
get through the special period more smoothly and constructively.” Xie said. He suggested parents
guide their children with daily study plans to help them keep pace with the online classes. Parents
can arrange the study room of their children to look like a real classroom and keep some routine
school activities at home, such as the flag-raising ceremony every morning. They should be more
tolerant when children lose concentration or their temper because the children also need time to get
used to the online classes. Parents can also invite children to do sports or housework together to
create a positive and optimistic living and studying atmosphere at home. He reminded parents to
avoid displaying negative or anxious feelings to their children, as well as reduce their interference
(干预), which will help to improve their children's consciousness, focus and efficiency.
“The meaning of parenting is not merely offering a rich and comfortable life for your children,
but to gain the warmth, courage and strength to overcome difficulties and lead them to grow and
make progress,” Xie said.
28. Why does the author mention the video?
A. To describe the anxiety of many Shanghai parents.
B. To introduce the disadvantages of online classes.
C. To show the relationship between parents and children.
D. To present the inconvenience COVID-19 epidemic causes.
29. What does Xie Bin say about parent’s negative feelings?
A. They increase children’s motivation.
B. They have a bad influence on children.
C. They help children make progress.
D. They make their children fall behind.
30. What does Xie Bin advise parents to do?
A. Take online classes together with children.
B. Forbid children from losing concentration.
C. Expose children to their true feelings.
D. Create a positive studying atmosphere.
31. What can we infer about Xie’s opinion on parenting?
A. It’s an enjoyable thing. B. It’s a professional task.
C. It’s a demanding responsibility. D. It’s a technical skill.
D
Nemo's Garden is an underwater farm, located under the sea just off the coast of Italy. It was
created in 2012 by Sergio Gamberini, the founder of the Ocean Reef Group, a diving equipment
firm. One day when he was resting between dives, he came up with the idea of growing basil(紫苏),
a plant used in cooking, under water in ideal growing conditions.
Gamberini and his team started experimenting by sinking transparent biospheres ( 生物圈) 6
meters below the surface of the sea and filling them with water. A few days later he placed a vase
with basil seeds in a biosphere and it sprouted ( 发 芽 ) after only 48 hours. The result of this is
Nemo's Garden, a project that is looking to create sustainable agriculture underwater.
The project was starting to produce herbs, lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, and other fruits and
vegetables when it suffered storm damage in 2019. Then came the coronavirus pandemic and due
to restrictions, the habitat could not be staffed and just recently reopened. Nemo's Gardens project
manager, Gianni Fontanesi, has logged almost a thousand dives to take care of the underwater farm.
He told the news organization that being in the underwatergreenhouse is like being in an inside out
aquarium. “You are the fish looking out into the outside world,” Fontanesi said.
The biosphere system has drawn the attention of researchers and Nemo's Garden has been
rented to explore this unique plant growing method. “Every year, we are discovering new possible
applications for the biospheres,” said Fontanesi. These include eco-tourism, seaweed farming,
sustainable fish farming, and scientific research.
32. What’s the right order of the experiment done by Gamberini’s team?
a. The seeds began to grow.
b. They sank biospheres underwater.
