Mosquitoes (蚊子)can cause us serious diseases. Until now we've used different things to keep them
away. But none of these ways actually protect us for more than 20 minutes! Now there is a new way to
keep mosquitoes away from you ever again without using any chemicals at all.
What is it all about?
It's called the Mosquitron —a new mosquito catcher or killer. It's very easy to control and it can
protect your home from all the mosquitoes!
How does it work?
Instead of trying to keep the mosquitoes away, it attracts them, then catches them and finally kills
them! Basically, it will attract the mosquitoes into the Mosquitron, with a completely harmless UV-PT
producing light. Next to the UV-PT light is a powerful reverse (反向的)fan that sucks (吸)the mosquitoes
through a one-way trapdoor. Once they are trapped in the drying basket« they are dried to death by the fan
in 2 minutes.
How much does it cost?
You'd be surprised to find that you can get it right now for just $89. It might seem expensive at first.
However, when you compare it with other products which need regular, expensive repair and don't work
for more than 10 minutes, it is pretty cheap. In fact, some products using the same UV technology are
priced over $250! to buy a mosquitron?
That's very easy. You can only buy it from the supplier's website.
21.Why should we stay away from mosquitoes?
A. They produce much noise. B. They need a safe environment.
C. They can spread serious diseases. D. They can make dangerous chemicals.
22.How does the Mosquitron clear mosquitoes?
A. By watering them in a basket B. By attracting and killing them.
C.By burying them with hot sand. D. By giving off strong and harmful light.
23.Where can we buy a mosquitron according to the text?
A. On the website. B. In a supermarket.
C. In a restaurant. D.In a computer store.
B
Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? I do, mine. Her name was Mrs. White.
And I remember thinking she must be some older relation of Walt Disney’s Snow White, because she had
the same bright blue eyes, short dark hair, red lips and fair skin.
I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used
to write a lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many
mistakes. But no red corrections. And always a star. Sometimes even a “Good”! Writing in a careless and
messy way would make my heart soar with happiness. But it worried my mother, so one day when she
went in to meet Mrs. White for one of those parent-teacher meetings, she asked her why she didn’t
red-pencil my wrong spellings of words or point out grammatical errors?
And my mother says Mrs. White said—The children are just beginning to get excited about using
words, about forming sentences. I don’t want to kill that passion( 激 情 ) with red ink. Spelling and
grammar can wait. The wonder of words won’t... And maybe she didn’t say it exactly like that. It was a
long time ago. And what my mother gave me was the main idea of what she could remember. I added the
rest. I grew up learning to use words with loving confidence like that.
I realize that if Mrs. White had used her red pencil more precisely(精确地) I probably wouldn’t be
telling you about this now. I look back now and think she must have been a rather good teacher. And
thanks to Mrs. White, I had no worries about writing what I meant even if I couldn’t quite spell it out.
24. What used to make the author’s mother concerned?
A. His poor memory in writing class. B. His terrible relationship with his teacher.
C. His teacher’s not pointing out the mistakes. D. His bad performance in writing.
25. Why did Mrs. White never correct the students’ spelling and grammatical mistakes?
A. Because she was not willing to use a red pencil.
B. Because she thought the mistakes could wait to be corrected.
C. Because she didn’t want to discourage the students.
D. Because she believed children were just starting to use words.
26. Which of the following best describes Mrs. White as a teacher?
A. Inspiring. B. Demanding. C. Precise. D. Humorous.
27. What does the author want to express in the last paragraph?
A. Using a red pencil weakens the writing ability. B. A good teacher influences students a lot.
C. Teachers should also learn from students. D. People who make no mistakes make nothing.
C
English is full of funny expressions that aren’t always understood easily. Idioms are phrases and
sentences that do not mean exactly what they say. Even if you know the meaning of each word, you may
not understand the idiom because you don’t understand the culture behind it. Here are some English
idioms based on animals.
When children jump around and act silly, their parents may tell them to stop “monkeying around”.
To “monkey around” means to do things that are not useful or serious, or to simply waste time.
Many American families have and love pet dogs. But for some unknown reason, Americans use “dog”
in a phrase that means to feel unwell. If you are “as sick as a dog”, you’re really, really sick.
Sometimes you may also hear cats mentioned in conversations, “I told you to keep that secret, but
you have just‘let the cat out of the bag’!” You probably guessed it—that idiom means to reveal a secret
or tell facts that were previously(先前) unknown.
Dogs and cats don’t always get along, but they appear side by side in a commonly used idiom. When
it rains heavily, people might say it’s “raining cats and dogs”.
Heavy rain often ruins people’s plans for outdoor activities. But on a lovely day, you can have a
picnic. If a swarm (一群) of tiny bugs love your food and start to hover (盘旋) around you, it would be
