Knoebels

Knoebels is often an award winner for its attractions, but the food is the real star to many. Knoebels prices everything

as if the clock had stopped in 1982.You won’t believe the cost of many menu items and will feel charged too much at any

theme park that you visit after this one. The park even employs the old-timey ticket system where you pay only for the rides

that you want rather than a general admission price.

Kennywood

Kennywood began as a trolley(无轨电车)park, a place where guests were encouraged to visit trolley lines, even on the

weekend when the services weren’t needed. These social gatherings involved picnics and various forms of entertainment.

Several of the rides today are older than you and possibly even your grandparents.

Luna Park

Luna Park is the home of the Coney Island Cyclone, the greatest roller coaster(过山车)of the early 20th century. You

can take a ride on the same roller coaster from the William Taft administration. While New Yorkers of a certain age know

this place as Astroland, which operated from 1962 through 2008, the present name is fit for its heritage( 遗产 )and

importance in theme park history.

Hersheypark

Hersheypark has a decided candy emphasis, but you’ll find more than just sweets here. Some of the attractions are very

wonderful. Skyrush was one of the first winged coasters on the planet and is still the tallest and fastest ride at the park. In

total, the park has 14 roller coasters,15 water rides, and a bunch of attractions that date back 50 years or more.

Parents may fear that if their high school student isn’t motivated (有动力) to do well in classes, there’s nothing that

will change that. But a new study found that students’ learning motivation often did change and usually for the better.

1,670 students from grades 9 to 11 took part in the study in two school years, during which they completed several

surveys that assessed their motivation. After each survey, the students were placed into six different profiles (档案), from

worst — those who were not motivated at all, to best — those who had an inner desire to learn.

The study found about 67 % students did change their profiles during the two years and there was an overall positive

change in students’ motivation. For example, 8% of the students were in the best profile — autonomously motivated — in

the first year, and that increased to 11.4% in the second year. The worst profile, the not motivated, described 2.8% of the

students in the first year, dropping to 2.1% in the second year.

“The other good news in the study was that if we can find better ways to motivate students, if we can get them in a

better profile, they tend to stay there,” said Kui Xie, lead author of the study and professor of educational studies at the Ohio

State University.

Why did students move in a positive direction? One reason may be simply because they’re a year older and more

mature (成熟).

But the study did find two factors that impacted how likely they were to become more motivated. One was the

previous achievement. Students who had higher grade the first year were more likely to remain in better profiles in the

second year of the study. The other factor was school belongingness, with students who felt they were more a part of their

school in the first year being more likely to move to or stay in a better profile in the second year.

“This may be one area where we can help students become more motivated,” Xie said. “Belongingness is something

schools can change. They can find ways to help students feel like they are part of the school community.”

For 18 years after her retirement, Deng Xiaolan volunteered to teach music in a rural village in Hebei province. Her

inspirational teaching and the enthusiasm and talent of her pupils made the 44 children from Malan village and neighboring

villages in Fuping county sing the Olympic anthem in Greek at the opening ceremony of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics

on Feb 4.

Deng’s involvement with the rural children can be traced back to her parents. Her father Deng Tuo was the publisher of

Jinchaji Daily, a newspaper which was based in Malan village in Fuping county, Hebei province, from 1939 to 1948.

During the Japanese aggression, 19 Malan locals were killed for refusing to divulge information about the newspaper.

Under the influence of her parents, who both had a passion for music, she learned the violin and singing when she was

young. She joined the school band after entering Tsinghua University, and also taught her colleagues to play the violin after

graduation.

In 2003, when Deng Xiaolan returned to the village to remember the persons who were killed by Japanese invaders, a

group of local children also attended the ceremony. She wanted to sing a song together with the children in commemoration

(纪念仪式), but none of the children knew the well-known songs she named.

“If the children couldn’t sing, then they wouldn’t know how to appreciate music. Life would be so pale if it doesn’t

have music,” Deng said. “My parents lived and fought here when they were young, and they wanted the locals to live a

happy life. So I thought if I had the chance, I must teach them to sing.”

Deng began to travel between Beijing and the village since 2004 to teach the children music. She collected instruments

and also rebuilt the school houses by raising funds and using her own pension. As the children had no background in music,

she had to teach them basic music theory.

Two years later, she established the Malan Band. Among more than 200 students taught by Deng, many left the

mountainous village to receive university education, some of whom are studying art at university or have entered a career in

art education.
