possible. Come along and join us for some water volleyball -and make friends at the same
time!
Elvers
Everyone who joins our club takes part in lots of races-and loves to win! So we expect
our members to turn up regularly for evening practice-at least three times a week. Come and
try our lovely indoor pool and new high diving board!
Waterworld
Our club provides serious swimming training every weekday evening with progress
certificates as you pass each level. We do lots of swimming and diving competitions, and
we’ll teach you the techniques you need to be a champion!
Mermaid Club
Swim your way from beginner to intermediate(中等程度的) level-and get certificates
for your hard work in our big outdoor pool. Working in small groups, we’ll help you build
your strength, ready for swimming the length of the pool.
Splash
Ready to swim 20 km across the sea? Come and join our advanced swimmers’ club on
Saturdays and find out! You’ll be wel1 looked after, and pool training is also provided to help
keep up your strength and develop a swimming style suitable for open water.
Waves
Our club takes all levels of learner swimmers in our shallow practice pool, and aims to
increase strength and improve technique through different pool games. After 6 pm we can
provide one-to-one teaching if requested.
Seals Group

Vellum(羊皮纸) is the material on which history was written and made. Centuries after
its peak, it is still in production. Vellum is still a healthy industry, says Paul Wright of William
Cowley Parchment Makers in a small workshop. But his company is the last vellum maker left
in Britain. The lack of competition is good for Mr. Wright but bad for the craft.
In the past two years Heritage Crafts, an industry body, has produced lists of 130
critically endangered skills. That might not seem alarming. Heritage Crafts shows Britain is a
nation of heritage lovers-the National Trust, a heritage charity, proudly notes that it has more
members than Costa Rica has people. Britons tend to think of heritage in the
country-house-and-gardens sense: history, served with a helping of high tea. Britain does not
subscribe to UNESCO’s convention on safeguarding immaterial heritage. But Daniel
Carpenter, the head of Heritage Crafts, argues that people as well as fancy houses are an
important “part of our culture”.
Words alone cannot keep crafts alive. Greg Rowland is a wheelwright: he makes and
repairs wooden wheels for various uses. His family have been wheelwrights, on and off, since
1331. Much of his knowledge cannot be reduced to words. “When you are driving a spoke(辐
条) in,” he says, “you know when it’s home because the sound changes slightly.” This can
only be learnt by doing. “You can’t learn a sound from a book.”
Even those deaf to the importance of immaterial heritage might be aware of its
consequences. For many buildings, particularly churches, shortages are pressing. When the
Notre Dame Cathedral Paris burnt down, Paris struggled to find craftspeople to repair it.
If Britain is not to lose other skills, its politicians will have to take action. So far, Mr.
Carpenter says, they have had “very little motivation”. But their interest has been piqued
recently. The Palace of Westminster is being rebuilt and they have struggled to find skilled
workers to restore it. This, says Mr. Carpenter, is drawing their attention to the problem nicely.

Anyone who’s met a cat knows that cats are difficult to keep track of. On nearly a weekly
basis, my own cats disappear somewhere in the house, hiding while I fruitlessly tear the place
apart and ignore the sinking fear that they may have gotten outside. After some period of time,
they just...reappear.
Thanks to a new study published Wednesday in the journal PLOS One, we now know
that our cats likely never have the same worries about us. Cats, the study suggests, are able to
track their owners’ whereabouts, using only the sound of the human voice.
While researchers have long known that cats possess object permanence, or the ability to
recognize the existence of an object even when it is no longer immediately seen, the real-time
“tracking” capabilities shown in this study open up new ways to study cats’ minds.
“Fewer research reports have been made about cats’ mental and behavioral mechanisms
than those about dogs,” Saho Takagi, a doctoral student at Kyoto University and the lead
author of the study, wrote in an email to Inside Science.
In a series of three experiments, Takagi’s team observed how cats placed in a familiar
room responded to a series of sounds played from speakers located both inside and outside of
the room. The first experiment used human voices, the second used the sounds of other cats,
and the third used electronic sounds. Takagi found that while the cats had no strong reaction to
the electronic or cat sounds, hearing an owner’s voice without the owner present in the room
left the cats noticeably confused. The sound of an unfamiliar human’s voice also caused
confusion, though not as much as a cat’s owner did.
Takagi wrote that she was surprised that cats didn’t appear to be tracking the sounds of
other cats.
“It is generally believed that cats are not as interested in their owners as dogs are,”
Takagi wrote, “but it turns out that they were mentally representing the invisible presence of
their owners.”
7. How does the author’s mood change according to paragraph 1?
A. From anxiousness to relief.
B. From loneliness to excitement.
C. From helplessness to craziness.
D. From eagerness to nervousness.
8. What have researchers known about cats for a long time?
A. They may be lacking in object permanence.
B. They possess a more brilliant mind than dogs.
C. They can keep track of something that is out of sight.
D. They have more complex behavioral mechanisms than dogs.
9. Which of the following apparently confused the cats?
A. Electronic sounds. B. A stranger’s voice.
C. Other cats’ sounds. D. Their owners’ voice.
10. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Cats make sense of their surroundings by sight
B. Cats have different communication skills
C. Cats locate their owners through hearing
D. Cats develop a unique relationship with humans

How to boost your confidence as an introvert(内向的人)
As we all know, many introverts struggle with confidence issues. 11 . If you
are an introvert who wants to build up your confidence, take your note of these four tips.
Avoid comparing yourself with others
You need to leave all comparisons behind if you want to build confidence. Comparing
yourself to others is a surefire(万全的) way to stop your progress in its tracks. 12 .
Realise that you are fueled by being alone and understand that there is nothing wrong with
that. The sooner you love who you are, the sooner your confidence will develop.
13
Part of building confidence is how you convey your thoughts, feelings, and ideas to
others. Not everyone will understand the way you express yourself, and that is okay. What is
important is that you put in your best effort to express your ideas. If you need help shaping
your own ideas, getting your thoughts on paper is a great way to do that.
Take small steps
Brainstorm the small things you can do to build your confidence and feel better about
yourself. For instance, you could try to change your vocabulary for a more positive, confident
