The vast Caspian Sea, though sometimes classed as a lake, is the largest landlocked body of
water in the world. The gateway between Europe and Asia, it is bordered by Iran to the south,
Azerbaijan and Russia to the west and Turkmenistan to the east, while Kazakhsta’s Mangystau
region lies to the northeast. Many visitors crowd to Caspian Sea every year to experience its

SAILING
The Caspian Sea is filled with boats, ferries and ships. It is a popular way to travel from other
major port cities such as Baku in Azerbaijan to Aktau, or down the mighty Volga Canal.
Meanwhile, on a smaller scale, boats can be rented from Aktau for a day on the water.
WATERSPORTS
The beaches of Mangystau, lapped by the waters of the Caspian Sea, are the jumping off

The juries (陪审团) entered.
I stood beside the lawyer and my brother, Jimmy. It reminded me of our childhood—as things
often did—when we played the game “Simon Says”, we would react at the same time in harmony
when hearing all kinds of order. “Simon says jump; Simon says touch your toes”—it was almost
the same. Almost.
When we grew up, my brother had chosen a separate life, leaving me alone. I missed him a lot.
Today, though, we were together, standing in court, waiting for the sentence.
The guilty verdict ()was read. I sat down, but my brother cried, “No! I'm innocent.” And
then he turned to me, yelling, “How can you do this to me, James! I finally can make a new life by
myself.”
“Stop this,” the judge yelled, “the juries have made the decision.”
“But it's not fair!” my brother replied, “I didn’t kill anyone.
I wished I could explain, but I said nothing because this is the only way we can be together
again.
The judge pulled his glasses from his face. “By law...”
“The law is unjust,” my brother said.
The judge wiped his eyes, and, to my surprise, said calmly. “Yes,” he nodded his glasses
aside. “I agree with you about that. Law is meant to protect the innocent. And you certainly seem
innocent. But how can I tell? You two are clones. Your faces, your fingerprints, even your DNA
match exactly. That’s why when one is found guilty, all others…”
The judge sighed, replaced his glasses, and banged the hammer. “I sentence you both to
twenty years.”
Together, the court guard led us away. My brothers head bowed in defeat, but I walked
upright, for I would no longer be alone.
4. How did James think of their childhood?
A. He felt sorry for Jimmy. B. He had been in court before.

We regularly hear how important consumer spending is for the economy. The story goes like
this: the more consumers spendthe more money circulates in the economy, which contributes to
healthy job growth and profits. Keynes, a British economist went as far as to say that individuals
saving their money may actually be hurting the economy. Sounds troubling, doesn’t it?
Fear not. You aren’t actually hurting anyone else by saving money. Strong economic growth
only comes from one placesavings. Not consumption. In fact, economic activity should not be
mistaken for economic growth. For example, somebody takes their money, walks into a store, and
purchases goods. The store increases its revenue.
But what happens to all of those goods and services that people have chosen not to consume
by saving their money? Simple: Other people are allowed to consume them. Think of it this way:
When you lend out your savings, you are actually saying, “Here, I am not going to consume right
now, so why don’t you?” Banks simply play the middleman: they collect lots of people’s savings
and then lend out lots of funds.
It takes an unbelievable amount of goods and services to construct a building. It takes food,
shelter, and entertainment for all of the workers, as well. Without savings, it is quite impossible to
finance such a construction. The coordination ( 协 调 ) between savings and consumption is a
necessary basis for sound economic growth. This coordination is also why consumer lending (say,
to borrow a big sum of money to buy a car) is not productivein a strict sense. It doesn’t increase
the net () amount of wealth of an economy. Those savings could have been used to construct,
say, factory equipment.
None of this means consumption and spending are “bad” things. They simply do not make us
wealthier. After all, the final goal of production and savings is to consume. But to say that
consumption is the engine of economic growth is to put the cart before the horse. Or, to rephrase:
the consumption of wealth can never make you wealthier. Happier, perhaps. Wealthier, no.
8. What is the authors attitude towards Keynes’ theory?
A. Approving. B. Reserved . C. Uncertain. D. Critical.
9. The underlined word “revenue” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “_______”.
A. income B. reputation C. interest D. cost
10. According to the author, which chart could show the effect of savings on economy?
11. What would be the best title for this passage?
A. The Saving Behavior of the Economy
B. Consumption: A Key Concept in Economy
C. The Truth about Savings and Consumption
D. Consumer Spending and Economic Growth
D
Do you still remember the scene in the famous movie Titanic, directed by Cameron, where
Jack was frozen to death in the icy cold water so that Rose could survive on the floating door
alone? It broke many people’s heart.
Two decades later, people are still asking the question, “wasn’t there enough room on the
