Cheap Travel
You can pay a lot of money to travel around the world. Or you can pay nothing at all. Here
are some places you’ll never regret visiting. They won’t cost you a coin.
The British Museum, London (UK)
You need to go here to see the Egyptian mummies (), the ancient Greek statues and
so many other treasures. It’s open every day, and unlike most other places of interest in England
that cost an arm and a leg, it’s totally free.
National Mall, Washington D.C. (USA)
You can walk a pathway from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument with
other sights in between. Do you know you can go up in the lift to the top of the Washington
Monument? Tickets are free, but pay a small fee to book them in advance to avoid being
disappointed.
National Museum of Ireland, Dublin and Mayo (Ireland)
Want to see Viking artworks and learn about Irish country life? All four branches of this
museum are free to visit, including museums devoted to archaeology, natural history, decorative
arts & history and country life. The museum of country life in Turlough Park, Mayo, is devoted
to Irish countryside traditions, while the Natural History Museum is especially famous for its
collection of insects.

I was now, in the months of November and December, expecting my crop of corn. On a
sudden, I found I was in danger of losing it all by enemies of several sorts. It was hardly possible
to keep away from them. The goats and the hares which I called enemies, tasting the sweetness of
the leaf, lay in it day and night. As soon as it came up, they ate it so close that it could get no time
to shoot up into stem.
I could do nothing but make a fence around it, which I did with a great deal of work because
it required speed. However, as my land was small, suited to my crop, I got it totally well fenced
in about three weeks’ time. Shooting some of the animals in the daytime, I set my dog to guard it
at night, tying him up to a post at the gate, where he would stand and bark all night long. So in a
little time the enemies gave up and left the place, and the corn grew very strong and well.
But as the animals damaged it before, while my corn was in the leaf, the birds were likely to
harm it now. Going along by the place to see how it grew, I saw my little crop filled with fowls,
who stood, watching till I should be gone. I immediately let fly among them, for I always had my
gun with me. I had no sooner shot than there rose up a little cloud of birds, which I had not seen
at all, from among the corn itself.
14. Why were the goats and hares called enemies?
A. Because they woke him up at night without a break.
B. Because they damaged the fence over and over again.
C. Because they often came to feed on the young corn.
D. Because they always kept him away from the field.
15. How was the corn protected at night?
