We were seven hours past sun-up, but you never would have known that on Thursday afternoon as
the roosters - adult male chickens - began to crow. The noise started just after 2 p.m. and by the time it
stopped, the dozen or so roosters would stretch open their mouths, extend their necks and cry out more
than 100 times collectively in this event, which is one of the oldest contests at the Kentucky State Fair.
Kentuckians, young and old, bring their roosters to the fair to see who can crow the most in a 15-minute
stretch. The winning rooster's owner takes home a bag of chicken feed.
It was about half an hour until the crow-off began when I settled into a seat across from a small stage
full of cages. That's where I met John Ball, the fair's crowing organizer, who talked excitedly about the
whole affair to come. The only real rules are you have to bring a rooster and that you can't egg it on
during its 15 minutes in the spotlight,” he said.
I wondered how a rooster was trained to crow in the afternoon, and fortunately, nine-year-old Ben
Miller had some insight to share. When I introduced myself to him, he was already covering his rooster's
eyes gently with his hand. Now, it thinks it's dark, Ben told me. Part of the trick was to make his
rooster believe the sun hadn't risen yet. That way, it would be ready to cry out as soon as it saw the light.
As I looked around, I saw that a few other roosters had joined us. One by one they were placed in the
cages in front of the audience. The crowing continued for the full 15 minutes. After Ball's timer went off,
Sam Lamb15, and his rooster won the contest. It'd crowed 37 times, just a little more than half of the 67
crows from a few years before.
24. What can we say about the contest?
A. It centers around six roosters. B. It lasts for a total of half an hour.
C. It is organized on a weekend afternoon. D. It is a tradition at the Kentucky State Fair.
25. What did John mean by saying “you can't egg it on”in paragraph 2?
A. You can't leave it on an egg. B. You can't motivate it to crow.
D. You can't stop it from crowing. D. You can't interrupt it with an egg.
26. What was Ben's trick with his rooster?
A. He made it confused about the time. B. He showed it some chicken feed.
C. He trained it to react to the timer. D. He left it alone in a dark room.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The science behind rooster crowing B. The history of the Kentucky State Fair
C. An occasion where roosters take center stage D. A day when John Ball shows up in a contest.

Over the past few yearsa new street art form in Sweden has been opening our eyes to a world we
had not given much thought to before.A collection of artists installed tiny buildings, stores and cafes

The scenes like the fairy tales that inspired them

to create something on their own street ” Jim Hanks said.“We like to imagine a world where small
animals live parallel to usand recycle objects we lose or throw awayso a bottle cap becomes a chair
a box of matches becomes a tablea stamp becomes a painting and a trash can becomes a restaurant.”

Researchers have observed Florida carpenter ants biting off the injured legs of their companions.
These surgeries are the first known example of non-human animals performing amputations
肢)to improve a fellow animal's chances of recovering, the researchers say. Not only can they do
this, but they are even able to check the wounds and, depending on the location, adapt the treatment
accordingly, says Erik Frank,an ant researcher. The ants are territorial(有领土意识的)and might
sustain injuries while defending their homes. So, the researchers wondered if the species had methods
for dealing with infected wounds.
They discovered that when a worker ant injured its leg's upper part, companions would perform
amputations. These other ants would then spend about six minutes on average biting at the upper part
until it came off. “I find it striking to what extent they take concerted(同心协力的)action in this
amputation event,” Frank says. “You can see it presenting the injured leg, and the other ant, for many
minutes at a time, is biting it violently and the injured ant doesn't seem to complain.”
The researchers wondered if the amputations could serve to prevent infections. To test this, they
wounded some ants’ legs. They isolated ( 隔 离 ) some, ensuring they would receive no care
performed their own amputations on others and returned a third group to the colony. The experiments
showed ants with upper-leg injuries that were isolated died about 60% of the time, while ants that
received surgeries, either from the researchers or from fellow ants, almost always lived. The
experiments also confirmed the ants didn't perform amputations for those with lower-leg injuries. But
the others would lick(舔舐)the wounds. They had an approximately 75% survival rate, compared to
a 15% survival rate for isolated ants with lower-leg injuries.
Florida carpenter ants have muscles responsible for blood circulation in their upper legs, so
upper-leg injuries could reduce circulation. Lower circulation would, in turn, reduce the spread of
infection, buying the ants time to perform amputations. The researchers found amputations for
lower-leg wounds only improved survival chances if they were performed immediately. The ants
don't perform blanket amputation on any injury-they only do so when it’d make sense.
32. Why do the ants bite off the injured legs of their companions?
A. To save their lives.
B. To compete for territory.
C. To check their injuries.
D. To force them to work.
33. What's Frank's opinion about the injured ants receiving an amputation?
A. They're unwilling.
B. They know nothing about it.
C. They enjoy it so much.
D. They're cooperative.
34. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about concerning the amputation?
A. Different roles ants play in it.
C. The various death rates it causes.
35. What can be inferred about the ants' amputations to their companions?
A. They often fail to achieve their goals.
B. They amputate the lower part of the leg.
C. They perform them with strong targeting.
D. They often injure themselves while doing so.
第二节(共 5小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
You've likely heard that extroverts (性格外向者)gain energy from being around others, while
introverts recharge by being alone. 36 ? The truth is, we all exist on a spectrum (范围)between
introversion and extroversion - no one is completely one or the other.
Extroversion, one of theBig Fivepersonality traits, has a genetic basis, but people can show both
extroverted and introverted behaviors depending on the situation. Studies show that even extroverts can
feel exhausted after socializing. 37 It's just that the upper limit will vary from person to person.
38 . Long, difficult, or intense conversations tend to be more tiring. If you're trying hard to
make a good impression or meeting lots of new people, you're more likely to feel worn out afterward.
39 . So, you can try reducing the exhaustion from socializing by seeking interactions that make
you feel comfortable, avoiding too many new people at once, or taking breaks during long conversations.
Additionally, if you spend a lot of time hiding your true feelings during social events, you might be more
likely to experience emotional exhaustion or burnout. For example, service with a smilejobs could
make servers more tired. Similarly, caregivers who can't express their grief or fear may feel emotionally
spent outside of work. 40 . This can help lessen inner struggles and conflicts.
A. Conflict and complaints also take more energy
B. Everyone will feel tired after a lot of socializing
C. But does that mean extroverts never get tired of socializing
D. However, introverts may never reach this point of exhaustion
E. Is this why extroverts are always more successful in social situations
F. To manage this, it's vital to make time to share your emotions and accept them as real
G. Research has found that certain social interactions are more exhausting than others
