Four Remarkable Hotels in Rome
Maalot Roma
Maalot Roma is a new five-star hotel that draws a young, wealthy crowd looking for colorful,
individually-designed rooms decorated with modern artworks and flea market finds. It is a refreshing
change of pace from the faded hotels in Rome’s historical Trevi district. The area is a must-see, with its mix
of monuments and amazing sights, including the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon (a temple), and Piazza
Navona (a square).
The St. Regis Rome
First opened in 1894, the hotel offers accommodation with 161 rooms and is well-known for reliable
service and professional staff members. Luxury suites (套房) feature a variety of original artworks from the
private collections of important contemporary artists, including Luca Pignatelli, Ubaldo Bartolini, and Paolo
Fiorentino.
Rocco Forte House
Built on Rocco Forte’s rich Italian tradition, it’s well-known as the best hotel in Rome. Film stars and
musicians tend to book here, drawn by its privacy, location and luxurious rooms. Rocco Forte House is your
private hiding place in an 18th century palace overlooking Piazza di Spagna (a square). There are just five
apartments, with two bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room and a dining area — plus a shared rooftop area
with the best views in the city.
Generator Rome
Only 10 minutes from Rome’s Termini Rail Station, Generator attracts a good mixture of those
wanting to cut down expenses and those arriving at the city at unreasonable hours. We’re talking about
students and backpackers and businessmen crashing out before an early train of the next day. The
atmosphere is relaxed, fun, and friendly.

A.Historical and famous hotels. B.Artists’ preferred hotels.

Rome.

Our planet is losing species at an alarming rate. As the world has become increasingly industrialized,
natural habitats have been destroyed to build cities that are unlivable for wildlife. However, a pair of
European designers, architect Rene Hougaard and product designer Alexander Qual, believe there are ways
to encourage cities to coexist with nature. Inspired by everyday people who build “insect hotels“ in their
backyards, they’ve created outdoor furniture that would be beautiful to look at, but also allow bugs, birds
and wildflowers to thrive (繁殖).
The natural world tends to appear messy and chaotic to the human eye, but there is often method in
the madness. Qual and Hougaard kept this in mind as in all the structures, they played with the concepts of
order and messiness.
Qual created a large, yellow, leaf-shaped insect hotel, that’s designed to be placed on a flower bed in a
park. The structure contains wooden blocks with holes that are 6, 7 and 8 millimeters in diameter (直径),
since different insect species prefer holes of different sizes.
Hougaard created a metal log bench with an empty space in the middle specifically designed to hold a
decaying (腐烂的) log that can provide a habitat for insects and plants, along with birds and bats. While
humans often shun decay, Hougaard imagines a place where people can sit down and observe the slow
process in which bacteria break down the wood, creating food for insects, birds and other animals.
As for the question of whether people actually want to be so close to bugs, snakes and nesting birds,
the designers acknowledge that modern humans have been trained to stay away from such creatures. But
Hougaard says these structures keep animals contained, while allowing people to observe and appreciate
them safely. And eventually, if we want to maintain biodiversity, humans need to become much more
comfortable living alongside wildlife, rather than feeling the need to destroy it. After all, we humans need
nature to survive.
24.Why did Hougaard and Qual build insect hotels?
A.To inspire more people to build one. B.To bring biodiversity back to cities.
C.To provide a way to manage the city. D.To slow down the process of industrialization.
25.What did Hougaard and Qual mainly consider in designing their structures?
A.The size of species. B.The variety of colors.
C.The building materials. D.The combination of order and disorder.
26.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “shun” in Para.4?
A.Avoided. B.Crealed.
C.Observed. D.Provided.
27.What can be concluded from the last paragraph?
A.Bugs and snakes annoy people a lot.
B.Modern people have destroyed some creatures.
C.People should protect wildlife for our own good.
D.Hougaard’s structures enable people to touch the animals.
C
Every day, little Laika searched for food and shelter through the streets and markets. One day, a man
was approaching her and held out some food in one hand. Laika sniffed (闻) and slowly crept (爬) towards
the treat. Whoosh! Laika was caught in the dogcatcher’s net. She struggled to get free but it was no use. The
scientists needed homeless dogs for some tests.
Life in the laboratory was difficult. Machine after machine, the scientists tested how Laika would
handle the situation. The scientists liked Laika as she always stayed calm and did whatever they asked her
to. Soon, Laika became one of the three dogs considered for a special mission in space. A rocket would be
launched in less than a month and there would be a dog on board. No person or animal had been to outer
space. Vets and scientists were unsure if it was safe. Dr. Vladimir Yazdovsky recalled that before heading to
the launch pad, he took the dog home to play with his children. “I wanted to do something nice for her. I
was afraid she had little time left to live.”
In October 1957, the rocket was ready. A special space suit was made just for Laika. The scientists
said a teary goodbye and wished Laika good luck. Then, they put her in a tiny cabin in the rocket that was
specially set up for her. Soon the engines roared to life. The noise was deafening and Laika’s heart pounded.
However, there was no turning back.
A small crowd watched as the gleaming rocket sped up through the sky and out of sight. People across
the country cheered for the world’s first true astronaut who carried on such a difficult and dangerous job.
This tiny hero paved the way for many human astronauts to come. After a few other flights with dogs, the
Soviet Union put the world’s first human—Yuri Gagarin—into space on April 12, 1961.
28.What can be inferred about Laika?
A.She wasn’t ready to go with the dogcatcher.
B.She wasn’t used to the life in the laboratory.
C.She had been taken good care of by its owner.
D.She didn’t get along well with the scientists.
29.Why did the man catch Laika?
A.He wanted to give her some food. B.She was needed to play with children.
C.He wanted to keep her as a pet. D.She was needed for scientific tests.
30.Why did the scientists say a teary goodbye to Laika?
A.They felt sorry for their strict training. B.The loud noise would make her deaf.
C.She probably wouldn’t come back alive. D.She would suffer heat problems in the rocket.
31.In what way was Laika’s role in space tasks important?
A.She was small enough for the space task. B.She could get used to noisy environment.
C.She helped to make human space tasks possible. D.She was able to continue living in the space
task.

China’s three major mobile operators (运营商) on Thursday started their long-awaited 5G service
plans with users in dozens of cities. China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom announced their
monthly 5G plans with prices ranging from 128 yuan to 599 yuan, almost at the same time.
The 5G services are now being used in 50 cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and
Shenzhen. The expectation for the new communication technology has long been high. The three major
mobile operators already registered (注册) over 10 million 5G users before the official start.
The country is expected to have over 600 million 5G users by 2025, covering nearly 40 percent of the
global total. Major phone makers are jumping on the broadband (宽带) business. Eighteen types of 5G
smartphones were brought out in the first three quarters of this year, and about 787, 000 5G phones came
into the market, according to a research institute with the Ministry of Industry and Information
Technology(MIIT).
Bloomberg News reported that bringing 5G services out to the world’s biggest population should give
a push to China’s digital economy, including makers of telecommunications equipment, platforms and
applications for the internet of things, autonomous (自动的) driving and factory automation. It will be
expensive at first but could pay off well into the future.
China is ready to become the world’s largest 5G market by users, a position that could help it set
global standards (标准) for such networks and inspire its drive to become a leader in this field.
32.What can you infer from paragraph 3?
A.There will be 600 million 5G users by 2025.
B.People have accepted 5G services as part of their life.
C.Phone market becomes active thanks to 5G services.
D.The new technology has long been highly expected.
33.How will 5G services change China according to Bloomberg?
A.China can hardly benefit from developing this technology.
B.It will be expensive to develop this advanced technology.
C.The technology helps set the world standards for network.
D.It will lead to China’s economic development.
34.What’s the writer’s attitude to the future of 5G services in China?
A.Worried. B.Negative. C.Positive. D.Unclear.
35.What could be the best title for the text?
A.5G Services Already Widely Used.
B.Three Major Mobile Operators.
