My teacher held up a piece of broken glass and asked, “Who broke this window?” Thirty boys tried to think
about not only what they had done, but also what our teacher might have found out. She seldom became angry, but
she was this time.
“Oh,” I thought. I was the one who broke the window. It was caused by a naughty throw of a baseball. If I
admitted guilt, I would be in a lot of trouble. How would I be able to pay for a big window like that? I didn’t even
get an allowance(零花钱). “My father is going to have a temper,” I thought. I didn’t want to raise my hand, but
some force much stronger than I pulled it skyward. I told the truth, “I did it.” It was hard enough to say what I had
done.
My teacher took down a book from one of our library shelves and I had never known my teacher who
would strike a student with it, but I feared she was going to start with me.
“I know how you like birds,” she said as she stood looking down at my guilt-ridden(深感歉疚的)face. “Here
is that field guide about birds that you are constantly checking out. It is yours now. It’s time that we got a new one
for the school any way. You will not be punished as long as you remember that I am not rewarding you for your
misdeed; I am rewarding you for your truthfulness.”
I couldn’t believe it! I wasn’t being punished and I was getting my own bird field guide—the very one that I
had been saving up money to buy.
All that remains of that day is my memory and the lesson my teacher taught me. That lesson stays with me
every day, and it will echo(回响)forever.

Many kids help out around the house with chores (家庭杂务) such as emptying a dishwasher, putting dry
clothes away, and taking out trash. In exchange, some kids get allowances or other rewards such as extra computer
time.
But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. Susie Walton, a parenting
educator and family coach, believes that by rewarding kids, parents are sending a message that work isn’t worth
doing unless they get something in return. “Running any kind of household is a team effort,” Susie said. “A home
is a living space for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that they all have responsibilities in the
house, and that a family decides together how they want their home to look, and how they are going to keep it
looking like everyone wants it to look.”
Other people believe that getting a cash allowance or other rewards encourages kids to do chores, and it also
teaches them real-world lessons about how we need to work to earn money. There are also new applications that
give kids points and digital gifts that can be redeemed (兑取) either online or in the real world. With the
ChoreMonster app, kids earn digital points by completing chores that they can turn in (提交) for real-life rewards
such as extra Xbox time or a trip to the mall. “Our goal is to encourage kids to earn rewards,” says Chris Bergman,
founder of ChoreMonster, “Kids need positive reinforcement (强化) to help encourage them to do so.”
What do you think? Should kids be rewarded for doing chores? Or should kids help out around their homes
without getting anything in return? Write a 200-word response. Send it to tfkasks4you@time forkids.com. Your
response may be published in a future issue of Time For Kids. Please include your grade and contact information
of your parent or teacher if you want your response to be published. The deadline for responding is February 18.

I used to hate being called upon in class mainly because I didn’t like attention drawn to myself. And unless
assigned (指定) a seat by the teacher, I always chose to sit at the back of the classroom.
All this changed after I joined a sports team. It began when a teacher suggested I try out for the basketball
team. At first I thought it was a crazy idea because I didn’t have a good sense of balance, nor did I have the ability
to keep pace with the others on the team and they would laugh at me. But for the teacher who kept insisting on my
“going for it”, I wouldn’t have decided to give a try.
Getting up the courage to go to the tryouts (选拔赛) was only the half of it! Luckily, I passed them. When I
first started attending the practice sessions, I didn’t even know the rules of the game, much less what I was doing.
Sometimes I’d get confused and take a shot at the wrong direction—which made me feel really stupid. Thank
God, I wasn’t the only one “new” at the game, so I decided to focus on learning the game, do my best at each
practice session, and not be too hard on myself for the things I didn’t know “just yet”.
I practiced and practiced. Soon I knew the rules and the “moves”. Being part of a team was fun and
encouraging.
Very soon the competitive part in me was winning over my lack of confidence. With time, I learned how to play
and made friends in the progress—friends who respected my efforts to work hard and be a team player. I never
had so much fun!
With my improved self-confidence comes more praise from teachers and classmates. I have gone from
“hiding” in the back of the classroom and not wanting to call attention to myself, to raising my hand—even when I
sometimes wasn’t and not 100 percent sure I had the right answer. Now, I have more self-confidence in myself.
Every time I come across a challenge, my teacher’s “going for it” rings in my ears.
9. What made the author decide to join a basketball team?
A. His teacher’s encouragement. B. His determination to change.
C. His desire to show himself off. D. His love for team cooperation.
10. Before attending the practice sessions, players must ______.
A. pass the tryouts B. know what they will do
C. have enough courage D. learn the rules in advance
11. From the last paragraph, what has happened to the boy?
A. He has got more praise and become overconfident.
B. He has continued to sit in the back of the classroom.
C. He is willing to answer questions in class now.
D. He focuses more on study rather than basketball
12. What does the author want to tell us in the passage?
A. Team spirit can teach us a lot. B. Practice makes perfect.
C. Go for it, and we will make it. D. Desire to compete does matter.

Fiji has become the first country in the Pacific to recognize“waste pickers”,who collect, repurpose and sell
rubbish, as environmental champions.
Who are “waste pickers”? These workers are usually women, children and migrants(移民)living in bad
conditions. The job comes with many health risks, as workers are exposed to pollutants and poisonous
materials, and those who work at open dumps(垃圾场)face risks caused by trucks, fires and surface falls.
They remove millions of tons of CO each year from landfills, yet they are often looked down on and treated
poorly. Talking to ABC News, Tikitoro from Fiji said that her children are made fun of at school. “The students
laugh and point at them” she shared.
How is Fiji responding? On July 20, 2022, in Lautoka, Fiji recognized the environmental benefits that these
