Special Treats for Tourists Who Act Sustainably in Copenhagen
Tourists in Copenhagen will receive free coffees, glasses of wine and boat trips if they join in environmentally
friendly tasks during their holiday according to a new local plan. From July 15, tourists who pick up litter, use
public transport or bicycle around the city will be given special treats as part of efforts to offset（抵消）their
impact on the environment.
The CopenPay plan, designed to relieve the environmental “burden” of tourists flying to Copenhagen, is
described as a “little step towards the green transition”. The plan will be trust-based, as the businesses taking part
won’t ask for proof before handing over a free coffee or a meal for the tourists’ self-reported efforts.
“When you travel abroad— if you fly to other places or you travel by car— you pollute,” said Rikke Holm
Petersen, head of the Copenhagen tourism board. “One of the things we can change is getting people to act more
sustainably at the destination.”
More than 20 restaurants, cafes, boat trip organisers and other businesses have signed up for the plan and
voluntarily provide special treats. The tourism board expects tourists from home and abroad, who make about 12
million overnight stays per year in the Danish capital, to take part in the activity.
