Future home technologies you should know in advance
Here are some of the future home technologies that everyone should know about.
Automated Robots
A robot made by scientists in Germany does more than clean the floor. The one-armed, three-fingered
device can pick up items, tidy up, run various machines and even serve drinks to guests.
Lighting Controls
Turning on a light from a wall switch is out of date now. Lights can now be controlled from mobile
equipment, touchscreens or an automated system. NEST, a smart thermostat (恒温器) produced by Google,
can even be programmed to turn on lights in your home and cool the air inside at various times of the day or
night.
Power Tracking or Energy Efficient Tech
Think of an energy system that can tell you when you need to go over your power budget () for the
month. The Total Home Energy Management program created by an American company does just that. It
tracks a home’s energy use and relevant costs. It can even analyze devices in the home and tell owners when
they need to be upgraded to more energy-efficient ones. Besides, it can constantly add new functions and
become a more useful system.
Smart Toilets
There are toilets in Japan that will perform an analysis after people do their business, and then inform
them whether they have diabetes (糖尿病) or are at risk of it. Toilets may soon be able to tell that someone has
colon cancer (结肠).
1. What can the robot do for its owner?
A. Repair machines. B. Clean the house.
C. Cool the air inside. D. Pay electricity bills.
2. What do NEST and Total Home Energy Management have in common?
A. They both are energy-efficient.
B. They both can control the lights.
C. They both are created in the USA.
D. They both can upgrade automatically.
3. Which of the following is a feature of the smart toilets?
A. Disease examination function. B. Touchscreen controlling.
C. Energy-saving performance. D. Intelligent heated seating.

Jane Goodall is a famous animal behaviorist and has spent many years observing the behavior of chimps
in their native habitat.
Jane Goodall was born on April 3rd, 1934 in London, England. Her childhood dream was to spend time
with animals in the wild. In particular, she was drawn to Africa and the dream of seeing wild animals in their
native habitat. It was an unusual dream for a girl at the time, but her parents said to her, “We know it’s
different, but we are at your back.”
In 1956, Jane jumped at the opportunity to travel to a friend’s farm in Kenya. It was there that Jane met
the famous anthropologist, Dr Louis S.B. Leakey. Leakey was impressed with Jane’s passion and knowledge
of Africa and wildlife.
In 1960, Leakey and Jane began an important study of wild chimps by Lake Tanganyika. The chimps
showed some fascinating habits to the group. These included meat eating, which is completely different from
the previous opinion about chimps. Also, Jane saw chimps making tools to catch insects. This was an
important discovery because, at the time, it was assumed only humans made tools.
The study of chimps in their native habitat was a significant event, leading to many new observations.
Jane’s first article My life among wild chimpanzees was published in National Geographic in 1963. Some
aspects of the study were challenged. For example, some feared her decision to feed the animals might have
distorted their behavior and made them more aggressive (好斗的).
In 1977, Jane set up the Jane Goodall Institute which promotes plans to look after chimps and their
environment. The institute has many networks and programs all over the world.
4. How did Jane Goodall’s parents respond to her childhood dream?
A. They supported her. B. They laughed at her.
C. They worried about her. D. They got angry with her.
5. What did people think of chimps previously?
A. Chimps were used to living alone.
B. Chimps were good at making tools.
C. Chimps were thought not to eat meat.
D. Chimps liked eating insects very much.
6. What does the underlined word “distorted” in the last but one paragraph mean?
A. Affected. B. Trained.
C. Protected. D. Controlled.
7. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The secrets of chimpanzees
B. The mysteries of African land
C. Jane Goodall — a friend of the wild world
D. Jane Goodall — a woman living with chimps

According to a recent report published in Nature, the threats tigers face are habitat loss, illegal hunting,
{#{QQABLQQEggAIAAIAAQhCAw0SCgEQkBGAAAoOxAAMsAAAQANABAA=}#}
and above all, the widening of transportation networks.
Different from other threats, the threat caused by transportation networks has been poorly studied, but the
few studies that exist show strong effects. In Russia, vehicle accidents caused one in every 12 deaths of tigers
from 1992 to 2005. In India, one study assumed that widening highways would increase tiger extinction risk
by 56 percent over 100 years. The growing networks of transportation could therefore be a serious disaster
for tigers.
In Nepal, GPS collars (项圈) are reported to be placed on tigers living near roads to better understand the
influence of transportation. By using modern tracking technology, the collars connect to GPS satellites,
providing detailed information on tiger locations. The data shows how tigers move before and after crossing
the road, where and how they hunt near roads, how they respond to vehicle traffic at different times of the
day, and what their behavior patterns are near roads as compared with far away from roads.
With these findings, we can predict () a range of impacts on tiger habitat and population from new
transportation projects. We can rebuild tiger habitat in areas that are important to tiger reproduction ().
Planners can design and locate wildlife crossings to help tigers cross roads and railways. And we can put up
speed limit signs to reduce the risk of tigers being killed in traffic.
Over time, this technology will provide solutions that can ensure roads work for humans while reducing
damage to tigers and other species at risk.
8 What is the report published in Nature probably about?
A. The loss of tiger habitat.
B. Human-animal relationships.
C. Threats to the survival of tigers.
D. Impacts of transportation networks.
9. How does the author illustrate the effects of transportation networks on tigers?
A. By telling a story. B. By giving examples.
C. By quoting from experts. D. By making a comparison.
10. What is the function of a GPS collar?
A. It keeps a record of tigers’ movement.
B. It improves tigers’ behavior patterns.
C. It provides information for drivers.
D. It guides tigers through the road safely.
11. Where is the text most likely from?
A. A diary. B. A guidebook.
C. A novel. D. A magazine.

I read Newport’s book, Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World, which he
published in 2016. In this book, Newport makes the persuasive argument that highly focused work is
increasingly not common in the modern workplace.
People are easy to get distracted (分心), whether they’re surfing the Internet for entertainment or wasting
time on tasks like email and meetings. However, those who are able to push their cognitive (认知的) abilities
to the limit can create new value and improve their skills. In other words, training one’s mind to focus on
deep work not only makes one efficient and produces valuable work, but it also secures one’s place in a
quickly changing economy.
Part I of Newport’s book explains the importance of deep work. Part II explores the process of how to
develop such a practice in one’s own life by following four rules: (1) Work deeply; (2) Accept boredom; (3)
Quit social media; (4) Remove shallow things.
Newport praises the importance of daily laziness in this book, writing, “Add regular and great freedom
from professional concerns into your day, providing you with the idleness () required to get deep work
done.” He advises doing this by shutting everything down at the end of the workday.
Deep Work is packed with useful tips and tools for making meaningful changes. Since picking up the
book several weeks ago, I’ve been using bits and pieces of the philosophy, such as leaving my phone on
silent all day long and checking it only at predetermined times, and not allowing myself to look things up
online until I’ve finished writing an article. Now I’m able to start additional projects that I’ve been wanting to
do but haven’t felt like I had the time before.
12. Which of the following is a benefit of deep work?
A. Avoiding boredom.
B. Increasing job security.
C. Keeping away from social media.
D. Adapting to new changes quickly.
13. What is stressed in this book according to Paragraph 4?
A. The significance of relaxing.B. Ways of reducing concerns.
C. The advice on deep work. D. Benefits of being lazy.
14. What can we learn from the story in the last paragraph?
A. Interest is the best teacher.
B. The old methods still work today.
C. It is difficult to put theory into practice.
D. Concentration helps improve work efficiency.
15. What’s the text mainly about?
A. A life experience. B. A best-selling writer.
C. An introduction to a book. D. A study on concentration.

There are billions of books in the world and the number is still growing. With so many choices, selecting
the right book to read could be difficult. 16 That’s fine for the purpose of having fun, but not good for
your development. Here are some tips for choosing a good book wisely.
Check out the reviews online. You can find reviews written from several angles (). No matter good
or bad, they are useful to a certain extent. 17
Know when to make a change. We tend to read a lot of similar books with a recurring theme (
的主题). 18 Keep your mind fresh and choose books in different directions to read.
Ask for recommendations from like-minded people and your role models. 19 They won’t try to sell
you books on the best-seller list like marketers. They know your interest and personality, so they’d have a good
