Jesse Kata, the 26-year-old American traveler, arrived in Peru last March, ready to visit Machu Picchu. It was supposed
to be the final stop on his around-the-world trip, but then lockdown struck Peru on March16, the day Kata was supposed to
start hiking.
He decided to hang around for a few weeks in the hope that it would reopen. He considered some of the emergency
evacuation flights back home to America, but found them to be very expensive. Days turned into weeks, then months, and
still Kata waited.
He made the best of his time. He rented a small apartment in the town and passed the time taking daily yoga classes,
teaching local children how to box, and studying for various fitness and sports nutrition certification exams. He was working
towards his goal of opening his own gym back home in America.
Finally, after earning the nickname “the last tourist in Peru”, Kata’s patience paid off. On October 11, he derived special
access to Machu Picchu and allowed to enter the ancient site with the country’s culture minister, Alejandro Neyra, and a
handful of guides.
It’s an example of slow travel — travel so slow, in fact, that Kata didn’t even go anywhere except to the village at the
foot of the Andean Mountains. Rather than rush off on an emergency flight, Kata accepted that sudden slow pace of life and
made the best of it, simply fitting into the local community and putting in time. He must have gotten to know Peruvian
village life better than he ever imagined-and gained so much more in the process than if he’d taken the quick and easy route
home.

The first time that I met a blind scientist. I worked in a program for disabled students interested in pursuing STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) research. Until that point, it had never occurred to me how blind students were
prevented from receiving science education. My daily experience in classrooms consisted of professors drawing and writing
on the board with the assumption that students in the class could see. But what about those students who cannot see or suffer
from vision problems?
A recent paper from Baylor University, led by Katelyn Baumer and Bryan Shaw, was inspired by exactly this
problem.They designed a study to assess whether people could learn to recognize 3D models, like those often used to teach
science, with their mouths instead of with their eyes.
A 202l paper in Nature found that primates(灵长类动物)showed the same brain circuit activation(激活)when grasping
objects with their hands and when moving an object with their tongues.This indicates that there may be underlying
similarities of physical manipulations(操纵)of the hand and the mouth.
Baumer and Shaw found that there was comparable touch recognition with hands to mouth manipulation recognition
when using these models. 365 college students and 31 primary school students participated in the study. The participants
were blindfolded and then divided into two groups, one assigned to manipulate objects by hand, and one to manipulate the
objects with only their mouths. Each participant was given a single model protein to study. They then were asked to identify
whether each of a set of eight other protein models matched the original they were given.
The research team saw that both age groups of students were able to successfully distinguish between models.
Moreover, the accuracy of recalling the structures was higher in people who only assessed the models through mouth
manipulation.
Although this study did not involve blind or low-vision students, it sets the basis for expanding into them next. It may
offer a way to have science become more accessible, which is the ultimate goal.

China is one of the first countries to breed a medical culture. In comparison with Western methods, traditional Chinese
medicine (TCM) adopts a vastly different approach. For thousands of years, Chinese people have accumulated rich
experience in fighting all sorts of diseases, therefore forming a unique medical theory under the guidance of ancient Chinese
philosophies (哲学).
The core behind TCM is that the human body's life is the consequence ( 结果) of the balance between Yin and Yang.
Yang functions to safeguard us against outer harm, and Yin is the inner base to store and provide energy. When the balance
between the two aspects is disturbed, people fall ill.
One of the traditional techniques of TCM, acupuncture (针刺疗法) means insertion of needles into superficial (表面的)
structures of the body—usually at acupoints ( 穴 位 )—to restore the Yin Yang balance. It is often accompanied by
moxibustion (艾灸疗法), which involves burning mugwort on or near the skin at an acupoint.
The first known text that clearly talks about something like acupuncture and moxibustion as it is practiced today is The
Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon. It is the earliest and most important written work of TCM and is considered the fundamental
and most representative medical text in China.
Acupuncture and moxibustion have aroused the interest of international medical science circles. And TCM is gradually
gaining worldwide recognition. The WHO issued a document in 2002 that appealed to more than 180 countries to adopt
TCM as an alternative in their medical policies. In 2010, acupuncture and moxibustion of traditional Chinese medicine were
added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO. Presently, TCM has been
back in the news for its effectiveness in improving the cure rate of the COVID-19 since its outbreak in January 2020.
