Unusual Libraries Around the World
There are 2.7 million libraries spreading across the globe, and while there are many beautiful ones, there are also a
number of unique ones.
Haskell Free Library and Opera House, Quebec, Canada and Vermont, US
The Haskell Free Library and Opera House, a special library spanning two countries, is stationed on the border
between Canada and the United States and serves people from both countries. The main entrance is on the American side,
but the majority of collection of the books are in Canada. There’s even an official American-Canada borderline running
right across the library’s floor.
Deichman Bjørvika, Oslo, Norway
Praised by many as a library of the future, the Deichman Bjørvika, city of Oslo’s new main library, has one hundred
unread and unpublished texts. They are stored in a specially designed room lined with wood from the forest, making the
library the world’s most secretive one. It witnesses different authors add their works to the collection that will not be
available for reading until 2114.
Seashore Library, Qinhuangdao, China
Quietly sitting on an isolated () stretch of beach of Qinhuangdao in northern China, the Seashore Library
has been called the world’s loneliest library. People have to walk across the sand to reach the doors. The building is
designed to promote people’s connection with ocean, so the main reading room features a layered design to ensure that
everyone has a good view of the sea.
Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria, Egypt
Bíbliotheca Alexandrina is considered as a revival (复兴) of an ancient library in the Alex-andria 2,300 years ago or
so. Characterized by its circular, tilting form, the building spans 160 meters in diameter ( 直 径 ) and reaches up to 32
meters in height, while also diving some 12 meters into the ground.
21What highlights the Haskell Free Library and Opera House?
AIt crosses two countries.
BIt is accessible only by boat.

A blind Chinese climber reached the summit of Qomolangma, known in the West as Mount Everest, on Monday
morning, becoming the first blind person from Asia ever to conquer the world’s highest summit.
Zhang Hong, 46, reached the top from the Nepali side, along with three high-altitude guides.
Zhang, who was born in Chongqing, lost his sight at the age of 21. He now works at Fukang Hospital Affiliated with
Tibet University in Lhasa. As Zhang began his climb of Qomolangma, which is 8,848.86 meters above sea level, his
colleagues in Lhasa were excited to hear the news of his success.
“Many people may have doubted his attempt of climbing at first, but I was confident in him from the beginning,”
said Kyila, the secretary of the Fukang Angel Foundation, who also is a blind person. “I knew before that he could make
it, and he did make it. I am really happy for him. He is a model for blind people to encourage them to chase their dreams.”
Zhang’s passion for climbing was inspired by Lotse, a famous Tibetan climber who conquered all the world’s 14
summits above the altitude of 8,000 meters. Lotse had shared the story of the blind US mountaineer Erik Weihenmayer,
who climbed Qomolangma in May 2001. Zhang was touched by the story, which ignited his dream of climbing.
As an amateur climber for years, Zhang had conquered three mountains above the altitude of 6,000 meters before
climbing the world’s highest summit. He had begun preparing for the Qomolangma climb in 2019. However, due to the
COVID-19 pandemic, all mountaineering teams on Qomolangma were canceled in Nepal and China last year, and he had
to wait until recently to finally make the attempt.
24What can we infer from what Kyila said?
AHe had been inspired by Lotse.
BHe had much belief in Zhang’s success.
CZhang’s colleagues doubted his motivation.
DZhang centered on climbing in his spare time.
25What does the underlined word “ignited” in paragraph 5 mean?
ALighted. BAccomplished. CFollowed. DRecalled.
26Why did Zhang Hong fail to climb Qomolangma in 2020?
AHe was too weak. BHe wasn’t well prepared.
CA pandemic broke out. DExtreme weather occurred.

Searching Venus’ sky
From the moon to Mars, scientists have been hunting for alien life in the solar system for decades. However, Venus
was not regarded as an ideal place because of its hot temperature and dry atmosphere. But a recent discovery of traces of
a gas in the clouds of Venus has excited astronomers, as it may serve as a potential sign of life.
On Sept 14, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada announced that scientists have detected phosphine()
in the clouds of Venus. Phosphine is a colorless, toxic(有毒)gas that has an odor of garlic. Though toxic, it is viewed as
a possible sign of life because on Earth the gas is made by microorganisms that live in oxygen-free environments.
“I was very surprised - stunned, in fact,” astronomer Jane Greaves of Cardiff University in Wales and lead author of
the research, told MSN. “There is a chance that we have detected some kind of living organism in the clouds of Venus.”
This layer of clouds is about 48 kilometers above the Venus surface, with its temperature ranging from 30 to 200
degrees Fahrenheit (about -1 to 93). Scientists have speculated that if life exists on Venus, this cloud deck(云 盖 )is
likely the only place where it would survive.
Scientists went through every possibility that could have led to the formation of phosphine gas in Venus’ clouds,
including volcanoes, lightning strikes, small meteorites()falling into the atmosphere. But they ruled all of them out.
It was concluded that there is no explanation for the existence of this gas in Venus’ clouds, other than the presence of life.
Although the detection of phosphine is not robust( 强 有 力)evidence for life, this finding is great enough to change
scientists’ view on Venus, which is thought to be a completely inhospitable planet.
What signs of life are we looking for?
Liquid water: It can dissolve a huge range of molecules needed for life and facilitate their chemical reactions.
Mild temperatures: Temperatures higher than 122 will destroy most complex organic molecules, and make it
almost impossible for carbon-based life to form.
28What is the text mainly about?
AA newly detected gas may indicate possible existence of life on Venus.
BScientists found the most hospitable place on Venus.
CThe environment on Venue changed in favor of life.
DPhosphine formed on Venus means alien life is present.
29What can we learn about phosphine from the text?
AIt has no smell at all. BIt only exists on Venus.
CIt can be produced by microorganisms. DIt is a sign of the existence of oxygen.
30What can we infer from paragraphs 5 and 6?
AVarious living organisms have been detected on Venus.
BThe higher the cloud is above Venus, the warmer it is.
CThe cloud deck is rich in phosphine.
DIf life exists on Venus, it is likely in the cloud deck.
31What did scientists conclude about the phosphine gas detected on Venus?
AIt could be formed as a result of the falling of meteorites.
BIt could be a sign that there is life in Venusclouds.
CIt could be caused by volcanoes and lighting strikes.
DIt proves that Venus is another hospitable planet.

Online classes began to be popularized just a few decades ago. They are advertised as a way for adults to finish their
education and students to learn the material at their own paceit is far more suitable for people with busy schedules.
But after being enrolled in an online course last fall semester, I came to realize online classes were merely a means
to fulfil course requirements.
First of all, students lack the desire to learn, and they simply complete their assignments to receive credit for a
passing grade rather than genuinely engage with the course material.
As online courses tend to have more than 100 students, most of the assignments are short and simple. They are not
designed for students to interact with the material in depth but designed to be graded easily to accommodate such a large
number of students.
Perhaps the biggest disadvantage of taking an online class is the absence of face-to-face interaction between the
teacher and their students. Live sessions are infrequent and are often scheduled during the middle of the day when
students have to attend other classes or work. The office hours of the professor may also be during inconvenient times for
many students as well. Most interaction with the professor has to be through email which is often impersonal. It is nearly
impossible for students to build a relationship with their professor.
There is also little interaction among students. It can be harder for students to create study groups and form
relationships with their peers.
Online classes also require either a computer or laptop and a reliable Internet connection. Not all students have
access to these types of resources, whether it is for financial or other reasons, and some students can be put at a
disadvantage. Offering online classes certainly helps students who would otherwise not be able to attend classroom
sessions. However, they fail to provide a true education with an emphasis on convenience rather than critical thinking. We
need restructure online classes in which students can have a learning experience that will actually provide quality
education.
32What can we infer about students enrolled in online classes?
AThey are unmotivated to learn,
BThey can access course materials easily.
CThey rarely fulfil the course requirements.
DThey can learn at their own pace.
33What is the authors opinion about online course assignments?
AThey are meant to facilitate interaction.
BThey are made convenient to mark.
CThey are given to accommodate students’ needs.
DThey are based on easily accessible material.
34From the passage, which is one disadvantage of online classes?
AThey make professors’ offices much less accessible.
BThey are frequently scheduled at irregular times.
CThey provide little chance for students to build relationships with each other.
DThey tend to increase professors’ burden of replying students’ emails.
35What problem may arise if classes go online?
ATeachers will worry about poor Internet connections.
BMost students may get critical thinking skills from it.
CSchools with limited resources will be at a disadvantage.
DSome students may have difficulty attending them.
