Aron Lee Ralston was born in a middle class American household. His family moved to
Colorado when Aron was 12 years old and this move laid the foundation for his love for hiking
around the canyons.
Aron’s life changed on April 26th, 2003, upon facing the event that threatened to take his life,
and almost took it. He was hiking through the Blue John Canyon and he accidentally displaced a
huge rock he was climbing down from. The rock caught his right hand in between itself and the
canyon wall.
Aron had decided to go on the adventure alone and hadn’t informed anybody about it. So, when
he was unable to free his right hand, he felt he would be stuck forever in there. He tried hard to get
his hand out but failed, and screaming for help was of no use either. Moreover, he didn’t want to
wear himself out as shouting for help would take a lot of energy, which was essential for surviving
the unfortunate event for a long period of time.
After a couple of days, he knew it was impossible for him to set himself free from an
800-pound rock. He decided to cut off his right hand. He had a blunt (钝的)pocket knife with him,
which wasn’t sharp enough to cut through the bone. Some time passed and his water and food
supply ended. He carved his name, date of birth and a possible date of death on the stone.
But luckily he got a strange idea that he could use the torque ( 扭 转 力 )and his bones to
separate his arm from his body. With the help of his very limited tool, he finally succeeded and
walked out of the canyon, bleeding in large amounts. Fortunately, a holidaying family saw him and
gave him food and water, and then took him to a hospital.
After the accident, Aron got a prosthetic limb( 假 肢 )and continued mountain climbing,
considering the accident as a“turning point in his life”.
4. What happened to Aron while he was hiking?
A. He was too tired and unable to climb
B. He got a hand stuck between a rock and the canyon wall
C. He accidentally fell down the mountain.
D. He suffered a knife wound in his right leg
5. Why did Aron stop calling for help?
A. He found a way to save himself. B. He met a family on vacation.

On August 8, 2023, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
released its first assessment of climate science since 2013. The news was not good. The report
stated that this past decade was the hottest in 125, 000 years and that the atmospheric carbon levels
are the highest in at least 2 million years. Glaciers are melting faster than any time in over 2, 000
years, and ocean levels have been rising at twice the rate since 2006.
At the current pace, the researchers expect global temperatures to rise by at least 1.5℃,
compared to pre-industrial levels, within the next 20 years. The temperature increases will result in
significant changes to the planet’s water cycle. Areas that currently receive a lot of rain will get
significantly more, while dry regions will become increasingly droughty.
The IPCC’s findings come as no surprise to the millions of people worldwide currently feeling
the impacts of climate-related disasters.America and many European countries are battling
wildfires.Meanwhile, an unprecedented(史无前例的) week-long storm in July 2021 caused flash
floods and mudslides in Western Europe. Climate change is even impacting the Earth’s coldest and
most remote regions which experienced the first rainfall event in recorded history.
The situation may sound hopeless. However, many experts believe it is still not too late to turn
things around, if we all act now. While governments need to do their share by introducing and
obeying stricter carbon emission laws, individuals can also help. Driving less, conserving water, and
reducing electricity usage are some great ways to start. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle will help
conserve natural resources and energy. It will also save you and your community. Be sure to start
doing your part to save our beautiful home today!
8. Why did IPCC release its first assessment of climate science?
A. To inform readers climate change is severe.
B. To state the earth’s temperature hits a record high.
C. To appeal to people to reduce carbon levels.
D. To report ocean levels are rising higher.
9. What may lead to great changes to the planet’s water cycle?
