Madame Marie Curie famously won two Nobel Prizes, but many other women have also

Selma Lagerlof
Selma Lagerlof was a Swedish author and teacher. She published her first novel, Gosta
Berling’s Saga, at the age of 33. She was the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in
Literature which she was awarded in 1909. Additionally, she was the first female to be granted (授
予) membership in the Swedish Academy (研究院).
Gerty Theresa Cori
Gerty and her husband, Carl Cori, met in Prague and lived in Austria before immigrating to
the United States in 1922, where the two medical doctors worked together at Roswell Park
Comprehensive Cancer Center in New York. In 1947, Gerty and Carl were awarded the Nobel
Prize in Physiology or Medicine, making Gerty Cori the first woman to hold the honor.
Maria Goeppert-Mayer
In 1942, Maria Goeppert-Mayer joined the Manhattan Project. From there, she moved on to
Los Alamos National Laboratory, then to Argonne National Laboratory, where Goeppert-Mayer
developed the nuclear shell model. For this, she shared the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physics with J.
Hans D．Jensen and Eugene Paul Wigner.
Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin
Dorothy Hodgkin’s mother encouraged her love of science as a child, and at age 18, she
began studying chemistry at a women-only Oxford college. Her work on mapping vitamin B12
earned her the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1964.

In the United States, most of our electricity comes from power plants (发电厂) that burn coal
and oil.
There are two big problems with using these things for electricity. First, their supply is
limited (有限的). Second, burning them causes pollution. So to make sure we always have power
and to keep our planet clean, we must find other ways to make electricity.
Some people think that wind power is our best choice. First, there will always be more wind.

Yet wind power may not keep growing so quickly in years to come. Why not? Many wind

build wind farms but are competing (竞争) with other uses for the land. A wind farm is a group of
turbines placed close together in an area with frequent winds.
In places where companies try to build wind farms, people think that lines of turbines are
ugly. Noise from turbines often troubles people. Also, turbines kill birds that fly into them.
Wind-power supporters disagree. They think the sight of wind turbines is lovely. They point
out that people have gotten used to living near noisy highways. They say ways can be found to
keep birds away from turbines.
In today’s world, we need clean and unlimited power sources more than ever. Unless a better
power source comes along, people may just have to accept wind power as a part of their lives.
