We often hear people say, “I have a good memory for things like that.” or “I can remember
names.”
But do you know memory is the single most important thing and it has played a very important
part? For early men, there were dangers all around them-bad weather, wild animals. The keys to
keep on living lay in man’s ability to remember these dangers and the ways he had dealt with them
in the past. And as man learned how to deal with them, he became civilized. Surprisingly, scientists
have not yet found a way to open up the brain and observe its function without destroying it.
Perhaps there are two types of memory: long-term and short-term. Short-term refers to those facts
that stay with us for a few seconds to a few hours. For example, when you stay at a hotel, you
remember the room number and forget it as soon as you leave. Long-term memory, on the other
hand, means you remember things for a long period of time. If you spend your honeymoon in a
special hotel, it’s likely that you’ll remember your stay quite clearly.
Scientists also believe that a short-term memory can become a long-term memory if a lot of
chemical and physical changes take place in the part of the brain. Although the human brain weighs
three pounds, it contains 30 billion nerve cells ( 神 经 细) acting like a computer. When those
changes strengthen the links in certain nerve cells, a thought becomes a part of the long-term
memory.

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly,
believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity(繁荣). Others say that competition
is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between
people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they
performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death
affairs. In their single-minded pursuit( 追 求 ) of success, the development of many other human
qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude.
In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary player, they
strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under
competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in
them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not
trying, they always have an excuse: “ I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t
try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost,
that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the
same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken
belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are
afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve()
can we discover a new meaning in competition.
11What does this passage mainly talk about?
ACompetition helps to set up self-respect.
BOpinions about competition are different among people.
CCompetition is harmful to personal quality development.
DFailures are necessary experiences in competition.
12Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?
AIt pushes society forward. BIt builds up a sense of duty.
CIt improves personal abilities. DIt encourages individual efforts.
13The underlined phrase “ the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 means _____.
Athose who try their best to win
Bthose who value competition most highly
Cthose who are against competition most strongly
Dthose who rely on others most for success
14What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a “desire to fail”?
AOne’s worth lies in his performance compared with others’.
BOne’s success in competition needs great efforts
COne’s achievement is determined by his particular skills.
DOne’s success is based on how hard he has tried.
15Which point of view may the author agree to?
AEvery effort should be paid back.
BCompetition should be encouraged.
CWinning should be a life-and-death matter.
DFear of failure should be removed in competition.

Friendship is a very important human relationship and everyone needs good friends. But there
are times in our lives such as when we have recently moved into a new town, or changed our
schools or jobs. Such changes often leave us without a friend. 16 But for many of us, the
process is difficult and requires courage. Below are some helpful suggestions on how to make and
keep friends.
Start a conversation.
Starting a conversation is an important step in making new friends. 17 You can always
start the conversation. Being able to make small talks is a very useful skill in relating ()
with other people.
18
Choosing friends with common interests is important in building friendship as these interests
always bring you and your friend together. Hanging out will always be a pleasant experience.
Let it grow.
It is a good thing to stay in touch. However, try not to press your new friend with calls,
messages or visits as this would likely wear him or her out and finally you may lose your friend.
19
Enjoy your friendship.
The best way to enjoy your friendship is to allow your friends to be themselves. 20
Try not to change them from who they are to what you want them to be. Become the kind of friend
you will want your friend to be to you.
