The Self-Portrait Challenge
Have you ever done a self-portrait in an art lesson at school? Today, we’re challenging you to write
self-portrait poems. It’s not uncommon to feel like the way people see you on the outside doesn’t quite
match up with how you feel on the inside. So creating a self-portrait can be a good opportunity to address
those differences and present the realest, truest version of yourself.
Your challenge is to create a self-portrait in lines, using words instead of paint. Read on for some
more inspiration.
Writing Tips
• Have a go at writing a list of metaphors exploring your physical appearance, starting from your head
and working your way down towards your feet.
• Instead of representing yourself directly, take on another character, such as a fictional character, a
historical figure, or even a different version of yourself.
• Play around with personification, by taking on the voice of a physical object in your poem. Think
about what a self-portrait from the point of view of a mirror, or a bowl of your favourite food would look
like?
How to enter
This challenge is for writers aged up to 25 based anywhere in the world. The deadline is 23: 59 GMT,
17 March 2024. You can send a poem, or poems, written down, or as video or audio files. We are using
Submittable to accept submissions to this challenge. You will need to make a free Submittable account to
submit in this way. Using Submittable helps our team to manage and process entries more quickly.
Selected poets will be published on Young Poets Network.

Lima, the capital of Peru, is the world’s second largest desert city. The region is water-stressed. The
annual rainfall is less than 4 cm. Access to water is an ongoing problem for the residents in and around the
South American capital.
When industrial engineer Abel Cruz was a boy, his weekly work was to climb down a valley in the
foothills of the Peruvian Andes to fetch the family’s water from a spring. “It was downhill from the house,
far away and steep,” he says. Cruz began dreaming up better ways to collect water. Then he noticed that
subtropical plants capture rain and mist with their wide leaves. Actually Lima doesn’t lack in humidity ( 湿
度), averaging 83% year-round. Located in the foothills of the Andean mountains, it is close to the Pacific
Ocean, which ensures that blankets of thick fog roll in for three-quarters of a year. Eventually, Abel Cruz
struck upon the idea of a fog net.
Each upraised net is 20 square meters, where micro drops of water floating in the foggy atmosphere
condense (凝结) and drop into collection tanks. Approximately 200 to 400 litres of water is collected daily
from each net. Locals can fetch it in buckets for small-scale farming. Working in Lima with support from
the Creating Water Foundation, Cruz has installed over 3, 600 nets on hillsides around the city to capture
fog floating in from the Pacific Ocean. Cruz raised funds for hundreds of nets in Peru with his
revolutionary initiative Peruvians Without Water. He aims to set up even more fog harvesters, and to treat
the water to make it drinkable.
“The planet has less and less fresh water,” Cruz points out, “because the glaciers that are natural
reservoirs are disappearing. So we must find a way to accumulate and save water for times of drought.”
The technology is life-changing for the poor households who normally have to rely on water tanks being
delivered to them. His approach ends extreme poverty and brings rural development. Moreover, he is
trying to bring healthy and clean water also to urban areas lacking water.
24. Why does the author mention Cruz’s childhood experience in paragraph 2?
A.To illustrate the urgency of reducing poverty.
B.To trace the origin of Cruz’s great invention.
C.To highlight his responsibility for the family.
D.To stress Lima’s terrible geographical conditions.
25. What do we know about Cruz’s invention?
A.It was inspired from subtropical plants.
B.It promoted the scale of farming.
C.It used collection tanks where water drops condensed.
D.It resolved the drinking water issue with fog harvesters.
26. Which quality of Abel Cruz is shown in the text?
A.Optimism B.Generosity C.Frankness D.Creativity
27. Which one is probably the best title of the text?
A.The Worsening Water Crisis in Lima.
B.The Functions of an Innovative Fog-catcher.
C.Abel Cruz’s Invention and Its Great Significance.
D.Abel Cruz’s Fundraising for Water Collection.

Search “toxic parents”, and you’ll find more than 38, 000 posts, largely urging young adults to cut ties
with their families. The idea is to safeguard one’s mental health from offensive parents. However, as a
psychoanalyst (精神分析学家), I’ve seen that trend in recent years become a way to manage conflicts in
the family, and I have seen the severe impacts estrangement (疏远) has on both sides of the divide. This is
a self-help trend that creates much harm.
“Canceling” your parent can be seen as an extension of a cultural trend aimed at correcting
imbalances in power and systemic inequality. Today’s social justice values respond to this reality, calling
on us to criticize oppressive and harmful figures and to gain power for those who have been powerless. But
when adult children use the most effective tool they have—themselves—to gain a sense of security and
ban their parents from their lives, the roles are simply switched, and the pain only deepens.
Often, what I see in my practice are cases of family conflict mismanaged, power dynamics turned
upside down rather than negotiated. I see the terrible effect of that trend: situations with no winners, only
isolated humans who long to be known and feel safe in the presence of the other.
The catch is that after estrangement, adult children are not suddenly less dependent. In fact, they feel
abandoned and betrayed, because in the unconscious, it doesn’t matter who is doing the leaving; the feeling
that remains is “being left”. They carry the ghosts of their childhood, tackling the emotional reality that
those who raised us can never truly be left behind, no matter how hard we try.
What I have found is that most of these families need repair, not permanent break-up. How can one
learn how to negotiate needs, to create boundaries and to trust? How can we love others, and ourselves, if
not through accepting the limitations that come with being human? Good relationships are not the result of
a perfect level of harmony but rather of successful adjustments.
To pursue dialogue instead of estrangement will be hard and painful work. It can’t be a single project
of “self-help”, because at the end of the day, real intimacy (亲密关系) is achieved by working through the
injuries of the past together. In most cases of family conflict, repair is possible and preferable to
estrangement—and it’s worth the work.
28. Why do young people cut ties with the family?
A.To gain an independent life. B.To follow a tendency towards social justice.
C.To restore harmony in the family. D.To protect their psychological well-being.
29. What does the underlined word “catch” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Response. B.Problem. C.Bond. D.Division.
30. To manage family conflict, what should young adults do in the author’s view?
A.Break down boundaries. B.Accept imperfection of family members.
C.Live up to their parents’ expectations. D.Repair a family item that has broken up.
31. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A.To advocate a self-help trend. B.To justify a common social value.
C.To argue against a current practice. D.To discuss a means of communication.
D
Is forgiveness against our human nature? To answer the question, we need to ask a further question:
What is the essential nature of our humanity? For the sake of simplicity, people consider two clearly
different views of humanity. The first view involves dominance and power. In an early paper on the
psychology of forgiveness, Droll (1984) made the interesting claim that humans’ essential nature is more
aggressive than forgiving. Those who forgive are against their basic nature, much to their harm. In his
opinion, forgivers are compromising their well-being as they offer mercy to others, who might then take
advantage of them.
