本试卷分第 I卷和第 II 卷两部分，共 12 页，满分 150 分。考试用时 120 分钟。考试结

束后，将本试卷和答题卡一并交回。

注意事项:

1. 答题前，考生务必用 0.5 毫米黑色签字笔将自己的姓名、座号、考生号、县区和科类填

写在答题卡和试卷规定的位置上。

2. 第I卷每小题选出答案后，用 2B 铅笔在答题卡上对应题目的答案标号涂黑，如需要改

动，用橡皮擦干净后，再选涂其他答案标号。

3. 第II 卷必须用 0.5 毫米黑色签字笔作答，答案必须写在答题卡各题目指定区域内相应的

Whenever we hear about “the homeless,”, most of us think of the Developing World. But the

The Pacific island nation of Nauru used to be a beautiful place. Now it is an ecological

disaster area. Nauru’s heartbreaking story could have one good consequence — other countries

might learn from its mistakes.

For thousands of years, Polynesian people lived on the remote island of Nauru, far from

western civilization. The first European to arrive was John Fearn in 1798. He was the British

captain of the Hunter, a whaling ship. He called the island Pleasant Island.

However, because it was very remote, Nauru had little communication with Europeans at

first. The whaling ships and other traders began to visit, bringing guns and alcohol. These

elements destroyed the social balance of the twelve family groups on the island. A ten-year civil

war started, which reduced the population from 1,400 to 900.

Nauru’s real troubles began in 1899 when a British mining company discovered phosphate

(磷酸盐)on the island. In fact, it found that the island of Nauru was nearly all phosphate, which is

a very important fertilizer for farming. The company began mining the phosphate.

A phosphate mine is not a hole in the ground; it is a strip mine. When a company strip-mines,

it removes the top layer of soil. Then it takes away the material it wants. Strip mining totally
