ALEX pedaled his bike along the country lane that led to his house. As he rounded a bend, the tips of the

cattails that grew around Johnson’s Pond came into view. His dad took him canoeing there sometimes, and Alex

loved it. The pond was always so alive with activity. Frogs croaked along the shore, dragonflies hunted among the

cattails, and sometimes Alex discovered turtles(乌龟) basking(晒太阳) on sunny rocks.

Alex was curious about the turtles he saw. One week, when it was too rainy to go canoeing, he and his dad

went to the library to check out books on turtles. Alex learned that turtles don’t have warm blood like people do.

That’s why they have to sit in the sun to warm themselves. Now it looked like tomorrow might be another sunny

day. He decided he would ask Dad if they could go canoeing and look for turtles again.

Just then Alex saw something in the road up ahead. It looked like a big gray rock. But it was a funny place for

a rock to be.

And then, as Alex watched, the rock started to move.

When he rode his bike up to get a closer look, he saw that it wasn’t a rock at all. It was a large turtle crawled

its way across the road. It had a bony, beak-shaped mouth and a long, jagged tail. Alex knew right away it was a

snapping turtle.

He also knew not to get too close. He had read that a snapping turtle has a powerful bite even though it doesn’t

have teeth. It could even bite off someone’s finger. He stood at a distance and watched the turtle move slowly over

the road.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a car approaching. The turtle was still only halfway across the road. Alex

knew he couldn’t pick it up to move it safely to the grass. What could he do?

The shiny black sports car sat at the traffic lights. The driver’s window was down, and the driver was wearing

a suit and dark sunglasses. It was an expensive car. Thomas Campbell knew that because he used to have one. But

now he was sitting on a bench, which had served as his bed for the previous few nights, with no more than a pocket

full of change to his name. The lights changed, the car sped off and Thomas sighed.

It had all happened in the space of a year. He was laid off from bis well-paid job when the economy took a

turn for the worse. Although he was paid handsomely.he lived a lifestyle to match and always spent any raise or

bonus on expensive but unnecessary things. Losing his job put pressure on his marriage and his wife left. Then he

couldn’t make his mortgage (贷款) repayments. A few weeks later be found himself in a cheap hotel and a few

months after that, in a sleeping bag under a bridge downtown.

As Thomas walked in the streets late that night.he thought about the man in the car and about whether be could

improve his life again. He had grown up quite poor, so was used to not having much, but living outside was hard.

Perhaps the hardest thing was how differently people treated him now when he didn’t have a suit or haircut. They

often said negative things. Even worse than that was just treating him as invisible. Once he walked past someone he

used to work with, they looked through him like he weren’t there, and it made him feel less than a human.

Then as be turned a corner, he heard the cries of a child from a second-storey window. He could see a little girl

with a thick plume (缕) of smoke surrounding her. He looked about but no one was nearby. He shouted to the girl,

but she was crying and coughing and couldn’t hear him. Then be heard another cry from inside. It was a baby.

The summer I turned 16, my father gave me his 69 Chevy Malibu convertible (敞篷车). Beautifully repainted

cherry red with V-8 engine—it was a gift wasted on me at that age. What did I know about classic cars? The

important thing was that Hannah and I could drive around Tucson with the top down.

Hannah was my best friend, a year younger but much taller, almost five foot ten.“Hannah’s a beautiful girl,”

my mother always said. And sure enough, that summer she signed with a modeling agency. She was already doing

runway work .

A month after my birthday, Hannah and I went to the movies. On the way home, we stopped at the

McDonald’s drive-through, putting the fries on the seat between us to share. “Let’s ride around a-while,” I said. It

was a clear night, oven-warm, full moon casting low over the desert. Making a turn too fast, l hit a patch of dirt and

the back of the car slid to the other side. I then drove through a neighbor’s landscape wall and knocked into a full-

grown palm. The front wheels came to rest half way up the tree trunk.

There were French fries on the floor, the dash (仪表盘), and my lap. An impossible amount of blood was on

Hannah’s face, flaps of skin hanging into her eyes. They took us in separate ambulances. In the ER, my parents

spoke quietly: “Best plastic surgeon in the city…but it is more likely to be the end of her modeling career.…”

We’d been wearing lap belts, but the car didn’t have shoulder bands. I’d broken my cheek bone on the steering

wheel; Hannah’s forehead had split wide open on the dash. What would I say to her?

When her mother, Sharon, came into my hospital room, I started to cry, preparing myself for her anger. She sat

beside me and took my hand. “I rear-ended (追尾) my best friend when I was your age,” she said. “I destroyed her

car and mine.” “I’m so sorry.” I said, knowing Sharon was trying her best to comfort me and helping me out of my
