Having worked at a small food store for two years, I thought I had become successful at what our manager called
“customer relations”. I firmly believed that a friendly smile and an automatic “sir”, “madam”, “thank you” and “sorry”
would see me through any situation. But on a Christmas night an old woman shook my belief that such a glib response (巧
言应对) could smooth over any difficulty while dealing with other human beings.
The moment she entered the store, the woman presented a sharp contrast to our shiny store with its bright lighting and
neatly arranged shelves. Walking as if each step were painful, she slowly pushed open the glass door. On such a zero-degree
night, she was wearing only a faded print dress, a thin sweater too small to button, and black slippers with the backs cut out
to expose heels. There were no stockings or socks on her blue-veined legs.
After walking around the store for several minutes, the old woman stopped in front of the rows of canned vegetables.
She looked at the row of cans, finally picked up a can of corn and stared at the label. At that point, I decided to be a good
and polite employee and asked her if she needed help. As I stood close to her, my smile became harder to maintain. An
unpleasant smell of sweat rose from her torn clothing.
“I need some food,” she muttered in reply to my bright “Madam, can I help you?”
“Are you looking for corn, madam?”
“I need some food,” she repeated, looking down at the can in her hand, “Any kind.”
“Well, the can of corn is ninety-five cents, madam.” I said in my most helpful voice. “Or if you like, we have a special
on bread today.”
After a short pause, she lifted her head and said, “But I can’t pay.”
For a second, it was on the tip of my tongue to tell her that she could take the corn.

“Go back, Mom! Go back!” shouted my six-year-old daughter, June. I quickly turned around to cast my doubtful eyes
on the back seat, worried I had forgotten her younger sister. I was relieved to see the girls safe and sit in their car seats, but
June’s expression was one of pure anxiety. “Mom, we have to go back,” she insisted. “Someone needs our help!”
As I looked back from the driver’s seat, I spotted a young man in rags playing his guitar. His skinny, poor-looking dog
rested next to his feet near an old, worn cardboard sign that read, “Homeless, please help.”
We’d come across homeless people before and had talked about their needs and struggles. I should seize the chance to
set a good example for my daughters to give a helping hand. So I searched for some cash, only to find I had nothing but
credit cards. “I’m sorry, sweetheart, but I don’t have any cash,” I said. “I have some, Mom!” June replied. She opened her
little pink purse and pulled out a five-dollar bill. “Oh, good. I’ll pay you back when we get home,” I responded with a sigh
of relief. “No. Mom.” she insisted, “I want to help him. I don’t want you to pay me back. I want to give him my money.”
As we drove down the crowded rows of the parking lot, I reassured her that we would get to him.
When we got there. I called out, “Excuse me, sir!” He cautiously walked toward our car and answered, “Yes, ma’am?”
“Here you go, sir.” June stretched out her entire body to hand him her five-dollar bill through the window and explained, “I
want you to have this.” He smiled and hesitatingly asked, “This was your money?” “Yes! I want you to have it,” she proudly
answered. “Thank you,” he said, touched by her thoughtfulness.
We exchanged a smile, and as we drove away, my younger daughter Scarlett began to cry. I hadn’t noticed that she had
emptied her purse and was holding two quarters in her tiny hands.

One day an elderly postman knocked on the door of a house and asked if there was anyone to take the letter. As soon as
he said this, a little girl's voice echoed (回响) from inside, but even after 5 minutes no one came out.
"Can anyone help you take the letter? I have to go to many more places." the postman said again.
"Uncle, if you are in a hurry, please put the letter under the door. It will take me more time. " the girl replied.
"No, it is a registered letter. Someone's signature is needed." the postman yelled.
Another 10 minutes past, there's no response. The postman got a bit cross about the delay, and he was about to shout
when the door opened. He was shocked to see in front of him was a little girl with no legs. Speechless, he gave the letter
quietly, took her signature and left. That day he got her name, Sally.
Sally often lived alone. Her mother died at an early age and her lather used to work far away. A maid (女仆) was
invited to stay with her in the morning and evening except the day. In a month or two, mails were delivered regularly, and
their interaction and attachment grew. Sally noticed that the postman used io come barefoot. Rainy season came. One day
when the postman left her home, his footprints were left on wet soil. Sally struggled out with a paper and put it on print and
took down the picture of his feet. She asked her maid to get shoes of that size and kept them in a box.
Diwali (排灯节) was around the corner. During Diwali, the postman used to deliver mails and got Diwali gifts from the
people who got mails. But when he thought about Sally, he started thinking that he shouldn't meet the girl empty-handed
during the festival. After much thought he bought some chocolate for the little girl. The next day, he went to the little girl's
house and knocked.

【江苏省涟水县第一中学 2022-2023 学年高三上学期第一次阶段检测】阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头
语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Fiona Simpson, 23, was on her way home. She was driving on the D'Aguilar Highwav in Queensland, Australia. It was
a long, lonely road, but she had company at least. Her 78-year-old grandmother and four-month-old daughter were with her
for the journey.
Clouds started to roll in overhead. Fiona hadn't bothered to listen to the weather report that morning. Mostly because
she had expected to arrive home before any sort of downpour hit. As she drove down the D’Aguilar Highway, however, the
slight pattering(拍打) of rain began to beat into an angry drum beat upon the roof of the car.
Even though she had been driving quite slowly, she could hardly see the lines in the road. The pouring rain soon
became so heavy that her windshield wipers(雨刮器) couldn't keep up. Fiona knew that her only option was to pull the car
onto the side of the road until the bad weather lessened.
She stopped the car when suddenly she heard a sound that completely shocked her. The loud bang came from behind
her, right near the window where her daughter sat. The glass of the window was broken, and a moment later she discovered
that something equally sharp and dangerous was hitting her child.
It was hailstones(冰雹), nearly golf-ball-sized chunks of ice falling from the sky. Hailstones can cause serious damage.
Even cattle can be killed as well if they do not seek shelter. Fiona dived into the back seat and tried to form a human
shield(挡板) over the baby. Meanwhile, the hailstone was battering the roof of the car so loudly that she couldn't even hear
the child crying beneath her.
Queensland had apparently been hit with a super-cell storm that resulted in tennis-ball-sized hailstones. Soon, even
Grandma was being battered with the same falling ice. Fiona moved towards the front, still holding her baby in her arms,
and tried to shield Grandma as well. Fiona found them caught right in the middle of the storm with nowhere to hide.
