My teenage son, Jordan, always complained about having to be home earlier than all his friends. He would tell me that
he was already seventeen, but still had a curfew (宵禁). He believed he was practically an adult. I pointed out that he was
not an adult as he was still in high school.
“You don’t trust me!” he yelled. Before I continued, he rolled his eyes, slammed the door and walked away. I sighed.
How could I make Jordan see that I only wanted to keep him safe?
I decided to go for a walk, hoping the December air would clear my head. I opened the front door and nearly stepped
on her: a small black cat, just like a meatball. “Hi, Meatball,” I said, bringing her into my arms. I walked back in, touching
her neck gently. Meatball seemed happy enough to come in the house, but after an hour or two, she sat by the door,
meowing to go back outside.
“Why won’t she just stay in with us all the time?” Nathan, my youngest son asked.
I explained to him that she was happy here but she liked being able to come and go as she pleased.
“That must be nice,” Jordan muttered from the other room, complaining why the cat, not him, could come and go. He
even asked me to give Meatball a curfew.
Meatball became a regular.
One night, temperatures were unusually low. Meatball stood at the door, meowing to go outside.
I shook my head at her, afraid that she might freeze to death. She stared at me and meowed again. I patted her head, “I
know you’re not happy, but it’s for your own good.”
“Mom’s not being mean to you,” Nathan told the cat. “She’s just trying to keep you from turning into a frozen
meatball.” We both laughed at his joke.
The next morning, I couldn’t find Meatball. I asked the kids if anyone had seen her.

【江苏省常州市第一中学 2022-2023 学年高三上学期期初检测】阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成
一个完整的故事。
It was our turn to open our presents this particular Christmas morning. The living room was already covered with torn
wrapping paper. Obviously, the children could hardly wait to discover the hidden treasures, which they had expected for
nearly a month. Now we adults sat around the room with our presents at our feet, slowly removing the paper, trying to
maintain our dignity in front of the children.
My wife, Brenda, and her family have a tradition of getting each other gag (恶作剧) gifts. This always makes me a bit
uneasy at Christmas or my birthday, never knowing what form of embarrassment lies waiting for me under the thin borders
of the wrapping paper.
Recently, my six-year-old daughter Christy seemed to busy herself with something while I was playing computer video
flight games. Now she was standing directly in front of me. The excitement of the moment just beamed across her face. It
was everything she could do to keep herself from helping me rip the paper from each present. Finally, I came to the last gift
and with my natural Sherlock Holmes ability, I concluded that this had to be the gag gift. With everyone looking on, I
decided to go ahead and get it over with—just let them have their laugh—and I tore the paper and there it was a toy airplane
about two inches long. Our holiday guests started giggling to themselves as I looked up to my wife with an unpleasant smile
on my face and blurted out (脱口而出), “A toy airplane? Are you kidding me?”
Brenda gave me the look—that look that always tells me I have just said something wrong and should have given it a
second thought. I had failed to look at the name tag before I opened the present to see who it was from. As I picked up the
paper from the floor and read the name tag, my heart sank.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

On the tag were the letters that read, “To Dad, Love Christy”.

段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Here is a secret that everyone knows: I don’t like to ask for help. Of course, my disability means that I need assistance
when I get dressed and have to be driven everywhere, but that is precisely my point.
One night a few years ago, after my caregiver helped me to bed, I enjoyed my favorite part of my routine — playing
with my service dog Marshall. When the rest of the world made me feel “lacking”, Marshall made me feel like “enough” .
As usual, he jumped off the bed after a few minutes, but the pain in his eyes told me something was wrong. A few
days later, a trip to the vet confirmed my worst fears. Dr Tom said, “I must perform an operation to treat him.”“Is he in
pain?”I held my breath. Then I got the answer “Yes.”
I felt heartbroken. I couldn’t remember talking about the details. I had one huge question:“How much would the
operation cost?”“About$2, 500. It might as well have been a million.” I couldn’t afford it. Each day, I searched for ways to
raise money for this operation.
A beautiful bike trail was close to the apartment where we lived. On most of the days of our eight years together,
Marshall and I used it. I loved the trees, the fresh air and being outside. Over the years, many of the neighbors got familiar
with us. Everyone loved Marshall.
Then one day, an idea occurred to me. Could I ask these people to contribute to the cost of Marshall’s operation? If I
could push my wheelchair a certain number of laps (圈) and get money for every lap that I completed, might I raise enough
money for Marshall to have his operation? Our regular route was a mile and a half long. My goal was to push my
wheelchair ten laps, a total of fifteen miles. Next, feeling very bold and a little nervous, I set a date. Then I made posters and
posted them around my apartment and all over the bike trail. My neighbors were concerned for Marshall.

1.续写词数应为 150 左右;

With hope, I started to train myself.

两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I couldn’t bear it any longer! My best friend had gone for lunch with the most popular girl in class, leaving me to eat
my tuna sandwich alone in the library. Worse still, during dance class, my partner, a boy, refused to hold my hand and bad
mouthed me behind my back, further feeding my anger. It was, without a doubt, my worst day in school. I was hurt and
mad, and looking for a target to release my anger.
When I got home from school , Mother had baked peanut butter cookies and piled them up on a plate. She even artfully
decorated each one with royal icing and topped it with sugar. “Couldn’t you have made chocolate. chip?” I said moodily. “I
could have,” she replied from the laundry room, “but I made peanut butter ones. Eat them while they’re still hot, sweetie.”
Although I thought Mother was rather unthoughtful, I caved in and took a few bites unwillingly in the end. Later, when she
pulled a grilled chicken from the oven and sang a merry tune, I somehow got annoyed again — Never mind that Mother had
busied herself the whole afternoon with the cooking just to put this hot meal on the table. I wanted hamburgers.
“Nobody even likes that kind of food, Mum! Why didn’t you make hamburgers?” I complained. Mother took a deep
breath, ran her fingers through her messy hair and looked into my eyes with a puzzled look. “Sweetheart, you’ve never
complained about having it before. What’s up?” she said matter-of-factly.
It was from there that all went downhill. I screamed and complained nonstop until Mother hit her limit. Unable to
contain her anger,” No dinner for you! Go to bed now !”she exploded. It was the first time that Mother had got mad at me.
Nobody seemed to care about me, including my beloved mother! Ultimately, we had a shouting match in the hallway. I
stormed to my bedroom, anger mounting up within me.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I screamed and wept bitterly in bed.
