I’m from the fishing town of Kinsale, in Ireland. Life is pretty good there, but Dubai caught my attention when I was
18. I moved there myself 10 years ago as a 30-year-old film-maker. It’s been a wild ride, full of chaos and wonder.
My wife, Christine, lives here with me; when her sister Angela came to visit in April this year, the three of us set off in
my pickup truck. It was a cloudless day, touching 40 ℃. The heat and humidity were violent, so we had to sightsee from the
car.
We took the scenic route between Dubai and Ras al-Khaimah, a charming city in the north. A year earlier, while off-
roading with a friend, I got stuck at a water crossing there, at the only inlet on the coast, where the sea flows into a swampy
lagoon (咸水湖). I had to be rescued, and learned how quickly the tide (潮水) could come in.
Christine spotted what looked like the Loch Ness monster stuck in the sand. We decided to investigate and drove up to
where the sand met the lagoon. It was a camel, not moving.
Since relocating here, I have always kept a shovel, rope, torches and knives in my car—getting stuck in the desert can
be debilitating (耗费体力的).
I got out my shovel and approached the camel. It was a female; we nicknamed her Stucky. It looked as if she had been
trapped for hours—she was in quite deep. I’ve been around camels a lot in Dubai; they are massive. They can be friendly,
but they can also be fierce. I approached Stucky slowly and started to gently dig away the sand around her. I kept patting
her. I knew if she swung her head around quickly, she could injure herself, or me.

I had never noticed her. She was not the kind of girl who could draw attention. She was not tall and just plain. In class,
she liked sitting at the back, reading or taking notes. It was once I asked her to read aloud the text that I looked at her with
new eyes when I heard her standard American pronunciation. Later on, the National College English Speech Contest would
be held. I thought it over and filled in her name with a smile. I red-penciled her draft of speech, corrected her pronunciation,
and even adjusted her body language.
However, I was always kind of worried because she was too introvert(内向的)and too quiet. Could she seize this rare
opportunity?
On the night of the contest, I told her to take it easy. Blushed(脸红的), she looked at me and said nothing.
My heart sank. It seemed that she did tense up. I pated her and let her go to draw lots(抽签). As a result, what she drew
was No. 9 while No. 8 was recognized English master-hand(高手).
Sure enough, the English master-hand was fairly successful in the speech with his humor and highly personal style.
The whole audience would make a warm applause almost every 30 seconds until she appeared on the stage, still talking
over his speech with excitement.
My palms began to sweat. I sat there, with no courage to look at her. It was the first time that she went up the stage, so
I couldn't blame her for any slips. But at that moment, I found I was so scared of her failure.
The strong spotlight made her so small and so insignificant that nobody seemed to notice she had been on the stage, I
said to myself, no hope.
But the moment that shocked me occurred. I clearly heard a voice, a very loud voice, “Now, please focus on me.” She
said this sentence three times in all, louder and louder.

Lucy was very nervous. She had a swimming competition in the morning and could not sleep. She tossed and turned all
night. She was no stranger to competition. In fact, she loved it. Lucy was very athletic and was not only part of a swim
team, but a soccer team as well. But this particular competition was important. She had made it all the way to the finals and
didn’t want to let her teammates down.
When her alarm went off at 6: 00 am, she hit the snooze button and rolled onto her side, wishing she could just stay in
bed all day. Having slept so poorly, Lucy was not at all ready for the day. After a few minutes, she stretched her arms above
her head and yawned before throwing her covers back and climbing out of bed.
She was terribly anxious about the competition, so much that she couldn’t even eat breakfast. It felt as though her
stomach was doing somersaults (翻腾). Lucy’s mother looked concerned. “You have to eat something,” she said. “It’s
important to keep your strength up.” “I know, I’m just not hungry this morning,” Lucy replied, picking at her eggs with a
fork. All she could think about was facing the competition. What if she performed poorly? What if she disappointed her
coach and teammates? She wouldn’t be able to forgive herself.
Lucy’s mom sensed her daughters worry and gave her a reassuring (令人宽慰的) pat on the back. “You’ll be great,
dear. Just do your best. That’s all that matters.”
Lucy felt a bit of relief and appreciated her mothers kind words. But by the time she got to the athletic club where the
swim meet was being held, that feeling of comfort had dissolved (消融). She went to the locker room to prepare for the
competition, but when she opened her gym bag, she was quite surprised.

Emily White came to the world 17 years ago, with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and
muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive long. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone
could recognize her, even from a distance.
In her hometown, a yearly outdoor performance was held in the school auditorium (礼堂). It had been performed for so
many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the own's
people.
Many people tried out each year for it, but so many were turned away. It can only in elude the most excellent people in
the field.
Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Owens—her music teacher to ask to join in the
performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a glance at Amy's body and said, ''Child, you are just not suitable.
Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too. ''
Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral (合唱的) room. Hurt and upset, she
decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.
This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Butler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.
Emily didn't want to be rejected again, so she hesitated about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr.
Butler called, ''Emily, you’re next.'' Kind of nervous as she was, Emily did as Mr. Butler told her to. Mr. Butler sat by the
piano to keep Emily company. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Butler and knew the result
would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Emily couldn’t sleep that night. She tossed and turned in bed one thousand times. She was suffering from the feelings
that she didn't fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain due to stress.
Paragraph 1:
Emily hurried to the choral room and anxiously glanced at the list on the door of the choral room.
