Four unusual festivals around the world
The Wife Carrying World Championships — Sonkajärvi, Finland
Although the exact origins of the tradition are unknown because of its long history, but today, wife carrying is
practiced around the world. Participants are allowed to carry their wives in various ways, including a piggyback or
a fireman’s carry (over the shoulder). The prize for winning the race is the wife’s weight in beer.
The Monkey Buffet (自助餐) Festival — Lopburi, Thailand
You may consider how a monkey would taste, but this is a buffet for monkeys. The local monkeys in Lopburi
are gifted with a feast of tons of fruits, vegetables, cakes, and candies every November. After the monkeys are
given the treats, youths dressed up as monkeys perform dances. The festival first took place in 1989, run by a local
businessman to boost tourism in Lopburi. Luckily for him and the monkeys, it worked.
The Boryeong Mud Festival — Boryeong, South Korea
The festival first took place in 1998, and it was originally created as a marketing event for Boryeong mud
cosmetics (化妆品). The mud from Boryeong is considered rich in natural minerals and is used to make beauty
products. Popular activities include mud swimming, mud slides and mud skiing.
The La Tomatina Festival — Buñol, Valencia, Spain
The festival has been organized annually in August in Buñol since 1940s, when a noisy crowd take the
tomatoes from a vegetable stall and start a food fight. The hour long tomato fight used up about 145,000 kg of

It was the day before Thanksgiving and Kaleb Benham was wandering around outside his home in Noring
California. His 90-pound pit bull, Buddy, was playing around nearby, doing what dogs do: getting into trouble.
And this time, Buddy was getting into a whole lot of trouble.
The unmistakable sound that no one wants to hear alone in the woods caught Benham’s attention. It was the
deep, strange roar of a black bear. Benham wheeled around to see the beast, which Benham figured weighed
around 350 pounds, some 100 feet away. In an instant, the bear fastened on to Buddy’s head and started dragging
him away.
Benham, a thin, fit 24-year-old, took off after them. “Honestly,” he told CBS13, “the only thing I could
think of was ‘save my baby’.” Sprinting, he lowered his shoulder and plowed into the bear. But it only tightened
its grip on Buddy. Benham grabbed the bear by the throat. Nothing. He tried getting its mouth open, but the jaw
was locked tight. Benham resorted to street fighting—punching the bear over and over around its snout and eye.
It worked. The bear dropped the dog and ran off into the woods.
Buddy was in bad shape. His face was bloodied and ripped up. His ears were dangling. He had a bite mark
clear through his lip and one that barely missed an eye.
“My first thought was that I was going to lose him,” Benham said. He scooped up Buddy, put him into his
car, and sped off to a nearby veterinarian. Buddy’s surgery took nearly four hours. Benham watched the
procedure through a window. “I just stood there,” he said, watching as Buddy’s ears were stapled back on and
skin flaps were stitched, and tubes were inserted into his head to drain fluid.
This was the second time Benham had rescued Buddy, says CBS13. The first was from a shelter a few years
ago. “If it was your kid, what would you do?” he asked. Nodding toward Buddy, he added, “That’s my kid.”
4. What is the text mainly about?
A. A demanding surgery. B. A regular routine.
C. A fearless pet dog. D. A daring rescue.
5. Why did the author mention the weight of the bear in paragraph 2?
A. To show the difficulty of the rescue.
B. To indicate the obesity of the bear.
C. To prove the excitement of Benham.
D. To describe the fear in Buddy’s heart.

This is a typical (典型的) day for Yang Jinlong.
At 9 a. m., he drives to primary schools and middle schools in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, to teach students
about Shaanxi kuaiban. It is a traditional Chinese form of storytelling to the rhythm (节奏) of bamboo clapper (
), which the art form is named after. Sometimes, he helps students prepare for competitions. Usually, his classes
run until about 6 p. m. and then he returns home to prepare classes for the next day.
On June 10, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced 325 national intangible cultural heritage (非物质
文化遗产) items in Beijing, increasing the list to1, 557 items. Shaanxi kuaiban, which appeared during the late
Qing Dynasty, has been included. The form has been introduced to local schools as part of their art education.
Yang has been teaching young people the art form since 2003 after graduating from the National Academy of
Chinese Theatre Arts in Beijing. He studied quyi there. Quyi is a general term for Chinese folk art forms, including
storytelling crosstalk and clapper talk.
“Art education is important for students in China. Just as many students learn to play Western musical
instruments like the piano and vioiin, there are many people learning traditional Chinese folk arts, including
Shaanxi kuaiban, which I’ll work for my whole life,” he said.
Kuaiban is popular in northern China, including Beijing and Tianjin. According to Yang, Shaanxi kuaiban was
influenced by the art of different areas. The art form can be played by a group of players or only one. With one or
two pairs of kuaiban of different sizes in hand, the players speak in the local dialect (方言) while telling stories,
which are usually about heroes. The player tells stories while playing kuaiban, and it’s easy for the watchers to
remember the stories since all the lines rhyme.
Thanks to artists like Yang, this traditional Chinese form of storytelling is passed on and stays alive in our
country.
8. Why is today a typical day for Yang Jinlong?
A. He is teaching students about kuaiban as usual.
