Pop art, which emerged in the 1950s and rose in popularity throughout the 1960s, sought to
challenge the idea of fine art.
Andy Warhol (1928-1987)
Andy Warhol is probably the most influential figure of Pop Art. He became a famous celebrity
himself. Understanding ‘star-culture’, advertisement and the effect of the media, he made these the
core of his work. His screenprinted images of Marilyn Monroe, Soup cans, and thrilling newspaper
stories, quickly became synonymous (同义的) with Pop art.
Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997)
Roy Lichtenstein is one of the fathers of the Pop Art movement. In November 2015, Christie’s
sold Lichtenstein’s ‘Nurse’ for a record $95.4 million. In this piece, as well as in other works, we
can see how the enlarged imagery of advertisements and comics with recognizable characters,
highlights the ironic (讽刺好笑的) images and situations in everyday life.
英语试卷 A2 11
Mimmo Rotella (1918-2006)
Italian artist Mimmo Rotella, was one of the most important figures of post-war European art.
He combined pieces of advertisements and posters in his works. For this technique he used a series
of torn posters, gathering them to create a tremendously expressive and powerful aesthetic ().
His works Sempre lei Marilyn (2002) and Viva America (1963) are easy to recognize.
James Rosenquist (1933-2017)
James Rosenquist can be considered one of the strongest and most influential modern Pop Art
artists. His work dived deep into advertising. He employed techniques which are conventionally
used to create Commercial Art. His works appear as an overwhelming mixture of fragmented (成碎
片 的 ) images of current celebrities, everyday objects and popular foods—giant lipsticks or
spaghetti. If you go to Centre Pompidou, Paris, you can see his work President-Elect.
1. What artwork will you turn to if you are interested in Andy Warhol?

C. Viva America. D. President-Elect.
2. Which artist creates his works by putting together torn posters?

We’ve all heard the stories of an actors struggles before a career breakthrough: living a hard
life, working part time, being a couch potato before getting that major role. Shelby, the star of “A
Dog’s Way Home”, has a hard-luck tale that could top them all. Before her big break, she was living
in a landfill (垃圾填埋场), rooting through garbage for her next meal.
Shelby’s big break came in April 2017, when animal-control officer Megan Buhler was driving
in Cheatham County, Tennessee. Out on an unrelated call, Buhler spotted and approached what she
recalled was a noticeably scared puppy emerging from the garbage dump. “I knelt down and just
said, Oh, come here, baby,’” said Buhler. “She was so scared, but she came right up to me, and I
was able to put her in my truck.” The pair headed to the county animal shelter, where the staff
began calling the new resident Baby Girl.
Buhler and others didn’t know that 3,200 kilometers away, Hollywood was looking for a dog to
play Bella in a film written by Cathryn Michon. The find-a-Bella job went to dog trainer Teresa Ann
Miller. Her mission was to search shelters nationwide for a dog that could play Bella. One day,

Miller spotted Baby Girl’s adoption photo. “Honestly, it was a really good picture, and she was
smiling happily,” Miller said. Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed her on personality and the
ability to respond to simple commands. After assessment, she adopted Baby Girl from the shelter,
renamed her Shelby and took her to California for training. Miller and Shelby trained for just over
three months before filming began. Then they were together each day on the set.
Most of the film’s reviews have praised Shelby’s performance. Variety made the comments “an
amazing dog, perfect performance!”
Shelby has come a long way from the garbage dump. But Buhler said when she saw Shelby
recently she just needed only a second to compare the movie star with the dog she found from piles
of trash. “She’s exactly the same, with the same big grin on her face.” Buhler said.
4. Why is an actors struggle before a career breakthrough mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To clearly point out the main idea of the passage.
B. To attract readers attention by giving dramatic examples.
C. To introduce a dog’s similar but even more unusual experiences.
D. To make a sharp contrast between an actors struggle and a dog’s struggle.
5. What finally helped Baby Girl get the big role in the film?
A. Her adoption picture. B. Her personality and ability.
C. Her happy smile. D. Her miserable experiences.
6. What does Buhler mean by saying “She is exactly the same” in the last paragraph?
A. The dog looked exactly the same as before.
B. The dog was really excited to live such a happy life.
C. The dog returned to the piles of trash where she found it.
D. The dramatic change of the dog’s life hasn’t changed her nature.
7. Which of the following may serve as the best title of the passage?
A. The Trainer and Her Star Dog B. Shelby’s Hard-luck Story
C. From a Landfill Puppy to a Movie Star D. The Success of “A Dog’s Way Home”
C
The story of The Emperors New Clothes is one of Andersen’s best-known works. Cheaters fool
the emperor into believing they have made him a fantastic suit. Courtiers () dare not say that
the emperor is naked; it takes a child to point out the obvious. How many companies have
continued carrying out expensive projects that were favoured by the CEO, even when other
managers have had doubts? The moral is that people are often too restricted by social practice to
state their views.
In his new book Rebel Ideas: The Power of Diverse Thinking, Matthew Syed argues that the
key to dealing with this problem is “cognitive () diversity”, in other words, building a team of
people with different perspectives and intellectual backgrounds. It is not just about selecting people
