10. When I went to Spain, I thought it was important that I lived with Spanish people, so I didn’t speak English

all the time. I did know some friends who were in Madrid as well but I didn’t stay with them. I lived with two

would understand. But I often felt like a bit of a fool. Soon they realized that I could understand even though

was full of legal terms. The house owner was about 85 years old and she didn’t speak any English. She didn’t

really understand why I couldn’t understand what I was reading. Those are the challenges you have to face when

you move to a new country and there are things you have never considered before. But you have to get through

them when you are over there.

Obviously, the aim of your year abroad is to live in the country where they speak the language you’re

learning. Just talk to the locals and learn as many everyday phrases as possible. Learn what people really say,

instead of just things that you learn from textbooks and from your classes at university.
