There is no better way to immerse yourself in Saskatchewan’s diverse landscapes than by
hitting one of the beautiful hiking trails. Here are three hikes to discover.
Gem Lakes, Narrow Hills Provincial Park
The Gem Lakes are located in the Narrow Hills Provincial Park of Saskatchewan. Their
waters are fed by springs from the surrounding hills, reflecting the sun and creating gem-like
colors. There is a 5-kilometre hiking trail that loops around the tiny lakes. You can bring a tent
and spend the night in the campground. The lakes are stocked with fish and many people bring
their kayaks to spend the day floating around in the tranquility of the water trying to catch a
delicious meal.

Nut Point Trail, Lac La Ronge Provincial Park
Located on a peninsula that extends to the massive Lac La Ronge lake is the Nut Point
trail, a 30-kilometre backcountry hike along the spine of billion year old rock. The hiking trail
ends with a beautiful spot overlooking the historic Lac La Ronge Lake. Set up your tent on the
rocks in order to enjoy the sounds of the water. If you’re lucky, the Northern Lights will
explode overhead in night sky. Make sure you bring your bathing suit for a relaxing dip in the
cool waters!
Sand Dunes (沙丘) Nature Trail, Douglas Provincial Park
Have you ever wanted to walk on a rolling sand dune? There are two places for you. The
first are the famous Athabasca Sand Dunes, the world’s most northerly active sand dunes. The
second are the Great Sandhills, a 1,900-square-kilometre protected area. The hike in Douglas
Provincial Park sand dunes is a time machine of geological history. As you hike through the
fine sand and learn more about what was only here a short 11,000 years ago, you will
appreciate the geological forces that created the province as it stands today.

Don’t ever tell Angela Alvarez it’s too late for dreams to come true. The old woman just
brought home a Latin Grammy for best new artist, becoming the musical award show’s eldest
winner ever.
The Cuban American musician’s crowning moment came after decades of writing songs
but performing them only for friends and family. Until she was 90 years old, she went to the
Avalon and gave her first concert.
“I loved music very much,” Alvarez says. “When I was a child, I had two aunts that
played the piano and taught me how to sing. Whenever there was a family gathering, I was the
artist; they made dresses for me and I always liked to perform.” Music was always there for her,
as it helped her cope with the ups and downs of life: from love and motherhood, to her
relentless efforts to reunite her family and the eventual loss of her beloved husband and, years
later, of her only daughter, both to cancer.
Listening to many of these songs while growing up was especially influential on her
grandson Carlos José Alvarez, a professional composer and producer based in Los Angeles
who owes his love of music largely to his Nana, as her grandchildren called her. As Angela
was getting on in years without ever recording any of her work, he had an inspiration that made
him fly quickly to Louisiana to document each and every one of her songs, for “the legacy of
our family”.
“I hope this entire project inspires young people to sit down and talk to their elders. Ask
them questions. Ask them about the dreams they had once upon a time. They will be surprised
at what they will find,” Carlos concludes. “If we don’t ask them, they won’t tell us, and their
wisdom and dreams will leave with them.”
“There are people who give up, but I did not give up, and I always fought,” Angela said
during her wining speech. “I promise you that it’s never too late.”
