little brother, Nick is four. They're quite close and play a lot together. They quarrel quite a lot,

too, but they enjoy each other's company.

Unluckily, we live quite a long way away from the others of the family. It's an eight﹣

hour drive to get to their grandparents, but we usually visit them during the school holidays.

Jack reads well, but he didn't start to read for pleasure. He thinks reading is only

Cao Yuan was born in 1996. As he was a young kid, he liked to learn on his own. He was

not afraid of asking difficult questions. He spent two years finishing his middle and high

school classes. At the age of 14, he started taking classes at a university. Although Cao is

young，he shows maturity(成熟)beyond his age.

When he was 24, he published(发表)two papers in Nature on May 6th. Nature is one of

the top science magazines in the world. Many scientists dream of publishing their papers in it.

But it is really hard. One has to make a very important discovery.

Cao's papers are about graphene(石墨烯)—the thinnest and strongest in the world.

Scientists first discovered it in 2004.

However, Cao found that sometimes graphene can change. It can change between a

体)—a material that doesn't conduct electricity. With it, scientists can find cheaper and easier

ways to use electricity.

Now Cao is a doctoral student studying at MIT. He isn't afraid of failure in his work. "He

（2020·辽宁营口·中考真题） Xi'an celebrated the first-ever China Hanfu Day on

April 18. There were shows which were held by people wearing traditional Chinese clothing

—Hanfu. Hanfu fans from all over China gathered there to take photos and put them online

for a Hanfu photo coopetition which lasted until May 18.

China Hanfu Day is in the third month of the Chinese lunar calendar(农历), which is

said to be the birthday of the Yellow Emperor. In ancient China, this day was also called

Shangsi Festival(上巳节). Its purpose is to encourage young Chinese to take pride in

traditional clothing.

Hanfu is the traditional clothing of the Han people who lived in China before the Qing

Dynasty. It has a history of about 3,000 years. And it has changed greatly so far. However,

some of its main characteristics(特点) remain. For example, there are two parts that

overlap(交叠) on the front, which is called "jiao ling". Another main characteristic of Hanfu

is that it usually uses ribbons(系带) instead of buttons.

China is becoming a leading country in the world, so the Chinese people feel more

confident about Chinese traditional culture than ever before.

（2020·辽宁锦州·中考真题） Li Shizhen was one of the most famous doctors in

Chinese history. He was born in Hubei in 1518.

Both of Li Shizhen’s father and grandfather were doctors. Li Shizhen’s grandfather was

a country doctor who traveled in the countryside with a bag of herbs (药草) and medicine and

cured (治愈) people. His father was a doctor who wrote several books.

Li Shizhen used to help his father in his medical practice when he was young. Li

Shizhen’s father wanted him to enter politics (从政). Li Shizhen studied for the exams and

passed the country-level examination, but he was never able to pass the imperial (帝国的)

examination.

When he was 38, he cured the son of the Prince and was invited to be an official in that

court (宫廷). A few years later, he became an official at the Imperial Medical Institute.

Even though he achieved his father’s dream, he didn’t want to continue working for the

court. One year later, he left the court and returned to be a doctor again.
