In the doorway of my home, I looked closely at the face of my 23-year-old son, his backpack

by his side. We were saying good-bye. In a few hours he would be flying to France. He would be sta

ying there for at least a year to learn another language and experience life in a different country.

Before his college graduation,one day I told Daniel that the great failing in my life had been th

at I din' take a year or two off to travel when I finished college,This is the best way to my way of thi

nking, to broaden oneself and develop a lager perspective on life. Once I Had married and

begun working, I found that the of living in another culture had disappeared.

Daniel thought about this. His friends said that he would be insane to put his career on hold. Bu

t he decided it was not so crazy. After graduation, he worked as a waiter at college, a bike messenger

and a house painter. With the money he earned, he had enough to go to Paris.

Last night , I tossed in bed, unable to sleep . It was a transitional time in Daniel’s , a passage ,a

step from college into the adult world.I wanted to leave him some words that would have some

meaning,some significance beyond the moment.I failed. Nothing came to my mind. Maybe, I though

t, it wasn’t necessary to say anything.

But I knew that it was necessary . My father and I loved each other. Yet, I always regretted nev

er hearing him put his feelings into words and never having the memory of that moment.

Now, as I stood before Daniel, I still nothing came from my lips. No sound broke the stillness

of my beach-side home.Outside, I could hear the shrill cries of sea gulls as they circled the ever-

changing surf of Long Island. Inside, I stood frozen and quiet,looking into the searching eyes of my

son.

What made it more difficult was that I knew this was not the first time I had let such a

moment pass. My mind quickly raced back to a summer vacation 8 years ago, when Daniel

would tread on the forest with his three buddies for the first time. Bags packed and tools

ready, Daniel waited quietly for my final reminder. I just stared at him and quietly murmured.

“Take care, son.” Another time, Daniel was to give a graduation speech in front of 1,500

students. Before hopping the stage, he inquired, “Mom, do you have any word for me?” “No,

son, just believe in yourself.” I escaped his searching eyes and retreated into my seat.

Thinking of those lost opportunities, now I could feel my palms sweat and my throat

tighten. Finally, I mustered up my courage and blurted out, “son, I am so proud of you to

make this decision and experience a brand-new culture. I assure you this will be the most

valuable asset in your life. I take pride in you because you possess the courage which I failed

to have in pursuing your dream. Please take care and my love is always by your side.” As a

lump formed in my throat, I could no longer continue. My son was also touched beyond

words as tears brimmed over in his eyes. Finally out came his mother’s reminder and words

he had been waiting for in the last 20 years.

A long time ago, there was a happy prince and princess in a country. They took care of and loved

each other very much, and their country was happy, too. Therefore they didn't envy anything else.

One day, one of the officials found out the couple’s worry and told them, “Prince, I heard that

there is a magic charm（吉祥饰物）, and it can protect you from any unfortunate event. If you

always carry the magic charm with you, your fear and worry will disappear.” “Is it true? Where can I

find hat charm?” The prince asked him joyfully. “There is an old man in the forest, and he knows

about everything. You can ask him.”

The couple visited the old man, and asked for help with their worries and fears. The old man

nodded his head as if he knew everything and said, “Travel all around the world. Then, when you meet

a very happy couple, ask them to cut a piece of their underwear. If you keep the piece of the

underwear, your fear and worry will go away.”

The couple appreciated the old man’s kindness and set out on the journey. The couple wandered

around everywhere and heard about a happy knight (骑士) and his wife in a town. They went to visit

the knight. “Are you really happy like the rumour?” Then the knight answered. “Of course, we are,

Prince. But our only worry and problem is that we didn’t have any children.

They could not get a magic charm this time too, and kept going on their trip. It was very hard to

find the happiest couple in the world.

They had to find an absolutely happy couple, so they continued their journey. They visited a

happy couple who were famous or their happiness in the next town. And they asked the couple if they

were really happy. The couple answered. “Yes, we are very happy. But we have too many children. A

mother with a large family of children never has a peaceful day. We worry too much about our

children.”

One day, the prince couple met a shepherd（牧羊人）and his wife in a big field.___________

Feeling disappointed and tired out, the prince couple decided to go back._______
