Now people around the world celebrate（庆祝）Friendship Day. Do you know the
stories behind it?
An American woman, Joyce Hall, sold cards. In 1930, she got the idea of Friendship
Day. She thought if people had a new day to celebrate, they would buy more cards. Many
Americans gave cards and other gifts to their friends on the day. However, they stopped doing
it because they didn’t want to see it become commercialized（商业化的）. In1935, the US
Congress（国会）decided to make it the first Sunday of August. It became a day to honor
（尊重）true friends.
The story behind Friendship Day is different in Paraguay. In 1958, a group of friends in
Puerto Pinasco, Paraguay decided to celebrate friendship on July 30 every year. One man in
the group, Ramon Artemio Bracho, wanted to do more. He worked hard to start celebrations
in other countries. Thanks to（多亏了）Ramon’s work, more countries took up the idea.
Friendship Day was growing.
In 2011, the United Nations declared（联合国宣布）July 30 the International Day of
Friendship. On that day, there are activities in different countries, like fun runs and friendly
games.
But not all countries celebrate Friendship Day July 30. Argentina and Brazil celebrate it
on July 20. In India, they celebrate it on the first Sunday of August.

Life is like the four seasons. Now I am very old, but when I was young, it was the spring
of my life. After I was born( 出 生 ), I played a lot. Then I started school and I learned many
new things. Like a flower, I grew bigger every day. There were happy days and sad days:
some days the sun shone(闪耀), and some days it didn’t.
In my twenties(在我二十几岁), I had a good job. I was strong and happy. Then I got

when the trees change the color and give us delicious fruit. But the days kept getting shorter
and colder. Winter comes, I am older and weaker(虚弱的). I know I do not have many days
left, but I will enjoy them to the end.

There is a traditional (传统的) toy in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu. It looks like a clay toy (泥塑玩
具). But it can also make a sound. This toy is called taiping nijiaojiao and it has a history of
more than 1,000 years．
Taiping nijiaojiao is made of the mountain clay. The key is pressing (压) the clay with
your hands. You can change it into anything you like, from animals to plants. And you can
use anything to help you make them. For example, to make a fish tail (尾巴), you use a comb
(梳子) to press the clay.
About 20 years ago, Zhou Baokang first saw taiping nijiaojiao during a traditional
activity in Huashan village. As a lover of Chinese traditional art, he soon became interested in
it. He later learned how to make them from the traditional artists. Now the 60-year-old is an
inheritor (传承人) of taiping nijiaojiao.
Zhou loves to make taiping nijiaojiao in the shape of animals. He has a habit of making
taiping nijiaojiao for the Chinese animal sign (生肖) of each year. This year, while making
taiping nijiaojiao of tigers, he tried to show the “king of all animals”. Zhou wants more
people to know about the toy. He teaches kids at schools how to make them. He has also
opened a museum to introduce the toy. “Taiping nijiaojiao looks small, but it has rich
traditional culture (文化),” Zhou said.
