一、完形填空(共 0 分)
One December, my parents asked me what I wanted for Christmas. In fact, there was nothing I could ask for
because there was nothing more ____1____. For the first time, I realized how ____2____ I was to have born in
such a fortunate family. This made me think about all those children who did not have families, homes, or food,
rather than gifts for Christmas.
With these thoughts in mind, I told my parents in January that instead of getting an ____3____ gift, I’d love
to use the money to buy gifts for all the children that hadn’t gotten anything for Christmas. To my joy, they finally
agreed to spend $500 on gifts for those young kids.
It was such an unforgettable experience. I remember going to the homeless shelter to hand out the toys to
kids, asking them all to ____4____ with one another. I could see the surprise among them. It was clear that they
had never got a Christmas gift before, so when one of the boys asked me where I got the gifts, I told him that I
was helping Santa – Christmas Father. I explained that Santa was sorry he was so late, and this gift was made
____5____ for him! The boy took the gift slowly, smiled and ran to his mother. The last thing I heard as I moved
to the next hopeful child was the boy’s voice: “Mommy, Santa really does exist! And he doesn’t ____6____ about
us this year!”

The book that can’t wait
One problem a lot of people have with books is that they buy them and then never start reading them.
To ___7___, a foreign businessman called Eterna Cadencia came up with a very clever idea: it printed the
words of the books in disappearing ink: the text of the book disappears two months after the special book is
opened, so that buyers start reading it 7it goes away. They call this “the book that can’t wait.”
The book was ___8___. The man sold out the whole first edition() at a bookstore the day it was printed,
and received “thousands of requests” for more copies of the book. It also got a lot of news reports. As a result, the
man is planning to come out ___9___ kinds of books in disappearing ink.
In some ways, the idea is pretty clever. ___10___, we still have some suggestions:
First, the book should start the disappearing process after the reader first opens the book.
Second, after the words disappeared, the book should find a___11___use. Perhaps they can be recycled, or
we can use them as notebooks. It would be a more friendly way to do this.

A man had a cat that climbed up a tree and then was afraid to come down. He ____14____ warm milk to it,
but it would not come down.
The tree was not strong enough to climb. So the man decided to tie a rope to his ____15____ and pull it until
the tree bent(弯曲)down. He believed that he could then reach up and get the cat ____16____.
While he was checking his progress, he then thought if he went just a little bit ____17____, the tree would be
bent low enough for him to reach the cat. But as he moved the cat a little further forward, the rope broke.
The tree went “boing”(弹开)and the cat was nowhere to be found.
The man felt ____18____. He asked people he met if(是否)they ____19____ a little cat. Nobody did.
A few days later, he met his neighbor at a store. He happened to look into her shopping basket and was
____20____ to see cat food.
This woman was a cat ____21____ and everyone knew it, so he asked her, “Why are you buying cat food? I
know you don’t like cats.” The woman then told him how her little girl begged(恳求)her for a cat, but she kept
refusing. Then a few days ago, the child begged again, so the woman finally ____22____ her little girl, “Well, I’ll
let you keep a cat if it falls from the sky.”
She told the man, “I watched my child go out in the yard, and look straight into the _____23_____. And a cat

from different countries.
I wrote to a Swede, an Italian, an American, a Finn, an Arab and an Egyptian, telling them about my family, my
school and my country. ___25___ one girl replied—the Egyptian. Her name was Noran Hussein. When I opened
my e-mail box and saw the reply, I was ___26___.
We started off by telling each other about our lives. Right from the start I could tell that we ___27___ the same
interests. Step by step we discussed problems all over the world.
People often ask if I’m afraid to ask Noran about certain things, like wearing the veil (面纱). I’m not. To me,
asking questions is the first step towards understanding. ___28___ we stand back and only wonder, we’ll start to
run into problems.
Noran and I are different, but we never say that ___29___ is wrong. I have learned more than I could ever hope

different, not to be afraid of one another.
