Compass
It was a great gift to the world from ancient China. Before it was invented, sailors had to
depend on the stars to find direction. After it was invented, the oceans were open to travel. And
many new discoveries were made with the help of it.
Gunpowder
It was one of the greatest inventions. It is said that in the 3rd century a Chinese man wrote
about how to make it. At first, it was used for making fireworks. At the end of the Tang Dynasty,
people began to use it in wars. The method of making it was brought to the Arab world and
Europe in the 13th and 14th centuries.
Paper-
making
China was the first country in the world to make paper. During the Western Han Dynasty
(202 BC.—9 AD), paper was made in some places in China. It was developed in the
Eastern Han Dynasty (25 AD.—220 AD) by Cai Lun. He made paper with bark, ropes,
rags and so on. Before it was invented, the ancient Chinese carved characters on animal bones
and stones. They also wrote them on bamboo and wooden sticks.
Printing
It was developed in 1041—1048 in the Song Dynasty. A man named Bi Sheng carved
characters on pieces of clay and wood. Then he put ink on them. After the characters were printed
on paper, the pieces of clay or wood could be used again. This technology then spread to Korea,
Japan and Europe. It was the basic method at that time.

When you want to ask your teacher a question during class, what do you do? Do you simply shout out your
question as soon as it enters your mind? Or do you raise your hand and wait until the teacher calls your name?
If you politely raise your hand first, it’s probably because your teacher has a rule that regulates(规定) what
you are allowed to do when you have a question. Can you imagine what it would be like if everyone could simply
talk whenever they wanted during class? Do you think learning would take place? Instead of a peaceful learning
environment, a classroom without rules would be chaotic(混乱的)!
When you learn to drive, you’ll realize how many rules you have to follow. You can’t go as fast as you want
at any time in any place. You can’t park your car anywhere you want to. You’re not even allowed to drive a car if
you are under 18 years old!
The rules for driving share a common purpose(目的) with many rules you must follow in your daily life to
keep you safe. As an ancient Chinese saying goes, “No rules, no standards.” If you make a list of the rules you
follow each day, you will quickly realize how many of them can keep you safe and make your life more enjoyable
as a result.
Although sometimes you feel like a rule is unjust(不公平的), don’t break it. Instead, decide what you can do
to try to change the rule. Working within the rules to change the rules is what you need to do.

A.不以规矩,不能成方圆。 B.吃一堑,长一智。
C.不入虎穴,焉得虎子。 D.言无二贵,法无两适。
9What can we learn from the passage?
AThe writer gives an example to explain why rules are important.
BFollowing rules can give you a safe and happy life in a way.
CWe needn’t pay attention to unjust rules.
DThe purpose of rules is to regulate your behavior.
