My First Marathon (马拉松)
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running
for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. However, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first PE class, the teacher required us to run
laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I
realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic.
It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up
sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces( 鞋 带 ) became untied. So I stopped to
readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I
stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never
minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 am or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the
same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels ( 世俗标签). I can
now call myself a “marathon winner”.

D. To share a precious memory.
26. How was the authors first marathon?

D. He walked to the end.
27. What does the story mainly tell us?

B. A winner is one with a great effort of will.

C
Your house may have an effect on your figure( ). Experts say the way you design your
home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your
environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part
of your diet plan.
Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage
overeating, for people are often less self-conscious (难为) when they’re in poorly lit places—and
so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps
and flood the place with brightness.
Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who
ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors
like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us less hungry. So when it’s
time to repaint, go blue.
Don’t forget the clock—or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer
calories (卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the
time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat.
If you need some help slowing down, turning on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush
through a meal.
Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22
percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon
over a smaller one, total intake ( ) increases by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent
more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.
28. The text is especially helpful for those who care about .
A. their home comforts B. their body shape
C. house buying D. healthy diets
29. A home environment in blue can help people .
A. digest food better B. reduce food intake
C. burn more calories D. regain their appetites
30. What are people advised to do at mealtimes?
A. Eat quickly. B. Play fast music.
C. Use smaller spoons. D. Turn down the lights.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Is Your House Making You Fat?
B. Ways of Serving Dinner
C. Effects of Self-Consciousness
D. Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?
D
As data and identity theft becomes more and more common, the market is growing for
biometric (测量) technologies—like fingerprint scans—to keep others out of private e-spaces.
At present, these technologies are still expensive, though.
Researchers from Georgia Tech say that they have come up with a low-cost device ( ) that
gets around this problem: a smart keyboard. This smart keyboard precisely measures the cadence
(节奏) with which one types and the pressure fingers apply to each key. The keyboard could offer a
strong layer of security by analyzing things like the force of a users typing and the time between
key presses. These patterns are unique to each person. Thus, the keyboard can determine people’s
identities, and by extension, whether they should be given access to the computer it’s connected to
—regardless of whether someone gets the password right.
It also doesn’t require a new type of technology that people aren’t already familiar with.
Everybody uses a keyboard and everybody types differently.
In a study describing the technology, the researchers had 100 volunteers type the word “touch”
four times using the smart keyboard. Data collected from the device could be used to recognize
different participants based on how they typed, with very low error rates. The researchers say that
the keyboard should be pretty straightforward to commercialize and is mostly made of inexpensive,
plastic-like parts. The team hopes to make it to market in the near future.
32. Why do the researchers develop the smart keyboard?
A. To reduce pressure on keys.
B. To improve accuracy in typing.
C. To replace the password system.
D. To cut the cost of e-space protection.
33. What makes the invention of the smart keyboard possible?
A. Computers are much easier to operate.
B. Fingerprint scanning techniques develop fast.
C. Typing patterns vary from person to person.
D. Data security measures are guaranteed.
34. What do the researchers expect of the smart keyboard?
A. It’ll be environment-friendly.
B. It’ll reach consumers(消费者) soon.
C. It’ll be made of plastics.
D. It’ll help speed up typing.
