Buying second-hand things is becoming more popular these days. It’s reported that one million people
are selling over 2 million second-hand things on Xianyu every day, a popular website like eBay. People
have made more money now and bought more things than they really need. As more people turn to a
simple lifestyle, they are selling their used things cheaply. Shoppers are interested in the low prices. At the
same time, buying second-hand things is good for the environment.
When Chen Junjun, a college student in Shanghai, wants to buy books, she uses Déjà vu —an online
second-hand bookshop. She says the books here are much cheaper. They are as much as 70 percent cheaper
than new books. “Since I don’t have enough spending money, it’s a perfect choice for me,” Chen said.
Lots of people like Chen are buying second-hand books online. Déjà vu has over 3 million users and
sells about 20,000 second-hand books every day. In order to let readers see the real books, it has also
opened two brick-and-mortar bookstores —one in Beijing, the other in Shanghai.
Besides lower prices, people can also find out-of-print books. Yan Minjun, a 21-year-old reader, has
bought many classic books on Déjà vu, such as a copy of Pride and Prejudice that was published (出版) by
People’s Literature Publishing House in 1993. “I looked for it for a long time. Now I have it!” she said.
Buying old books can even build a bridge for readers. Zhao Kaiqi, a 22-year-old college student in
Harbin, once found a note in a second-hand book she bought. “Its previous( 以 前 的 ) owner shared her
thoughts and hoped I would enjoy it. It was so heartwarming,” Zhao said. “I want to do the same thing in
the future, too.”
