Join a Program This Summer?
Summer vacation is coming. Many universities provide summer programs for students to
choose from. Here are some examples taken from the Internet.
University of Mississippi Summer Pre-College Program
The University of Mississippi is a community of learning devoted to improving excellence in
intellectual development and personal character. Financial aid is available for students with
academic talent as well as financial need. Schedules vary depending on program themes and
types, but all days end with community time activities. For Summer College participants,
weekend trips include visits to Memphis, Birmingham, and Atlanta.
Johns Hopkins University Summer Program
Johns Hopkins University Summer Program offers a comprehensive range of courses for
college and pre-college students. Each course meets from 9 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday,

Most students say in the pre-college dormitory, and participate in structured activities outside
class time, including weekends. Students generally do not have a lot of unstructured free time in
the two-week session.
St. John’s College Summer Academy
St. John’s College Summer Academy is a residential, pre-college program that engages
students in discussion-based classes taught by college faculty. Organized in week-long sessions,
each session is designed around a specific theme that explores important questions and ideas. A
typical day includes classes, meals, extra-curricular activities such as croquet lessons, a reading
group, or a yoga class, and possibly an outing. Weekend trips have included a visit to the
National Gallery in Washington, D.C., and a performance at the Santa Fe Opera.
LIM College’s Summer Fashion Lab
LIM College’s Summer Fashion Lab is a comprehensive pre-college program that offers high
school and college students the opportunity to study fashion at the college level, experience New
York City, and test drive a college entirely devoted to the business of fashion. A typical day in
Summer Fashion Lab involves students meeting for class in the morning, field trips to fashion
museums and interactive in-class presentations!

Hunter McGrady’s All Worthy range was launched in April when the coronavirus pandemic
most affected the world. Despite the social restrictions that remain in place in many nations,
some of the pieces in her website sold out in a week and one in particular --- a black jumpsuit
sold out in minutes.
She has come a long way since she struggled against a series of rejections from modeling
agencies and agents who told her she would never make it in the fashion world. “I was really
upset and thought that I wouldn’t be good enough unless I lost the weight they asked. Now, I let
it roll off my back.”
McGrady was born in southern California on the west coast and her mother was a former
model. Although McGrady had strong passion for the fashion industry in the early days, she felt
her looks had been frequently judged unsuitable by short-sighted critics. “For both females and
males, larger, fatter people are mostly ignored in the glossy fashion world. The ultra-thin models
are considered the most attractive, even though the vast majority of ordinary women are on the
curvier side.
The All Worthy fashion line includes a range of sizes from XXS to 5X. McGrady and other
large women model the range for the line’s website. She was inspired to create the fashion range
by the lack of attractive and well-made clothes that fit her. “The mission of All Worthy is to
create a line that caters to women of all different shapes and sizes,” she says. “I hope all types of
beauty can be shown to the public.”
24. What made McGrady upset?
A. The need for losing weight. B. The unbearable pain in her back.
C. The objection from her family. D. The prejudice against large body shape.
25. What does McGrady think of the judgment of short-sighted critics?
A. It is too harsh for most women. B. It makes curvy women unwelcome.
C. It focuses on the popularity of models. D. It overlooks the importance of fitness.
26. What is the goal of All Worthy?
A. To design clothes for ultra-thin models.
B. To change critics’ opinion about beauty.
C. To show the charm of different female figures.
D. To inspire large women to join the fashion world.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. Confidence Is the Best Fashion B. Every Kind of Beauty Should Be Seen
C. Special Clothes Made for Models D. A New Trend in the Fashion World

Sharks may be able to smell blood from miles away, but they probably don’t know how red it
is. It is likely that they only see the world in black and white according to a study
that is the first to investigate sharks’ visual system.
A team at the University of Western Australia studied the visual systems of many different
species of sharks and what they have found is diversity in eye design that mirrors the ecological
and behavioral diversity of the shark species. The team looked at the retinal cells of 17 species of
sharks caught off Queensland and Western Australia and found out that the cells are responsible

for sharks’ color blindness.
According to the study, these animals are color-blind due to the light receptors they have got
in their eyes. There are two main types of light-sensitive cells to allow animals to see: rod cells
help measure brightness because they are highly sensitive to light and allow night vision but
cannot tell colors apart, while various types of cone cells help distinguish colors. They peeked at
the structure of sharks’ rod and cone cells in the retina. Human eyes come with red, green and
blue cone variations, while sharks appear to have just one kind of cone cells.
The study suggests that contrast against the background, rather than color itself, might be
more important for object detection by sharks. Costumes that camouflage swimmers’ bodies in
sea water are less likely to draw a shark’s attention than ones with bright, solid colors that
emphasize their outline. “It’s the high contrast against the water rather than the color itself which
is probably attractive to sharks,” said Professor Nathan Hart who led the study.
28. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The importance of the research.
B. The features of sharks’ retinal cells.
C. The process and the result of the study.
D. The functions of sharks’ visual systems.
29. What causes sharks’ blindness to color according to the study?
A. Their fragile rod cells. B. Their lack of various cone cells.
C. Their dark living environment. D. Their weak sensitivity to light.
30. What does the underlined word “camouflage” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. hide B. fit C. beautify D. protect
31. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To clear up a wrong belief. B. To raise funds for a program.
C. To show a unique phenomenon. D. To present a scientific discovery.
D
Japan recently lowered its voting age from 20 to 18. This decision was in part to help young
people feel more engaged in politics. But it may also signal the change of social views regarding
the beginning of adulthood.
Adulthood has traditionally been defined by a combination of age and the achievement of
social milestones. Most countries have a legally defined age to determine when a person becomes
an adult---the age of majority. In Australia, most states consider a person to be an adult in court at
18. The age of 18 is also consistent with other adult privileges, such as the right to purchase
alcohol and to marry. However, 17-year-olds can serve in the army and get a driver’s license. The
law defines adulthood on the basis of age and it also recognizes the process of becoming an adult
as involving gradually in social responsibility. This legal approach to adulthood is mirrored in
other countries, where there are differences between the age of majority and social
responsibilities given to young people.
Socially, determinants of adulthood traditionally focus on a person taking increasing
responsibility for their lives in various ways. Completing school, taking full-time employment,
getting married and parenthood---these are all observable indicators to determine when a person
is viewed as an adult.
Since the 1980s, however, people have achieved some of these observable milestones at later
ages. Increased access to education has delayed young people leaving home and develop
romantic relationships. Economic changes have also resulted in unstable employment markets
and increases in costs of living, prompting many young people to remain at home and depended
on parents.
Due to these social changes, our expectations of young people and their level of social
responsibility have also changed. The recognition of a new life stage---emerging adulthood---has
been recommended to account for the changes to social milestones that have traditionally
represented adulthood.
32. What can we learn about adulthood from the text?
A. People reach observable indicators much later.
B. Age alone is a reliable determinant of adulthood.
C. Participation in politics is a responsibility for adulthood.
D. Economic changes mainly shift people’s views on adulthood.
33. What right can people enjoy at the age of 17 in most states of Australia?
A. Voting B. Driving legally C. Getting married D. Buying wines
34. Which of the following may account for young people remaining at home with their parents?
A. Decreased costs of living B. Rising employment rate
C. Parents’ high expectations D. More chances to receive education
35. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Emerging adulthood reflects a new life stage.
B. Adulthood is defined differently in different places.
C. Social changes are challenging the idea of adulthood.
D. Adulthood is a combination of rights and responsibilities.

How to Know Yourself Better
Most of us believe that we know ourselves better than anyone else in this world. But a lot of
people are still strangers to themselves. Why? 36 For a person to have a well-lived life, it is
important that he knows himself well. If you are one of those who are striving to know yourself
better, these steps will guide you.
Take a moment to write down things that you know “very good” about yourself---your
interests, likes, dislikes, preferences, hobbies, strengths, weaknesses, hopes, fears, dreams, ect.
37 By creating a list of your personal attributes that you are familiar with, you are keeping
yourself in touch with yourself.
Take personality and psychological tests. This is another way to know yourself better. The
Internet has a rich sources of free online personality and psychological assessments and tests.
38
Know yourself better by understanding people’s perceptions about you. 39 Sometimes,
you think you know yourself enough, but other people who see you from their point of view can
offer you some insights how you act and get understood by others. Be careful, however, to
balance both perceptions to come up with an objective view of yourself.
40 It’s a lifetime process. Every day you will be given new insights about yourself.
