Last year, at the age of 90, William Shatner had a life-changing experience. He went to
space, after decades of playing a science-fiction character who was exploring the universe.
William became the oldest living person to travel into space.
William was born in Montreal in 1931. He has been acting for almost his entire life,
starting when he was 6 years old. “I’ve never driven a taxi. I’ve never waited tables. I’ve
never taken an unemployment insurance check. I was always just trying to find something
new to do.” William said. So, when presented with the chance to orbit Earth in a rocket, the
91-year-old jumped at it.
On October 13, William and three others boarded Jeff Bezos’ space capsule, called Blue
Origin. At 9:51 a.m. central time, the rocket fired up its engines. With all the attending noise
and fire, William lifted off. He could see Earth disappearing. Gravity pulled at them. William
tried to raise his arm, and could barely do so. And after a while, suddenly, relief. They were
floating.
They got out of their harnesses and began to float around. The other folks went straight
into somersaults () enjoying all the effects of weightlessness. William got to the window
as quickly as possible to see what was out there.
He thought he would experience a deep call for endless exploration, but he was
absolutely wrong. “When I looked into space, I saw a cold, dark, black emptiness. It was
unlike any blackness you can see or feel on Earth.” William said. “This was an immensely
powerful awakening for me. I realized that Earth is, and will remain, our only home. I am
aware not only of our insignificance, but the grandeur ( 宏 伟 ) around us that makes us

insignificant. That allows us perhaps a chance to rededicate ourselves to our planet, to each
other, to life and love all around us, if we seize that chance.”
That’s when William determined that he would do everything he could to protect our one
and only home.

With the rapid development of the catering industry (餐饮业), Li Xianghui knows it will
be challenging for traditional restaurants to handle the increasing number of diners. But for his
restaurants, things are different.
Owning four restaurants, Li “employs” a group of cooking machines, which can operate
tirelessly day and night. The cooking machine can make about 2,000 recipes. Once seated,
diners scan a QR code and use an app to make their meal selection and pay. Packed in kits, all
dishes are semi-finished and can be served within minutes after they are put into the machines.
“Automation is the future for the catering industry. It can avoid pressure from labor costs
in running a traditional restaurant and increase efficiency,” Li says. The robot “chef” has
attracted an increasing number of diners since the restaurant’s opening. “The taste is good and
the price is not expensive,” a regular customer says.
With such restaurants springing up across the country, robot “chefs” are not only taking
over restaurants but also coming into homes. Behind the scenes is the country’s growing
service robotics industry, which, as of 2021, had a market value of more than 58 billion yuan
($8.3 billion), according to the Statista database portal. The industry is projected to reach a
value of 291 billion yuan by 2027.
The “smart” restaurant for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games may have indicated
what the future of the food service industry looks like. With no human chefs and waiters,
robots took charge of everything. Across the world, robot “chefs” are set to take over cooking
in restaurants and technology advances are taking them a step further.
Working in cooperation with domestic appliances manufacturer ( 制造商), researchers
from the University of Cambridge have trained their robot “chef” to assess the saltiness of a
dish at different stages of the chewing process, imitating a similar process in humans. Their
results could be useful in the development of automated or semi-automated food preparation
by helping robots to learn what tastes good and what doesn’t, making them better “cooks”.
7. In what way are Li Xianghui’s restaurants special?
A. They are chain stores. B. The boss acts as a main chef.
C. Cooking robots take over the kitchen. D. They offer the largest variety of dishes.
8. Which word best describes the cooking machines?
A. Costly. B. Tasty. C. Inefficient. D. Competitive.
9. Why does the author mention smart restaurants for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics in
Paragraph 5?
A. To indicate their promising future.
B. To explain why the event is successful.
C. To show the high-tech used in the event.
D. To describe how they work for the Olympics.
10. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us about robot chefs?
A. Their scientific developers. B. Their further improvement.
C. Their wide popularity. D. Their major functions.

I like to break writing down into three steps. The first step is having an idea. People often
ask me how to get ideas. 11 Just think of yourself as a reader rather than a writer, and
then write the story you would most love to read yourself.
That’s how I had the idea of writing Phoenix. I’ve always loved space stories. The stars
have always filled me with a sense of wonder. 12 So I had to sit down and write my own.
The second step is writing a draft, in which you tell yourself the story you want to read.
Do a bit of it every day until you reach the end. But remember that no one can write a great
book in just one draft. I’ve never met a single writer who could do that. 13 You need to
build it over a number of drafts.
14 Once you’ve written a draft, try to read it as if someone else had written it. Stop
being the writer, and become the reader again. And then ask yourself the same questions.
What works? What doesn’t? Then go back to being the writer, and do everything you can to
make it more like the story you want to read. Keep doing this until it’s the best version you
can possibly write.
The process of writing Phoenix took me 13 drafts. It was long and hard, but it was
rewarding, because it was the book I wanted to read. And you will feel the same about the
stories that you write. So I’d like to wish you all happy writing, and happy reading. 15
