Just then Terry asked me if we could gather all the girls and work with them together.
I reluctantly agreed. She could tell I wasn’t thrilled about the idea but at least it broke the ice
between us. During the next few weeks, Terry always made sure they included me when
discussing with the coach and asked for my ideas to improve our team. Practice once again
became their daily routine and eventually, I got over myself and we grew to be very close friends.
At the end of the year, the Annual Sports Award Ceremony was held to honor the valuable
players and cheerleaders. With enthusiasm I cheered as Coach Maguire handed Terry her captain's
cup. Just as Terry walked off the stage, Maguire cleared her throat and announced that the
cheerleading “Spirit Award”would go to the girl showing the most dedicated effort. Hearing my
name announced, I was as shocked as Terry when she was voted captain. As I headed toward the
stage, Terry was coming down the aisle toward me. We hugged each other tightly and Terry
whispered in a tone with tears,“Nobody deserves this more than you.”
