Sarek National Park gives visitors an opportunity to set foot on natural land and learn more about Swe
den. The area bears the stamp of the inland ice sheet, and a hike through Sarek is a trip through Sweden’s g
eological history. The National Park is home to 100 glaciers, and 6 of Sweden’s 13 highest peaks. It is 2000
square kilometers of untouched wilderness including breath-taking peaks, valleys and fast-running mountai
n rivers.
The Sami People
Sarek National Park is a high area where the Sami people have lived since ancient time. The valleys an
d the mountain slopes are perfect areas for three Sami groups engaged in reindeer farming: the Sirges, Jåhk
ågaska Tjiellde and Tuorpon.
Hiking possibilities
You must be an experienced hiker and be adventurous to take Sarek to wander on your own. Rememb
er that there are no marked trails or facilities of any kind, so always bring a compass, map, toilet paper and l
ots of adventure. Here you do not worry about the risk of bumping into anyone else. Perhaps
encounter into a wild animal. But probably you will meet none!
You will find Kungsleden in the eastern part of the park. You can also hike from Kvikkjokk in the sout
h along the Tarra Valley, or from Saltoluokta, which is a mountain station with a highly recommended resta
urant. From Ritsem, which lies north of Akkajaure, you can take the boat to the north of Sarek.
Getting here & guided Tours
Sarek is one of Sweden’s most inaccessible national parks for anyone who cannot hike or ski in on thei
r own. There are no roads leading up to the national park. It is absolutely recommendable to click here to b
ook a guided tour by one of the local tour operators.

Harry Peksa, an eight-year-old Berkshire boy from Winnersh, has set himself a challenge of picking u
p one metric tonne(公吨) of litter, trying to save the planet in his way.
According to Harry’s father, Nicolas Peksa, the challenge was entirely inspired by a lesson about COP
26 at school. After watching a YouTube video of an American person setting himself a similar challenge, th
e young schoolboy went up to his father and asked, “Daddy do you think we can collect a metric tonne of r
ubbish and sort it out please?”
From the things Harry has found, actually, he is trying to do more than recycle. His father explained,
“We found a scarf, for example, so we washed it and he’s happy to wear it. We found some wine glasses ye
sterday so he’d like to wash them up and start drinking from them as well.”
They do have limitations, however. “We don’t touch bottles that have yellow liquid in them when the
y’re potentially easily-addicted coke. He knows he needs high-quality gloves, litter picker and high-visibilit
y jackets.”
One issue that also hinders Harry is a lack of daylight and time to pick up the amount of litter he wants
to. “Right now the problem is daylight hours. He starts school at 8 am and doesn’t get out until 4.30 pm bec
ause of school arrangements”, said Nicolas.
In spite of various obstacles, Harry has been excited about going out to do his bit for the environment
and was particularly thrilled when he spotted an entire car seat and a pair of Hugo Boss trousers. He has eve
n started a blog to document his enormous challenge and weird items he has found. So far Harry has collect
ed 17 kg of rubbish and his father has mentioned that it could, realistically, take him nine months to collect
one tonne of litter.
With great eagerness to accomplish his goal earlier, Harry has turned to his leader at his Beaver Scouts
group, requesting “can my Beaver friends please help?”. Thus, the social club is currently sparing no efforts
to arrange a parent-child litter pick over the weekend of December 4 and 5.
