As a child growing up in a suburban town in the Northeast of the United States, the arrival of
spring had little meaning for me.
Sure, we had a weeklong spring vocation from school, but the key word there was vacation, not
spring.
For the kids in my neighborhood, the arrival of spring was a non-event. There were two
important seasons: winter, when we could go skating and sledding or build snow forts, and summer,
when we could finally make proper use of the beach about 100 meter east of my family home.
Spring and autumn were just technical details, weeks and weeks of waiting for the good times'
return.
Admittedly, spring later developed its own attractions for me—"In the spring a young man's
fancy turns to thoughts of love", as the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson noted—however, it was not
spring itself, but the other stuff that got my attention.
In short, I never thought much at all about spring…. and then I arrived in China. I had been in
Beijing for about three months when my first Spring Festival rolled around, and it could hardly be
ignored. Aside from the random bursts of fireworks at any time day or night, what stood out most
for me was that the capital seemed to be empty.
It was as though the crowds and streams of cars and trucks commonly seen in the capital had all
gone into hiding. My puzzlement cleared up when I returned to work. My colleagues explained that
Chinese traditionally travel, if necessary, to visit their families during Spring Festival, and that
many Beijingers were not natives of the capital.
I also got my first knowledge of something about Spring Festival that never ceases to amaze
me. Regardless of when the holiday is set to begin, there is an almost immediate and sudden change
for the better in the weather. Spring really does arrive.
I can't begin to figure out how the ancient Chinese could create a system for the millennia that
would almost always accurately predict when the season would shift year after year after year. But

Whether it is “arguing until blue in the face” or “feeling green with envy”, the English language
is full of idioms linking color to emotion. Now for the first time, scientists have shown that people
actually do change colors depending on their feelings. Although it is a small change to skin tone
around the nose, eyebrows, cheeks or chin. The effects are picked up subconsciously (潜意识地) by
observers, making it very hard to hide emotions.
The scientists believe the changes of color are caused by blood flow channeled from the central
nervous system depending on our state of mind. “We identified patterns of facial coloring that are
unique to every emotion we studied,” said Doctor Alex Martinez, a cognitive scientist and professor
at Ohio State University. “We believe these color patterns are due to small changes in blood flow or
blood composition brought about by the central nervous system. We use them to correctly identify
how other people are feeling whether we do it consciously (有意识地) or not.”
For the study, the researchers first took hundreds of pictures of facial expressions and separated
the images into different color channels that correspond to how human eyes see coloreither in a
red/green channel or blue/yellow. They then ran the images through computer analysis and found that
emotions, such as “happy”, “sad”, anger” or “dislike”, all formed unique color patterns. “Dislike”,
for example, creates a blue-yellow cast around the lips, but with a red-green cast around the nose and
forehead. Happiness is seen in red at the cheeks and a little blue around the chin, but the same face
with a slightly redder forehead and slightly less blue chin registers as “surprised.”
To test whether colors alone could convey emotions—without smiles, frowns(皱眉)to go along
with themthe researchers then put together the different emotional color patterns on pictures of
faces with neutral expressions. They found that volunteers were able to spot an emotion up to 75
percent of the time. The effect remained regardless of gender, races or overall skin tone.
8. The phrase “arguing until blue in the face” is used in Paragraph 1 to _________.
