The Internet can provide a wealth of educational resources for small children, if you know where to look.
Enchanted Learning
Enchanted learning is a great website for children, and I know several teachers who rely on it for materials for
their classrooms. Most of the information is free, but for $ 20.00 per year, you can purchase a membership that
allows you to have access to the site without the advertising. The pages here are great. There are colored pages and
worksheets for toddlers (学步儿童) and school-age children.
Starfall
Starfall is another good educational website for small children. Teachers often use this website in classrooms.
It emphasizes reading skills for early learners. The website is aimed at first-grade-level learners, but it has tools that
can help all children from pre-K to second grade. The website has reading activities, worksheets to download, and a
store where you can purchase educational materials for your children.
Sesame Street Workshop
Kids love Sesame Street, and it is always educational. This is one of the funniest websites online for children
because it is very well animated and has great sound effects. The website has games and stories for small kids, and
they can create letters at the post office and mail them to their favorite characters.

Michael Shirazi is a 67-year-old American who has been feeding more than 150 homeless cats in Shanghai for
the past eight years. Every night, he leaves his home at 11:00 pm and takes 20 kilos of cat food to the street feeding
the homeless cats. So he is called by people "the king of homeless cats".
Eight years ago, Michael came to Shanghai for his family's business. At that time, he was a successful
businessman. Until one day after living in Shanghai for a year, a homeless cat he named "short tail" came into his
life. He still remembers the night when he saw "short tail" and the way it searched for food in the garbage can for
her and her newborn babies. He had pity on "short tail" and brought it food and water. Since then, he has been
feeding more and more homeless cats. He even shut down his company and closed his family business because of
it.
These homeless cats have brought many happy moments to Michael. Every time they see him, they jump with
excitement and kiss him. But unfortunately, his wife left him because he no longer managed his family business
and spent nearly 10, 000 yuan a month on cat food. Though all the things happened to Michael, he still leaves his
home on time every night.
Michael said: "My experience makes me feel that people are made of love. We must return our love to the
world so that we can find our inner(内心的) peace." This is the happiness he gets every night when he's on his way
to feeding food: feeling loved and needed.

Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you
probably sing or whistle when you are happy.
Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However they sing
most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their
territory.
Do you know what a territory is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims as its own.
Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Your yard and house
are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and
threaten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.
If so, you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight with him. A bird does the same thing.
But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at the nesting (筑巢) season. So he is screaming all the time,
whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep
an outsider away.
Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory
of theirs.
You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up
territories.
8. What does the underlined word “its” in Para.3 refer to?
A. The area. B. The other bird.
C. The animal. D. The family.
9. How can we describe a bird at the nesting season?
A. He often fights with outsiders.
B. He always watches out for outsiders.
C. He tries to make friends with outsiders.
D. He often expects outsiders to help him.
10. In what way does the writer explain birds’ singing?
A. By comparing birds with human beings.
B. By reporting experiment results.
C. By describing birds’ daily life.
D. By telling birds’ stories.
11. What is most of birds’ language used to do?
